Server :: Enabling Compression On Ultrium LTO-2 Tape Drive?
May 26, 2011We have been using an Ultrium LTO-2 tape drive to perform backups of certain information from our file server. Recently, the data that we are backing up has grown too large to fit on the tapes in their 200GB uncompressed capacity. I have been looking around for a way to enable the compression in the drive, but I haven't found much. I am not using any backup software, so I'm not sure if I'll even be able to. I write the tape using a simple 'tar' command, so there aren't a whole lot of options to be set. Is there a way that I can enable the drive's compression, or would I be better off running the tar command with the gzip or bzip flags?

Oct 29, 2010In oreder to run an application software on RHEL 3 ES server, I created a link forcefully using following command from root id:
# cd /lib64/tls/
# ln -sf libc-2.3.4.so libc.so.6
before that I copied file libc-2.3.4.so from a workstation with OS RHEL 4 WS so that a link can be created.
Now I am unable to run any command except cd & pwd and it gives error messaage as given below:
ls:relocation error:/lib64/tls/libc.so.6:symbol _rtld_global_ro,version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file ld-linux-x86-64.so.2with link time reference.
Before running this command libc.so.6 was pointing to libc-2.3.so file in path /lib64/libc-2.3.2.so.
I am now unable even to open a new window on the server.Please send me some solution as early as possible because this server is running production data and many users are runnig application on this server.

Mar 13, 2010I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.

Dec 9, 2009I have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

Fedora Installation :: How To Manage Server Remotely
Sep 22, 2009I try to use fedora 11 as my home server. The server should be remotely managed by VNC. A normal VNC-setup does not allow to log into the login screen, but that is what I need !!
Notice that I would like to maintain the sever using the normal gnome gui. I have been investigating lots of options to get VNC running this way, have been searching all over, but did not find any working solution. All solutions I found where based on XVNC which is not available for fedora 11 as far as I know.

Mar 31, 2010I have a server on my home network. It's currently running a DNS server (bind9) and an HTTP caching server (squid).What I would like to do is redirect all outgoing port 80 connections to the squid server and also make the server responsible for managing DHCP on the network.
Do I just need to install a DHCP daemon on the server, disable it on the router, then set my server as the default gateway and configure iptables to route all connections like I want? Or is it more complicated than that? Also, would that mean that all communication between two computers on the network will go through the server?

(nfsvers=3, soft). So I added _netdev. I expected from the system, that mount would be called twice in the init scripts: The first without those _netdev (s) and after bringing up the network then mounting all _netdev (s). But it seems, it is not working this way. Is anyone here, who can explain the (may OpenSUSE special) behaviour? I found in [URL] the information that _netdev is especially for nfs - so should work, shouldn't it?

Most applications used on the LAN are windows based, with a growing number of python apps. A friend suggested a Primary Domain Controller would be a better way to manage logins, resources etc. I don't wont to use a Windows based PDC, what would you suggest as a linux based PDC? I have heard about TURNKEY PDC, but it uses Samba 3 and apparently doesn't handle Active Directory in Windows.

By setting up dovecot to use mysql, i can query username and password for authentication but how do i create a user and edit its information in the database? Poastfixadmin only use database that was created along when installing it.
