I am Trying to set up my desktop in order to access it from a remote computer using Remote desktop. I have ubuntu 10.10 and am using the included software remote desktop. When I run the programm is says i can only connect locally using the name "local host". I am trying to connect to my desktop from a vnc app on my ipod touch. It asks me for the ip address and the port.

I also install xrdp package, and followed instructions here: [URL]It actually worked using Remote Desktop application from my Mac or Windows box for a little while until I restarted the machine, thinking I can unplug the monitor and connect via remote desktop from then on. Then it stopped working.

I have tried messing with the few settings in Krfb, but none seem to have any impact. How do I open localhost:5900 and allow VPN tunneling to the host machine?
I would like to set up a remote desktop connection between two computers over the Internet. I already tested remote desktop within a local network but it's far from secure enough this time. On Windows XP, I am able to connect to my office via VPN client to connect to my office, then Remote Desktop to my local machine on the network.. Is there some way for me to do this with Linux? I find it really annoying to have to boot to Windows just to access my work pc.

This will enable me to have remote access via SSH command line.So far, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server + Ubuntu Desktop to a virtual machine. I can access this via SSH and locally via the desktop. However, in the real environment the only access I am going to have initially is via SSH.
I would like to be able to connect using Windows Remote Desktop or VNC (whichever is easier and most importantly - most secure) to the machine.. even though the desktop is on there, I need to somehow configure the remote access all from the command line.I've had a read of various forums and have been trawling support forums for days but can't find a working solution for 9.10 Server or that fits my situation above where I will not have any physical access to the desktop or machine to configure remote desktop. I have read the remote desktop setup and added port 6000 to firewall, added host name of server to xhost (nick@192.168.1.110). Added the line to /etc/gdm/custom.conf like in fedora guide (DisallowTCP=false). But i still get the error

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a friends computer when Windows died on it, and though she has had relatively few problems with it, she still occasionally has problems that are really hard to impossible to fix over the phone. She is also not very knowledgeable with computers, so I was trying to guide her through setting up so I could connect to her remotely and try to figure things out, but I cannot get it to work.
I personally don't use Ubuntu on my computer, I use openSUSE and KDE so that does add to the problem, though I have used Ubuntu and Gnome a lot in the past.
I had her go to remote desktop settings and allow connections from other computers and allow other users to control the desktop, and at first I had her require confirmation and a password but it didn't work without it either. When I try to connect, it just hangs for a while then times out. I tried using KRDC and just VNC in the terminal with the same result.
There should be nothing on my side preventing a connection, but I am not positive. I am not very familiar with remote desktop outside of a LAN either. I am just trying to connect using her IP address, I don't know if there is anything else I need to include. Is there maybe some other setting that needs to be changed or maybe her DSL modem/router is blocking me though I don't know why it would, especially since P2P programs work fine.

I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.

I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?
I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

I am very new to Ubuntu (any Linux) evironment. And it has been a long long time since I have dealt with seting up servers. I have done alot of searching but haven't found exactly what I THINK I am looking for.
I want to create a file server (I have created my Ubuntu server cd) and add it to my home network (all windows pcs). I need to be able to access it when away from home ( I work away from home mostly). I will be accessing this with a Windows 7 laptop.
What do I need installed on the server? Samba for the file server part. What else for the remote access? I also would rather not access the data via FTP. I would like it to come up as a drive in my Windows Explorer. If not, I remember back in college (20 years ago) when I could open a little window (XWindow maybe) on the other server.
An issue I see that might not be an issue. I have a static IP from my ISP. It comes into my home via their modem. I attach to the modem with a router. All my laptops connect to it wireless and this server will be wired. How do I hit the server and not one of the laptops with only having the one IP address? Each of these plus my external harddrive and printer have their own internal IP address' that I have assigned.

I've no experience of Linux at all and I've seen some notes about this with no luck.
I have 2 servers. One is an operational CentOS + cPanel server and the other is a blank CentOS server. I want to use cPanel's backup suite to backup our customers accounts but I want to do it so the blank server is mounted to the cPanel server, rather than an FTP backup. If that makes sense. I believe from previous experience that NFS is the way to go but I'm not sure.

I found Remote Desktop which opens vino-preferences and ticked the check boxes there. I started vnc-server and then I tried to connect to it from the same local host using vncviewer. I got no errors and the window with correct resolution came up. The problem is - that window is black and empty. I tried looking into Fedora docs but I haven't found anything useful there. I tried google and I found about 487693746874363 solutions and different ways of installing and configuring VNC server. I tried a few - none helped.
I wonder if there is a decent and consistent documentation about how to make remote desktop working in Fedora without having a real pain in the ass trying out those gazillion tweaks and tricks from various forums and blogs? After all Fedora 14 comes with that Remove Desktop thing available out of the box. I have 2 ubuntu machines. I used to use the ubuntu's remote desktop program to work remotely from home on my office box, but since I installed 10.04 it remotes in ok but nothing gets changed on the screen when I click. I see the mouse move fine. If I click on something and then drive to the office I see the remote screen was in fact clicked on with random windows open, depending on what i was clicking on. Why is the screen not refreshing?
