View 4 Repliestrying to get my little Encore USB wireless adapter to work on several flavors of Linux (Ubuntu 10,10, ElementOS, Xubuntu, and Puppy), I emailed tech support at Realtek. I asked where is the Linux driver for this product? I did this because there were no Linux drivers posted on their site and everyone here (and on Newegg) is jumping though hoops trying to get a working wireless connection with the Encore and similar dongles that use the RT8187b chipset. I didn't expect an answer, but felt better after my little vent. I get an email from Realtek with a driver. Realtek needs to promote Jerry -- a beacon of customer service in the age of the "get lost" school of customer relations. I have attached the driver below. Caveat: I have not yet compiled the driver, so I don't know much more about it than I've said already, although the archive appears to contain the source code.

I have loaded ndiswrapper and managed to get my D-Link usb dongle working (this is wireless N) but I need to disable my laptops built in rtl8187B wireless (they both connect at log on).
In Windows I just turn of the wireless switch but in Ubuntu this disables all wireless. I think I have to black list the rtl8178b driver.
I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 in my laptop. Everything works fine except for my wireless. It works, but much, very much slower the through RJ45, which is perfectly ok. When using wireless i can't even connect to any online messaging service and I need to reload pages oftenly. My security setting is WEP 128 bits ASCII and since I'm trying to follow the format suggested on the thread "HOWTO post a Wireless issue" I'll try to provide the infos like requested on it. I have a Gateway ML6721 laptop that uses a Realtek RTL8187B for wireless comms. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux. I am trying out linux using a usb stick, 16Gb with a 4Gb persistence. If I stay in the same room as the router there is no problem. If I walk too far, I get disconnected. Works fine in windows throughout the whole house. Is there a setting I can change or do I need to use a different driver?

I am using ubuntu 8.10 and everything I've read on this forum and others states that this version of ubuntu can use this device. However, it seems that my system doesn't even know the device is there. When I run "sudo lshw -C network", I get this:

I am considering installing CentOS 5.3 on my laptop, and currently the only thing stopping me is the WLAN in the computer. This laptop uses the RTL8187B USB dongle chip as the internal WLAN card, and support for it was only "recently" added to the kernel. Now, I know CentOS uses the 2.6.18 kernel, though not as "such", but rather its API, and have a LOT of hardware support, security updates and enhancements found in recent kernel releases backported to this kernel version (or rather kernel version API). This particular piece of hardware support was tricky at best and only began to appear in the Linux kernel up until version 2.6.24, which I do believe introduced a heavy change in the kernel driver API or something to that effect,
which would mean that driver code from a more recent kernel release (say 2.6.26/27) may not be all that portable to an older driver API version, hence, that's why I ask if support for hardware that has been only recently added to the kernel may be found in the CentOS kernel. I do not know how much further tweaked the CentOS kernel is in regards to the RHEL kernel, so I guess I could find out whether support is there or not by poking around the .src.rpm for each kernel (RHEL 5.3 and CentOS 5.3) and see, I was hoping, however that someone would know without having to poke around the source packages and the patches.
Got a laptop with a RTL8187B wlan card, installed opensuse 11.2 on a 50gb partition. Card was detected straight away but only connects when I enter ip addresses manually, DHCP don't work.
When it is connected it always stays at a speed of 1mb/s and it cannot ping my router or anything else.
Me kernel is 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop
Searched around the forums but no love, tried compat-wireless but it started crying about dependencies. Modprobed it too..

I have a realtek 8187b devid 8189 and tried connect to a wep encrypted connection I "borrow" frequently using iwconfig first and it wouldn't connect then I installed wicd and it says bad password. I've connected successfully using multiple other distros, openbsd, os x, and windows. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?If you need anymore info I can boot into slack and write it down or something.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.

I've been experiencing a problem with Fedora in which when I enable Wireless in Fedora, Wireless networking does not work in windows. HOwever, when disabled, it works correctly. Windows claims it is "not able to find any networks to connect to"
EDIT: It seems that when wireless is disabled manually on fedora before shutdown, there are no problems in windows.
I want to run networking on my laptops in different environment (home, office, airport etc). I found that Netowrk Manager assigns information from DHCP although I requested fixed IP and configured the gateway and DNS. If I reconfigure the DHCP server so that there is no free IP address, the laptop refuses to connect. When I remove the interfaces from the network manager, I get the fixed IP address, /etc/resolv.conf is not overwritten from DHCP but WiFi connection cannot be established, there is no dialog for setting WPA-PSK. The static IP address seems to be taken into account only if the DHCP server is not found. I need the static address at home and in my office because I need the possibility to ssh to my laptop from another computer but I need IP from DHCP possibly authenticating against RADIUS (Eduroam) when travelling somewhere else. Is there an easy way how to achieve it and how to switch profiles easily? And I cannot switch DHCP off because some devices in my LAN cannot work without it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having great difficulty with networking on a new Acer 5516 laptop (smolt):Firstly, the NIC card isn't recognized out-of-the-box so I followed Ubuntu forum thread. No luck*
I installed the appropriate Broadcom drivers. No luck*
* However, when I plugged in a USB Ralink DWL-G122 wireless adapter, this worked and, incredibly, the internal Broadcom BCM4312 started to work (see below). Even more bizarre, after turning the laptop off and unplugging the power, upon reboot with the Ralink adapter plugged in, the NIC was on and I did a yum update through eth0.
Sadly, none of the laptops internal networking works unless the Ralink adapter is plugged in. In fact, the gnome desktop is almost unworkable and unresponsive without the Ralink adapter up. Further, I sure that this was the reason the initial F11 install was frustrating with periodic unresponsiveness.
I've tried installing both F11 386 and x64 and have booted with a F10 live USB with no luck either.
I'm contemplating trying Ubuntu next but really would like to know if someone has been successful with Fedora.

Everything worked fine on kernel 2.6.33-6.But since the update to kernel 2.6.33-8, not always but nearly everytime I resume from suspend, my wireless network is disabled.When I right click the tray Icon the "Enable Networking" box is unticked and greyed out.Only a reboot brings networking back

What i am trying to do is:
1. I am trying to setup NIC via network not NetworkManager
2. I have assigned the ip to both NIC with #ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1
3. #Ifconfig shows my nic and ip
4. restart the service network .
5. #ifconfig shows nothing. NO NIC card
I dont want the network manager coz i dont want to install the gui on router and network manager works only in gui mode. ( i think my this understanding is correct)

I tried to configure the NIC with #setup command as well and select the dhcp option

I have a new HP DV9428nr laptop, which is AMD-64 and used to run Windows. Now that I have installed Fedora 12 on it, via Live CD x86_64, the internet isn't working. When I plug the network cable in, the GNOME network applet spins for a while and then displays the red sign showing that no connections have been discovered. I ran ifconfig: no visible issues with the network card. Both eth0 and lo are present. Furthermore, eth0 has an "inet6 addr:" field filled in, but no IP address. I am connected through a cable modem, and the internet light starts blinking when I plug the cable into the computer, so these two clearly know of each other but don't know how to talk.

I've got a Fedora 13 box running a bunch of VM's w/ bridged networking.
For some reason, every 10-15 minutes the vm's networking freezes and the vm's become unresponsive to pings and any other network traffic for 10-15 seconds. It eventually gets restored.
I don't see any error messages other than this occasionally on the host: eth0: received packet with own address as source address

I have a Samsung N130 with a Realtek 8192 wifi card (possibly 8192e, I'm not sure) and I am trying to run Fedora 12 on it. I used to run Ubuntu until trying their latest beta and realizing it's not very good, so I looked for something else. Ubuntu was at least easy to get the wifi working with just a few quick commands that were written out, word for word, in order, on the Ubuntu forums. I tried openSUSE on here and it didn't have wifi working out of the box either but people on their forums refused to give me actual instructions and just kept bumping me from thread to thread with people giving vague advice or else just telling me I was looking in the wrong place. I'm hoping that someone can give me clear and detailed instructions on how to get this wifi card working. Keep in mind that I am coming from Ubuntu and so I'm not super comfortable in CLI, if I need to do some CL stuff I will need clear and detailed instructions on how to do that.

I am currently trying to set up OpenWRT linux on the router. Because of the nature of my problem I have also posted this on their forum.I am having trouble connecting to my OpenWRT install via Fedora. Things seem okay in Windows, but when I try to connect from linux my laptop locks up completely and I have to hard reboot. View 3 Replies View RelatedI just upgrade my Fedora 14 to Fedora 15 RC1.I found the critical issue for me that Juniper Network connect(SSL VPN) didn't work for me again.I wonder if the network interface name changed impact this, but I am not sure about it as I didn't see any obviously error.I can connect the VPN auth page with my username and password after I switch my Java plugin to Sun JRE( I use google Chrome).As the Java VPN applet started, it appeared for a while and shutdown again. I think the VPN auth has been passed at that time, the problem might about creating the VPN Tunnel.
