Fedora Servers :: BIND Dynamic Updates By DHCPD Not Working In 14?
Nov 28, 2010
The problem is that I have set up a test installation with DHCP server and DNS server on Fedora 14 and want to set up dynamic updates from the DHCPD to the NAMED. The problem is that any attempts to make updates of the DNS server fails with a "SERVFAIL" error. I can not even update it through the NSUPDATE tool. This is NAMED.CONF:
Code:
options {
directory "/var/named";

I am trying to install dhcpd on my Fedora 13 VM. I'm using VirtualBox and I installed using the i686 image. I did yum update and everything was fine. When I do yum install dhcpd , I get the following error.
Quote:
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process
No package dhcpd available.
Nothing to do
I also tried yum clean to clear cache but that didn't help either. I installed Fedora 12 in a different VM and tried but with no luck. Also tried installing using i386 DVD but same error. I should also mention that what I'm trying to do is that I'm trying to set up a relay agent on my Fedora gateway.

I am trying to configure a BIND DNS server to handle three websites on my home network, (my site, my sons site and our test site). Since my ISP uses dynamic DNS, we are using DNS2GO to redirect our traffic, 9EACH SERVER HAS IT'S OWN VERSION OF dns2go running).
My problem is that I can't figure out how to configure BIND since I don't have a static IP to enter into the named.conf or reslov.conf configuration files.

For some weird reason dhcpd fails to startup, but when I installed gadmin's dhcpd GUI configuration tool and click activate to start the DHCP server. It works, but for some reason I can't get it to start like a regular service. (Service dhcpd start) Fails without a error code or message.

Is there a way to use dhcpd to assign vpn clients their IP and configuration?
I'd like to have dhcpd listen on br0 (already set as 10.0.0.1) so that devices conecting through eth1 and tap0 (should I be using tun?) will get the same address pool.

I would like to send a specific option 15, domain-name, to a few clients on a network from a specific manufacturer. Usually all clients [URL] from the DHCP server, but when a client with mac address bellonging to manufaturer A asks for an IP address I would like to give them [URL] How would I go about doing this? Feels like it should be possible but I am not sure how.. I remember doing something similar in a microsoft DHCP server using vendor-identifier and passing out a vendow-specific option.
Quote:
class "xxx" {
match if substring (hardware, 1, 3) = 00:00:10;
option domain-name "yes.this.works.com";
}

I'm trying to get BIND running on one of our Fedora 10 servers, since we've had some issues with the DNS from our service provider. This BIND server is not authoritative for any domain, it's merely for caching purposes. I used the sample DNS file at [URL].., and modified it slightly with our internal IP addresses.
I'm getting the following errors when I do service named start:
Error in named configuration:
zone localhost/IN: loading from master file master.localhost failed: file not found
_default/localhost/in: file not found
zone 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa/IN: loading from master file localhost.rev failed: file not found
_default/0.0.127.in-addr.arpa/in: file not found
I also tried changing the line directory "/var/named"; To the /var/named/chroot/var/named directory with the same result.

I'm thinking about installing a DNS server on Fedora 13 running bind. I looked around for available bind packages and found only these:
Now the first one contains bind utils the second one is for running DNS in a chroot env and the last one is a bind with some DB backend.
Does this mean that fedora 13 doesn't support/.provide "standard" bind server (I mean the one to run without chroot/without db backend) ? Or am I missing anything in my repolist which is :

anyone come across a mysql driver for Bind that is already in RPM format? I know there is one that you can compile, but i was just curious if anyone knew of a MAINTAINED package that does that same thing?
==Edit== While i'm at it, does anyone know of a way to have bind call a STORED PROCEDURE, instead of directly querying a table? That'd be sweet. --Or, even having bind query a php file, or a webhost, would be good... I'm going to google that one now....

I've found a lot of pages of how to fix the issue on older releases of dhcpd and ubuntu.
#>dhcpd
#> ...
#> Can't create PID file /var/run/dhcpd.pid: Permission denied.
I have tried creating the file and giving it permissions to be accessed, but that isn't solving the issue. I tried to go through some of the older fixes, and one was really close to working but lacked the same folders as I have.
EDIT: one solution that worked was to use ln -s /var/run/dhcp3-server/dhcpd.pid /var/run/dhcpd.pid dhcpd3 -cf /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf at0

Can I tell the server to do this every time it started up to login to router and extract the ip address and send out via email?
The router can only access through web interface and below is what I copied from browser.

My university uses 802.1x Dynamic WEP, with PEAP, MSCHAPv2, and no CA certificate. Our IT department actually provides instructions for Ubuntu, and they work, but I can't get it to work in Kubuntu. Here's the instructions using the Gnome Network Manager applet:
- Change the LEAP setting to Dynamic WEP (802.1x).
- Change the Authentication setting from TLS to Protected EAP (PEAP).
- Leave the Anonymous Identity option blank.
- Leave the CA certificate setting to None.
- Change the PEAP version to version 0 if running 8.10, or Automatic if running 9.04+.
- Leave the inner authentication setting to MSCHAPv2.
- Enter your username.
- Enter your password.
- Select OK. A warning message will appear about having no certificate; click Ignore.
- Click Connect.
I'm using Kubuntu 10.10. All the same settings are there for the KDE plasma network manager applet, but the connection always fails immediately. How do I go about debugging this? Is there a way to test this out from the command line? (WiFi in general works fine, on regular WEP and WPA secured networks; just having trouble with this one).

i want to set up an email server both to receive and send emails. I also am on a dynamic ip scheme with my ISP. I do have a dynamic dns account with no-ip.org the Questions are:
-will somebody be able to send emails to me at the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
-will I be able to send emails from the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
I know i'll be able to login to accounts like gmail and yahoo and download emails from there.. but even that i don't know - even macroscopically how its done:
-is it the sendmail deamon that accepts the mail from <me>@gmail.com, <me>@yahoo.com, <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org?
-is it the sendmail deamon that does the sending of email (as well)?
-can it push emails that I want to send as <me>@gmail.com to the gmail smtp servers (and they in turn will push my email even further)?
-can it push emails from <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org to receipients?
and finally,
-WILL receiving pop/imap servers allow incoming email from my server? or due to the dynamic ip they'll assume I'm a spam server?

As far as I can tell, the server guides only explain a bit about what dynamic routing is, but not how to implement it.
My situation is this:
We require a server with 3 interfaces. One local, one to a vsat link and the other to a fibre link. The fibre will be the default route for Internet traffic but we want dynamic routing to automatically switch to the vsat link when the fibre link goes down (which happens fairly often in Zimbabwe!) and then switch back to the fibre link when it comes back up again.
The first option would be to handle dynamic routing on a Cisco router, but at the prices of Cisco devices here, it's not the most affordable option.

I have this strange problem which I am unable to web search on and not sure what to do next. My Linux knowledge is between basic to intermediate but I know how to troubleshoot general hardware problems.
My problem is that Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty 64-bit hangs while SFTP is active and dynamic IP changes. For example, I SFTP into my home server and transfer file then suddenly my ISP decides to renew my IP and give me a new IP while my SFTP client is still uploading files to my home server. This causes my SFTP client to stop working. Upon checking, my router is still running with a new IP lease from my ISP. My Linux box still powers on but typing anything from the keyboard does not make it "wake up" and put things on the monitor. Nothing seems to make it respond and the only way is to get about it is to power off and on. During that time, you cannot SSH into the server as there is no respond. SFTP into the server is not possible too because connection fails.
The server has all new hardware, latest BIOS, etc. Memtest86 shows no errors after running for more then 5 hours. I am unable to find anything out of the norm in /var/log/kern.log or in dmesg. All hardware seems to be working.
When I think about it, I tend to think OpenSSH (probably that is the default package in Jaunty) is causing this system hang whenever there is an interrupted connection from the outside world. However, I fail to agree with this is because I am sure the daemon and Linux can tolerate this situation without resorting to system hang. FYI, I have installed vsftp as well but this should not be a problem.
