Ubuntu Security :: Firewall "blocked" IP But Still Connecting?

Jul 27, 2011

I was using Transmission BitTorrent the other night, when I noticed that I was getting heavily spammed by one particular IP. I then stopped the torrents and disabled the network.I wanted to add my own block-list, containing this IP, to $HOME/.config/transmission/blocklists, but could not get it working. Transmission is supposed to parse this text file into binary format upon startup. I tried both allowed formats, but Transmission kept on creating an empty binary file (this was version 1.93 in the official repo, I have since upgraded to 2.33 by adding a PPA, and it now works correctly).

I then blocked this IP in the firewall outbound traffic policy, allowing Transmission, on the port number that I forwarded on the router, on the inbound policy. After a restart, I watched the torrents picking up speed as more peers connected, and then saw this IP getting blocked. However, the same IP immediately also appeared as a peer in one of my torrents.I then double checked all settings and log files, to ensure that there is no typo. The same IP that was shown as blocked in the log files, also successfully made a connection to Transmission. After a while I gave up, and shut down. The IP was an incoming connection, but was explicitly nominated to be blocked in outgoing traffic. The firewall was supposed to silently ignore this IP, not making a connection possible.

ICMP filtering was enabled, with the following not allowed:

- Address Masking
- Redirection
- Source Quenching

Now surely this is not normal? Is this a bug in ip-tables?Isn't this a serious security breach?

Every time I change my status via the Me menu, it knocks me off-line on three of my four accounts. how to disable (or even remove) the "Me" menu? It's only functionality is to control messaging and social networking services, right?

Server :: Ftp: Vsftpd With Firewall - External Ip Is Blocked Out With X

Jan 3, 2010

i have a server running vsftpd, and when i connect to it from the server itself using my externel ip address, everything checks ok, and i can browse files. but when i try to do the same on a windows computer on my network, this is what happens: [my externel ip is blocked out with x]

[Code]....

now mind you, my linux server is running from port forwarding from my router, which is connected to the main computer, and i have ssh and squid running as well. not sure if those two have any affect on the service. i think this is a problem with the firewall, because i have read somewhere that multiple ports need to be open for a passive ftp to work.

Fedora :: Connecting To Internet Using N Series In F11?

Nov 3, 2009

I have been through a lot of posts and was still unable to connect to the internet using wvdial utility after doing all the changes. I being a newbie to this operating system, didn't know how to get started. After going through a lot of posts, I came across an application that is going to be a part of Fedora 12 called ' blueman '. It is used to connect to the internet using a gprs enabled phone via bluetooth. It integrates itself with Network Manager making it even more easier to use. To install it type the following commands in the terminal:

su

Type in your password and hit enter. Then type

yum install blueman

The application is only 575kb and will install instantly. And after a reboot fedora will show an applet related to that application. Open it and click search to list all available devices and select your phone and then select bond to pair your phone with your computer ( if it isn't already). After bonding right click your phone and select serial ports>dial up service. this will make the gprs/edge/3G connection to appear in network manager and selecting it will connect your computer to the internet.

This was the bluetooth way. If you want to connect through USB, just plug in your phone and select PC Suite mode in your phone. The fedora installation will automatically detect your phone as a modem and the connection will appear in the network manager.

This works on all N series Nokia phones and also most other phones as well.

General :: Connecting To Internet With Fedora 14

Jan 7, 2011

This past fall, I formatted my hard drive and put fedora 12 on. Worked fine until my old hard drive decided to die. During the last few days of dying Fedora stopped being able to connect to my Linksys Wireless G router(I'm hard wired), or detect any connections. I just assumed this was the hard drives fault.

Now, I have a new WD hard drive with Fedora 14 on it and still cannot connect to the internet. I fear worst case scenario would be my ethernet port is dead but I wouldnt know how to detect that. I thought that it might be a problem of drivers also but couldnt find anything on this subject.

Fedora Networking :: How To Manage SMB To Work With Firewall

Mar 25, 2009

How can I make iptables allow my windows client to see my PC / smb shares? When I turn off the fedora firewall it just works fine, but how can I manage smb in a more secure way via iptables to work?
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 -j ACCEPT
But where do I get the correct address from? Will this example allow only 192.168.0.0 (is this a valid IP at all, usable by any PC? ) or anyone in the network (aka 192.168.0.*) to access my share?

Networking :: Internet Blocked In Ubuntu 9.04?

Jul 15, 2010

In my Ubuntu 9.04 installation, just a few days ago, I lost my usage of the internet. I still had internet access. Firstly though, there was a problem with the router, so I tried a friend's router (both Netgear DG834) and the friend's one worked. But in Ubuntu, I could not access any web pages or email. Skype works.

I tried using my netbook and that could access web pages okay. So then I booted my main PC into the old installation that I kept there of Ubuntu 8.04, which I am using now. And in this the internet works just fine, I can access websites and download and send email.

But in Ubuntu 9.04, it seems like something is blocking my access. I do not recall installing anything new, although something may have been updated recently. I can see the DNS servers from Ubuntu 9.04 and it gets an IP address from the router. What is the likely cause of the Internet being blocked for websites and email (but not Skype)?

OpenSUSE Network :: Properly Open Port Through Firewall?

Sep 27, 2010

I have properly configured my router to open a port for Transmission and Vuze. The OpenSuSE firewall settings are somewhat confusing, however. How do I add a port specifically for the BT protocol? I know it's the firewall causing issues, because when I shut it down, my BT apps roar to life, and die with a whimper when I turn it back on. In Ubuntu, opening a port in the router is automatically configured in the firewall; that is apparently not the case with this distro.

So, when I go to Yast Firewall, I see "allowed services" under the tabs available. When I hit that tab, I see a dropdown menu that contains services such as NetBios Server and Samba Server. Am I choosing one of those available and adding a port to it? Am I adding a custom service via the Advanced settings, and if so, why isn't there a way to label the service so that it shows up under allowed services?

Fedora Networking :: Connecting Linksys WUSBv2.8 To Internet

Dec 3, 2009

I am trying to connect my desktop to the internet via my Linksys wireless usb WUSB11v2.8 adapter. My network showed up in the Network manager as soon as I installed Fedora and it asked for my network key, but it still doesn't connect. It just keeps asking.I was reading that possibly the driver is not compatible with the OS. I heard about RPMs and the ndiswrapper program that supposedly is supposed to help with compatibility issues so I went and installed both via a direct ethernet connection.

I guess my question is now since I have these programs, what else do I need and how do I go about completing the installation? I pretty much need to be baby stepped by step into how to do this including the best place to install the software, what files do I need, and where and how if I even need to get my device's chipset.

General :: Adding Firewalls Nat Rules / Internet Is Totally Blocked On Eth1?

Oct 4, 2010

I have a centos5.3 server. I want to configure it as transparent squid proxy server. Internet is connected to eth0(192.168.0.100) and lan is connected to eth1(192.168.200.0/24) and eth1 ip is 192.168.200.1 .

I have configured it as dhcp, squid and its working fine.

Now I want to configure it as a transparent,so that no one has to manually configure in browser.

I just added a line

Code:
http_port 3128 transparent

to make it transparent.

Now while adding nat rules,

Quote:

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128
code....

Internet is totally blocked on eth1. And after stopping the firewall the internet comes.
