General :: Xscreensaver Intermittently Works - Not Recording Anything In The Logs

Jan 31, 2010

I have xscreensaver installed and configured. I have it set to turn on after 5 minutes, cycle every 5 minutes. I have acpi setup to blank my monitor after 10 minutes and power off after 15 minutes. The problem is, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't figured it out. The service from what I can tell only runs when the screen saver is active. So checking ps -e doesn't tell me much, and since there isn't a true problem it is not recording anything in the logs.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04.2 Server - Intermittently Hangs With No Indication Of Cause In Logs?

Sep 1, 2011

The attached log file includes two crashes/reboots within the past day or so I have recently started trying to set up / manage a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS) server in our data center (all other servers are Windows boxes). The server periodically hangs and becomes unresponsive and I'm at a loss to find anything in any log that indicates a specific cause. Sometimes it's up for hours, sometimes days (14 days at longest). Plugging a monitor in to the machine after a hang shows nothing at all. In an effort to troubleshoot the problem we've tried disabling APIC, more out of "educated desperation" than anything else. Unfortunately we are limited in some of the troubleshooting we can do, as we have a single client website hosted on the box (the reason we set it up) so anything that involves significant downtime is a problem.

As this is our first attempt at setting up a linux box, we are using a "well equipped" desktop grade machine but not what I would call "server grade" hardware. This is a standalone box, not a VPS. We are using a hardware, not software, RAID array and have plenty of memory in the box.

Caveats / Background:

I am relatively new to Linux in general. I spend much more time writing code than managing servers. I'm comfortable with working on the box, but I'm not really a sysadmin guy. I'm comfortable with the command line but have more experience with OS X (BSD). I am unsure of all of the tools / information / Logs that may be available, though I try to be thorough in checking what I do know. I did not physically configure the hardware so I'm not sure of all of the specs but I can get any info I need to troubleshoot. I may be skipping very basic steps or missing obvious places to look for information without knowing it.

A little more detail:

Real memory: 8GB
Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
Hardware RAID 10
Managing sites with Webmin version 1.550

Server is in a remote data center. Hands on-troubleshooting is difficult. We have attempted two Linux setups at this point. The first was on a hardware config identical to this one, but with no actual pieces of hardware reused. That attempt was using CentOS and we were attempting to set up CPanel. We scrapped that install because of this same problem (periodic crashing / hanging). The second attempt (this one) is showing the same behavior. The only thing I can really see in common are the hardware configuration (though CentOS & Ubuntu may have more in common than I think).

The box will run fine for hours, days, or even weeks, and then just stop responding entirely. I check all of the logs I know to check (primarily messages, syslog and kern.log) but I don't see anything that seems like an error to me. I do see lines that I don't understand that may or may not be problems, such as:

Code:

rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="814" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.

Most of our syslog entries seem to be logs of webmin related cron jobs running. My gut tells me that there is possibly some component in our configuration Linux does not like or needs a driver update (maybe the raid card for example), but I'm unsure of how to do more to track down or determine what that might be. Guess and check is expensive. Another thought I've had is that one or more of the cron jobs that are running are tripping something up, but it doesn't appear to be reproducible on demand and, again, I'm at a loss on how to test that theory any further. The same cron job does not appear to be running each time the server goes down. This is a portion the log just prior to our last hang:

Code:

Aug 8 11:00:01 linhost01 CRON[10771]: (www-data) CMD ([ -x /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -a -f /etc/awstats/awstats.conf -a -r /var/log/apache2/access.log ] && /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -config=awstats -update >/dev/null)

Debian Multimedia :: No Microphone Recording But Input Does Works In Some Way

Aug 12, 2011

For some time, my microphone input doesn't reach the recording application, but instead goes directly to the loudspeaker. If I make a sound in the microphone, it will go to the loudspeakers, and Audacity or Skype will not "hear" anything (and of course, with this set-up, there's a constant noise in the loudspeaker, coming from the microphone). This problem goes away if I install PulseAudio. So obviously, there's nothing broken with either of ALSA or hardware, only some misconfiguration somewhere, and PulseAudio can make a sense of the mess. Playing with all sorts of configurations in Alsamixer didn't help.

Unfortunately, I don't want PulseAudio, because it causes output problems which are a bit too subtle for me to describe coherently here. So I'd rather fix ALSA than Pulse. Please direct me into how to investigate this. The OS is Debian Unstable, the audio card is an integrated Intel ALC1200.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mencoder Cam Recording Script No Longer Works?

Mar 20, 2011

I have been using mencoder to record audio and video from my Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. I've been using the following wrapper script under 10.04:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
outFile=$(date +%Y-%m-%d)
mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=800:height=600:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/audio1 -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts

[Code]....

The video and audio work in other applications, but for some reason mencoder isn't using them. I don't like Cheese because it seems like I can't get equally high framerates at good resolution, and besides I want to be able to run this from the command line.

Ubuntu :: "Swap Left Alt And Left Win" Keyboard Layout Works Intermittently?

No matter what layout options I choose, I can't seem to get it working.I also have the same setup on my laptop and work desktop and it works without issue. I've ensured my .Xmodmap doesn't exist. When I say "works intermittently" I mean when I'm trying to use "alt+b, alt+f" navigation in emacs or bash, it doesn't work but if I click around a bit then try again, it works. Also, I use alt+arrows to switch workspaces and that always works

General :: Use The Xscreensaver Gltext To Monitor System Information?

May 26, 2010

I am trying to get the X screensaver gltext to monitor my system temp and maybe some other stats. Writing a script that puts together the stats periodically is no problem, but the main thing I'm running into is that gltext doesn't refresh - whatever text I feed it stays there. So, for example, I run this command:$ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gltext -text "`cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature`"and get a gltext window showing:temperature:60 CI can manipulate it and format it as necessary, but as my CPU heats up and cools down, it doesn't update, even if I include time variables that do.I have a script that feeds gltext the time as the first line and the temp as the second line - and although the time updates continuously as the time changes, the temperature value remains the same as whenever the screensaver started.

General :: RAID5 Array Intermittently Rebuilding?

Jul 17, 2009

I have a 9x320G RAID5 array that I am migrating over to a 3x1.5T RAID5 array.Intermittently, a drive would drop out of the older array and it would automatically start rebuilding. I thought it was a bad cable or controller somewhere, so when I bought the three new drives, I bought a new controller for them all, too. I'm running both arrays side by side until I'm happy the new hardware is stable (one drive was DOA). Then I noticed one morning that both arrays were rebuilding themselves. This was in /var/log/messages:

Our home broadband (TWC/RoadRunner/San Diego) intermittently drops out for minutes at a time. General :: Pro Audio Recording With Fedora?

Nov 10, 2010

I have recently grown to love Linux for its fast reliable virus free and clean uncluttered operation for word, photo, spreadsheet and especially internet use. As a pro musician I've used Sonar on Windows XP for years and it's a great programme, however for various reasons I would like to abandon Windows completeley and I like Audacity, Ardour and Rosegarden. Although basic, these would get me through most of my projects as a guitar teacher. My questions are: is it considered essential to install a real-time kernel or can you get by nudging audio by 50 ms or so. Ubuntu Studio would be the answer I guess although on my HP dual core I get mouse and keyboard freezes with Ubuntu after 9.04! - weird. Fedora has always been rock solid on my machines although I understand that there is no real time package for versions after F12. Are there musicians out there that use Fedora? - which versions and what set up.

Ubuntu :: XScreenSaver 5.08 - How To Either Disable Or Uninstall

Jul 29, 2010

I added XScreenSaver 5.08 to her applications list. We've had issues with XScreenSaver and want to either disable or uninstall the application. We cannot figure out how to disable XScreensaver and revert to the original screensaver app that came with the system. When I use Snaptics Package Manager to either 'completely' uninstall', or just 'uninstall' the message says that I will uninstall the 'desktop'.

Does this mean I will uninstall only the desktop version of XScreenSaver applilcation? Or, does this mean I will uninstall the system desktop (in this case Xfce)? I'm a little hesitant to punch the button in case I blow off Xfce desktop! Our goal is to either disable or uninstall XScreenSaver 5.08. Then be able to use the screensaver that came with the system.

Debian Multimedia :: Xscreensaver Randomly Crashes X

Apr 16, 2016

My supposedly stable system was crashing. The problem was one or more specific screensavers--xscreensaver, the display manager (lightDM), and X itself are innocent as far as I can tell.

I'm on a Thinkpad T400 with Debian Jessie (8.4)/MATE/lightDM. I have libreboot and not proprietary BIOS. I like variety, so in addition to installing xscreensaver itself (the unofficial patched jessie version without the "out of date" nag, which I got from https://angband.pl/debian/pool/main/x/xscreensaver/), I also installed some extras from the official repository (xscreensaver-gl-extra, xscreensaver-data-extra, xscreensaver-screensaver-bsod). I enabled all the installed screensavers and asked xscreensaver to randomly cycle through them.

To my dismay, after variable lengths of time (usually within 20-60 minutes), when a random screensaver has been on for a little while (I'm guessing as it's about to go to the next random one), X crashes to a black screen. The only way to make the black screen go away is to kill X (which I mapped to Control + Alt + Backspace) then log back in. There are no useful logs anywhere except some cryptic IO error 11 entry in ~/.xsessionerros.

Now for the troubleshooting:

1) First I tried installing a more up-to-date version of xscreensaver (5.34-2), which I grabbed from the sid repository. This didn't work--same problem as described above. Therefore, I went back to the patched version for jessie (5.30-1 from angband.pl).

2) To exclude that the lightDM middleman was the problem, I disabled it and was logging in with startx. Problem did not go away. (I then rigged systemd to log me in automatically and for startx to run automatically once I'm logged in--who needs middlemen?)

3) To exclude screensavers butting heads, I uninstalled mate-screensaver and disabled anything from X that could be interfering (by running these commands in a startup script: xset -dpms; xset s 0 0; xset s noblank; xset s off). Problem did not go away. I kept this startup script nevertheless.

4) Finally, to exclude individual xscreensaver module(s) being the problem, I unchecked them all. Then I wrote down the names of my 20 favorite modules (which include some from gl-extra, some from data-extra, and bsod) and tested them in small batches, running xscreensaver with only 5 favorites checked at a time. After testing four batches of 5 and witnessing all 20 favorites both display and load without any X crashes, I went ahead and selected all 20 favorites. I left the laptop on overnight and in the morning (about 12 hours later) it's still going strong.

One or more particular xscreensaver modules are crashing X, probably at the time they are being loaded to be the next one to show. I think I already spent enough time on this, so don't really care to identify +/- troubleshoot the offending modules.
