Fedora Networking :: Samba Broken / Error 6291, The "force User" Option Is No Longer Working?
Jun 15, 2009
I ran "yum update" on 03-06-2009 and it updated my samba version from
3.2.8-0.26.fc10.x86_64
to
3.2.11-0.30.fc10.x86_64
My network shares then became read only! After some digging it turns out my system is not working because of Samba bug 6291, the "force user" option is no longer working.
Ideally I would run another "yum update" and that would fix the problem. Apparently the bug has been fixed in Samba 3.4.0pre2 - when can when we expect that to be released and included when I do a "yum update"?
Alternatively how do I get back to version 3.2.8-0.26.fc10.x86_64 ?

I think an update or something has killed Samba on my Karmic box. it can see Windows shares OK, but it no longer appears on the Windows network.I have not changed my smb.conf for months, so something else has been modified.Looking in the logs I can see the following in "log.winbindd-idmap" after restarting Samba
Code:
[2010/03/03 10:07:20, 0] winbindd/idmap.c:201(smb_register_idmap_alloc)
idmap_alloc module tdb already registered!
[2010/03/03 10:07:20, 0] winbindd/idmap.c:149(smb_register_idmap)
[code]...
All other networking seems fine (internet, Synergy+ etc) it's just sharing out to the Windows network that is broken.

I am trying to set up a samba share, that uses a common group so that all users that connect to it will have write permissions to all files and folders. But I cannot get the "force group" option in smb.conf to work. When I create files on this share, it's using the user's default group, not the group specified with "force group". In smb.conf, I have:
[shared]
path = /ext/shared
writeable = yes
guest ok = yes
[code]....
The strange thing is when I create folders, it works fine, the folders are created with the proper permissions and the group is assigned to it. It is just when creating files that it does not work. I have read through some documentation and other posts, but have been unsuccessful setting this up.

I'm running Maverick Meerkat 10.10 x64, and I'm trying to set up a Samba share with user security. In other words, when accessing the share, I want to be prompted for my username and password. Everything in my smb.conf file looks ok to me, but the shares are still accessible with no user security, and I don't know why. The smb.conf file is below:

I have installed Samba 1.2.63-0Ubuntu4 (system-config-samba) on Ubuntu 10.04, and it has been working without any issues for a few months now, but now the username/password authentication does not work anymore and I can't figure out why
I have tried changing username/password(thinking maybe i forgot the correct credentials) and the new username/pass does not work either.
I have also tried "sudo service smbd restart" in terminal to restart samba but this does not work either
I can still see visible shares when browsing server via "network neighborhood" on XP,,, and can access the shares that do NOT require authentication
username/password are made up of standard characters as well

I am trying to set up my Ubuntu 10.04 netbook to see my WinXP desktop's files and vice a versa. I followed the steps in this tutorial thread: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows. I got as far as "Time to add yourself as an samba user." at this point I keep getting the following error:

I've recently been experiencing an issue connecting to my Samba shares on a Ubuntu 10.4 server box on my network from a Windows 7 client. If I use Ubuntu 10.10 on the same machine, or a Windows XP Virtual Machine running under both Windows and Linux host the share works absolutely fine.
What happens is if I browse to the hostname or the IP address I see a login prompt (there is access control) but my username and password no longer work. Before I didn't need to login as they are the same as my windows credentials.
I'm not sure what information/logs etc would be most relevant so I've posted some information, if any more is required then let me know where to find it and I'm sure I'll be able to get it.
Here is the last few days of the log when I believe it was working, there are no entries since.

I have been a happy Fedora user since late in the F9 release and now use F11 32 bit.Two days ago my 2wire modem/router took a dive. My ISP sent us a Motorola 3347-02 and since then my computer will not reach the internet. I have read everything I can and still haven't found the solution! Some things that I have tried: Disable network manager and do it manual, configure static IP, wipe system and reload, installed F11 on another computer.None of these have worked. Now I am booting from Ubuntu and have no issue but I can't stand Ubuntu.

Whenever I try to install something with apt-get, I get a list of errors. Most of the time, the package I want to install gets installed anyway. However, this time samba stopped working, and I discovered that it was no longer on my system. I'm not sure how this happened - I haven't tried to remove it. So, I tried to reinstall it with 'apt-get install samba'. This time, the package did not install, and I got a long output from the terminal:

I'm running 10.10 on a pretty fresh install with a brand new system I built especially for Ubuntu. For some reason, I'm beginning to have trouble with accessing my Samba shares from this computer. I have a Windows Home Server also running on my network and I have to be able to access the files on it.At first Nautilus showed "SERVER" in the folder tree when I clicked on "Network" and everything was working great. A couple of days ago my WHS "SERVER" suddenly no longer showed up in Nautilus and I had to mount the WHS server manually (via "Connect to Server...").
Now, today, even that doesn't work. When I try to mount manually I get the error "Failed to Retrieve Share List from Server". I can now no longer access the WHS from Ubuntu at all.Why has my ability to access the Samba shares on my WHS deteriorated over time to the point where I can't access them at all?? Any ideas?I have other systems on this network (Mac and Windows) and none of the others have any problems at all with the WHS. Re-booting WHS and router has no effect. I've changed nothing in my set-up. Is this update related?

I can't get the samba server to work on a Fedora 13 system. First of all, I've activated the "smb" service. After this, since I couldn't find any samba configuration tool in Gnome, I switched to KDE and launched Menu - Computer - System Settings - Advanced - Samba. I typed in my workgroup and netbios name and added a share (2nd tab). Then I added my user name to the blank list "samba users" (4th tab), which wasn't very effective, because this list is blank again when I leave (OK) and reopen this config tool.
From a windows machine, I can't access this Fedora system. Netbios doesn't work (ping netbios name - ...could not find name...) and trying \IP in the explorer shows an error message "Windows cannot find...".
Btw firewall and Selinux are both deactivated.
When I open Dolphin on the Fedora locally and type "smb://localhost" it *does* show a logn window, but no matter what I type in there, it just shows this login windows again after clicking OK.

i have a windows xp machine with filesharing enabled and the shares set up and ready to go i have a laptop on which i did a fresh install of fedora 15 with samba and all the necessary packages to make the fedora machine a samba client to the windows machine.
my problem is that when i go into nautilus and click on the network tab it shows nothing not one single computer...the fedora machine doesnt even show up.....i have done all the tests i can think of and confirmed that the smb service is running, the nmb service is running, samba is allowed thru the firewall and all the computers are in the same workgroup..yet neither one can see each other even more frustrating is when i go to mount a windows share thru the terminal it shows a successful mount (as i type in the command hit enter and recieve no errors) BUT when i go into the mount directory and open the new directory i made for the samba share it shows nothing there not even when i go into the windows machine and add a file to the shared folder...PLUS for some strange reason the /mnt directory already had two empty files called "home" and "boot" already in it i have no clue what thats about but ok, then on the windows side i go into "network places" and click on "show workgroup computers" and the windows machine will show up but not the fedora machine.
these are the commands i have used to install and get samba working- "yum install samba system-config-samba samba-client cifs-utils" "service smb start" anyway until i can figure this out i have decided to start from scratch and erase samba from the machine completely and i am hoping that maybe some one can read all this and come up with some ideas...maybe there is just something i forgot when i was setting this up yesterday its possible i just went to fast and skipped a step again all i want is the fedora 15 machine to just be a samba client with read/write priviledeges

I have edited my /etc/fstab file in order to have it automatically mount a windows network share at startup.
The problem is, that it isn't really working during startup. After I log in, in order to make it mount I have to open the terminal and enter "mount -a".
The following is my fstab file:
Code:
I suspect this has something to do with my laptop not having made a network connection when the entries are mounted, but I'm not sure. How would I go about finding out about any errors?

I was successfully using samba + fedora directory server in fedora 10 as a primary domain controller for my home network (achieved mostly by following barry905's instructions here: [url].
After upgrading to fedora 11, some of the pdc functionality no longer worked.
For example, when i ran 'pdbedit -Lv', i got:
Code:
I was able to fix this by adding to the [global] section in /etc/samba/smb.conf:
Code:
I also found that i could no longer join an xp computer to the domain. i discovered that for some reason, the samba administrator password had been cleared. after running:
Code:
That was fixed.
The last problem, which i have still not fixed, is that roaming profiles no longer work. when i try to do a domain login as user 'htpc' from an xp machine, i get the following message in xp:
Code:
Here's an excerpt of my /etc/samba/smb.conf:

i'm using Ubuntu in my office. I have to report two issues with network connectivity.1. Wireless doesn't work if come back after suspend/hibernate the computer. The work around I follow is,a. Turnoff the wifi and restart the computer. (It won't shutdown. have to do force using the power button)b. Reinstall the network-manager_0.8-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb and network-manager-gnome_0.8-0ubuntu3_amd64.debc. Restart the computer (Again it won't shutdown. Need force.)d. Now wifi will detect the networks and shutdown works fine hereafter.2. Sometimes the wired gets disconnect frequently (thrice in 2minutes). Physical connectivity is good and working well in Windows.

I am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.

I am writing a shell script that unzips a ZIP file into an existing hierarchy of files, potentially overwriting some of the files. The problem is that the unzip command asks for confirmation: replace jsp/extension/add-aspect.jsp? [y]es, [n]o, [A]ll, [N]one, [r]ename: y
This is unacceptable for a script.I need an option to force unzip to overwrite the files.I did not find in the man page nor with Google.

I have a loadable module, simple enough I believe it should run on any 2.6 kernel. I want to force the load and test that assumption. How can I do it?
ismod does not seem to notice the -f in 2.7 modprobe has -f but cannot locate the module. No go. So I read the manpage for modprobe which says: modprobe looks in the module directory /lib/modules/'uname -r'.So I copied MYMODULE.ko to /lib/modules/2.6.(the only directory in here) and type: modprobe -f MYMODULE.ko.Still can't locate MYMODULE.ko.I notice there are no other .ko modules in that directory; so I go in deeper to kernel/drivers/char, guessing about the char directory, and copy MYMODULE.ko there.
