Slackware :: Samba Server Won't Start In Slack13?
Feb 15, 2010
Up until a couple days ago, samba server worked perfectly. I don't remember doing anything with it except adding another share or two. I can still run SWAT, even from remote computers, but I still have the problem of starting the samba server itself.
#./rc.samba start
Starting Samba: /usr/sbin/smbd -D
/usr/sbin/nmbd -D
#./rc.samba restart
smbd: no process killed
[Code]...
After issuing the "start" option, I go into SWAT and the status page says samba's not running.

For the heck of it (and because I wanted to see if it was possible) I booted to the Slack13 DVD to see if I would be able to install from an online source. I was actually surprised that I could. Why can I only select the A series to install from an online source? Does it have to do with bandwidth considerations? I'm curious for if I wanted to install -current to begin with instead of just upgrading to it.I don't want to have to download all the packages. Just let it install from the net.

I'm trying to install mongodb (so called schema-less database). It requires libraries like libjs, libmozjs, spider-monkey and the like. I had an idea that installing xulrunner would provide most of that, but it doesn't do so in any nice way. I'm a bit scared to muck up my firefox/thunderbird/seamonkey system, which I suspect might easily happen if I tread wrong.

I have a new install of Slack 13 and upgrading to current will break a lot of things for my 4 year old son (he's a gnome guy, what can I say). I will be using this machine too, and I NEED KDE, but of course the stock KDE packages are unstable to say the least. I know I've seen people talking of downloading upgraded kde packages for slackware 13, but when I google, I find a lot of things complaining about the stock KDE and of course Eric's packages for current.

I am installing slackware 13 on a machine that already has slackware 64- current. I'm doing this to try LFS which needs a 32 bit host (I know about CFLS, but I'm trying to keep it simple). My current installation is on sda with / being on sda1. My new 32 bit installation is on sdb with / being on sdb2.
I didn't install LILO as I figured it would be easy enough to just edit the current lilo.conf and run lilo after rebooting from the installation and then rebooting again into the new 32 bit install. What keeps happening is that the system boots seemingly fine, but after some wierdness I realized that it is booting a kernel from the 64 bit install on sda1. I'm assuming this is a simple screw up in my lilo.conf but I'm not sure exactly how to fix it.
lilo.conf:
Code:
# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
# Append any additional kernel parameters:
append=" vt.default_utf8=0 quiet"
[Code]...

Where do I change the option to have samba start during the boot process? I've googled and I've found old posts that say it's a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 but in my semi-current box, I don't see the part about starting stopping the samba server.

how stable I can pretend slackware 13.1 is.... Im getting my share of problems with an "out-of-the-box" supposely "stable" release of the OS... I'm trying to start the NFS daemon on the server and I get:
[Code]...
Now I understand I'm not the only one to have that problem... apparently something to do with a kernel problem or something like that. I've found a website where the site maintainer reported the same exact problem, but his solution worked for him, not for me (of course!)... [URL] Basically, he says that its a problem with modprobe or init and reverting to the older version 3.6 would do it. Here's what he did: He downloaded & "upgraded" module-init-tools-3.6-i486-2.txz

Problem I have is the Samba server, it does not seem to start up the shares at boot. When I boot the system, nothing is available on the network, I have to run the Samba Server Configuration Tool everytime I want to access a share, edit a share, save and quit, then my network shares become available.I see Starting SMB services during boot up, it says OK.It worked good on Fedora13.

now everytime I restart my maveric box I have to
Code:
root@tux:~# start smbd
smbd start/running, process 16067
root@tux:~#
oh and stop firestarter. Ok the firewall issue, is probably simple. I am more concerned that an upstart task won't start. I have checked in boot-up manager, and it is asked to start. This was an upgrade from Lucid, where I hadno problems.

Dolphin will only open Samba shares if I open them by typing in smb://SERVER-IP. It also does not show up in the Network section of Explorer under Windows 7. How do I fix this? The only Samba share icon that shows up in Dolphin under Network --> Samba Shares is Workgroup. If I click it it changes smb://workgroup, but then it does nothing and shows no files. Here is my Samba server's smb.conf file.
Code:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP

the Akonadi server won't start correctly on KDE startup. I've not found the 100%-working solution for this problem yet. It seems like many Slackware users just remove the akonadi package Unfortunately, I don't have the access to my Slackware box right now, Here is what I've tried to do so far: 1) Make the mysql daemon executable:
[code]...
After doing those steps the Akonadi server still shows a window with errors on startup. As far as I remember the ~/.xsession-errors file contains an error like "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket /home/alexander/<some path that I forget, sorry>/mysql.socket.

I'm using slackware-current and I followed the instructions on how to upgrade the xorg-server from 1.7.7 to 1.8.1.
But when I tried to start X, there's the error:
Cannot find module "intel" (module requirement mismatch)
Cannot find module "vesa" (module requirement mismatch)
Cannot find module "fbdev" (module does not exist)
It looked like I have to recompile the whole X package, but I don't know how to recompile the package as well on which package to recompile.

I just moved my / from sda1 to an ide drive, hde1. i dont see how this could have caused any of these issues, but it did.
First my network card failed to start. i added a line in my rc.local file (where i put all of my additional programs, etc i want to start):/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
The above now starts my network card with my static ip configured. dhcpcd also worked but i wanted this static.
Now samba will not start. i have the following line in my rc.local: /etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start
This used to work just fine. at first i thought that samba may be trying to start before my network card gets an ip, but the line is *after* the network startup line. just to make sure, i made an additional script called startsamba which contained a sleep 60 followed by samba start, to delay the startup of samba even further.
The message samba reports is very vague, something like failed - core dumped. most of the core dump log is garbage characters, but here is the beginning which seems like it might contain some info:
Code:
ERROR: Can't log to stdout (-S) unless daemon is in foreground (-F) or interactive (-i) after the system starts, i can drop to a console and type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start" and the service starts just fine. i've also tried starting samba manually with "smbd -d" which also produces the core dump when started from rc.local, but not when started from a console after startup.

I have to rename a group of machines in my little samba domain (tbd backend) but there is an ugly bug that makes this impossible. have set 'rename user script' variable corectly, also checked all configurations. When i change computer name in my windows box, it shows an error saying something like "Error calling remote procedure"Looking on server side, username for the machine gets correctly changed in /usr/passwd, and also in samba database. But samba log says:

I've been trying to get Xmonad installed and keep running into dependency installation issues. So far, I've used slackbuilds to get everything I need for Xmonad. (I'm pretty new to linux still, but as far as I know, having 64bit slack shouldn't be an issue in running 32bit applications?)
I have-
ghc-6.12.1
haskell-mtl
The main issue I've had thus far is with the Haskell-X11 (1.5.0.0) dependency, I downloaded the slackbuild:

I get "unable to open file: /etc/samba/dhcp.conf" messages in /var/log/samba/log.* worked perfectly fine in 11.3. permissions are 755 on /etc/samba and all files are 644 or 600 in the directory. Starting manually gives same result. My 11.2 and 11.3 machines continue to work. this is a weird one and I don't see any posts relating to this. For other uses, the machine seems ok.

After my update to 9.10 I had not notice that CUPS, Samba, lighttpd (and maybe other serives that I've not missed until now) don't start up during system start no longer. After all, things look quite normal in the directory /etc/rc3.d, which has the appropriate links S20samba, S20lighttpd and S50cups, all of them working when I use them directly. But wait! Ubuntu uses updstart now, does it? I have yet to understand what that means to the classic startup scripts in /etc/init.d.

I've been trying to install samba the last couple days, every time I do apt-get install samba it says that its the latest version but there's no samba folder in /etc/ and when I try /etc/init.d/samba start (or stop or restart) I get no such file or directory errors.
I've tried apt-get --purge remove samba to remove it and then reinstall but it does nothing and after the reinstall I'm still left with the above problem.

Using 10.04. I use one machine mostly as a printer server: If it goes down for whatever reason I want to restart without having to enter any password. Samba seems to start and allow file shares, but does not start the printer sharing so I must manually enter "sudo restart smbd" to allow the printer sharing. From reading the various threads I guess that the samba "start command" is before the printers are "initialized" and thus are not "setup". So how can I make the samba "startup" last after everything else? I am not enough familiar with all of the commands to understand the thread posting to make it work.
