Fedora Servers :: Vi Editing Etc/shadow - E45 'readonly Option Is Set - Add To Override
Jan 8, 2010
I'm learning to configure tftp-server and using vi editor - google search not helpful at least what comes up first - maybe different in Fedora ?
[url]
Code:
But . . . vi editing etc/shadow I get . . . E45: 'readonly' option is set (add ! to override)
In INSERT MODE - do I add ! as !wq instead of :wq as I found in google search (that's NOT working) - - or - do I add ! on the line to set tftp server password to * -or - what?

On one of my servers I see this when I log in. What does this mean and how can I get it to go away? Everything seems to work fine, but none of my other machines give this error.

I am using FC15.I need a kernel with a different configuration - with the "Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop)" option in the Processor Type and features menu. I need this to support my firewire audio device. I would like to build a new kernel RPM from the SRPM so that i can keep a clean system with RPMs for all files, and I don't really want to manually override the kernel bypassing RPM.I am following **exactly** the process described there - I install the SRPM, unpack the source, then use the starting sample config files in the BUILD folder to create a new customised .config file with the new option, then copy this back to the SOURCE folder.
This works perfectly if I make a standard kernel. But I cannot get the process to work if I change the config file. Every time I compile I end up with exactly the standard kernel -- a vanilla i686 kernel, without my custom config.I believe the problem is that when I run rpmbuild to compile the kernel, this process overwrites my config option. I found that there is a script (merge.pl) which creates new config files dyanmically for all kernel options based on fragments in the SOURCE folder. It looks like the script never uses the config file that I am putting into the SOURCE folder.The wiki page suggests using this command to copy my custom config file cp .config ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES/config-`uname -m`

I would like to send a specific option 15, domain-name, to a few clients on a network from a specific manufacturer. Usually all clients [URL] from the DHCP server, but when a client with mac address bellonging to manufaturer A asks for an IP address I would like to give them [URL] How would I go about doing this? Feels like it should be possible but I am not sure how.. I remember doing something similar in a microsoft DHCP server using vendor-identifier and passing out a vendow-specific option.
Quote:
class "xxx" {
match if substring (hardware, 1, 3) = 00:00:10;
option domain-name "yes.this.works.com";
}

I just got DHCP working, but I need to add a "Pre-Defined Option" for the Cisco VoIP network here. At least that's what it's called in Windows. This "Pre-defined Option 150" is necessary on Windows dhcp servers tied to Cisco VoIP networks, but I have no idea where to start getting that set up in Fedora.

I upgraded to F14 from F13, and when the process was complete, I noticed on my desktop, I have a strange drop shadow on the left-hand corner. As if it's shadowing an invisible window. You cannot interact with it, it's not "really" there.It is very annoying, and I can not figure out what it is, or what is causing it. I've checked all my plasma widgets and things like that, but it still persists.
Anyone run into this before or have any ideas?Here is a screenshot showing the shadow, I intentionally set my background to white, so you could see it best. But it shows up on top of any wallpaper. and you can clearly see it underneath translucent term windows/etc.

Has anybody been able to get NX (Nomachine) running on Fedora 10 configured using a shadow session of the local desktop (X11-local). I am experiencing some kind or cookie creation error, perhaps privilege related?
FYI. Normal unix-kde sessions work fine (e.g. Giant on Box) and shadow sessions of an existing unix-kde session works fine too. A shadow session of the local display is a bust.
Here's the error log:
Code:
NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 4076
NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command
NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
NX> 285 Setting the preferred NX options

This is weird, today I updated my system and while trying to visudo from single user mode got
"cannot read /etc/shadow: Permission denied"
which kept me from doing anything until I switched to file permissions of 400 on shadow, then back. Is this being experienced by anyone else or just me? /etc/security/limits.conf doesn't seem like it wants to change in enforcing mode either and I can't find any alerts to provide clues on the situation.

I'm trying to setup ssh access on my Fedora 12 laptop. I get the following error message in /var/log/secure when I try to login from another machine using ssh and the login is denied:
Code:
sshd[3025]: error: Could not get shadow information for <user>
sshd[3025]: Failed password for <user> from <ip> port <port> ssh2
If I do a 'setenforce 0' I can login and no error is logged.

I've been trying to write php or perl code to generate the sha-512 password hashes in fedora. I've been unable to do the hashing which is encoded in the shadow file on fedora core 11. Does anyone have php or perl code which provides the hashing algorithm. (All of my attempts result in the encrypted hashing being longer than 86 character -- the length that crypt says the sha-512 should be)

I turned my home PC running Ubuntu 10.04 into a server, and so i am so lost, after reading like a 10-20 different guides and/or official docs, I am totally lost.
All I wanted was to create a custom 404 error page...i read about how people edited .htaccess files to customize error pages, i tried and failed also, editing apache2.conf, I got lost and i dont wanna mess up everything and also, how you're supposed to not touch either of those as its not how it should be done and instead you need to edit httpd.conf and i did and FAILED! again...
Also how do I make it so that I can make subdomain(s) on my site? and wth is a name server and where do I get one?

I am trying to write a file to a SD card in my card reader.When Ubuntu first boots in and I open up the SD card It gives the option to create folders and files. However after a second or two the window closes and then will only let me vew the files.Does anyone know how I can fix this so that the SD card is able to be written to?The lock is not on the SD card, and under permissions it states that I have permission to create and delete files.I am using an up to date version of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04I have tried searching for a solution but cannot find anything relevant that works
Edit :

I am following a gtk2-perl tutorial, so I wrote the test program, installed gtk2-perl, and got this error:
Code:
Can't locate readonly.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.10.1 /usr/share/perl5/site_perl/5.10.1 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib/perl5/core_perl /usr/share/perl5/core_perl /usr/lib/perl5/current /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/current .) at ./test.pl line 7. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at ./test.pl line 7.
I googled readonly.pm, and figured out it's part of some Readonly module.But how do I install it? Preferably using the Arch package manager?

Up front: the per browser (or per process, if you will) part is the important part here. I'm well aware of the /etc/hosts(and its Windows counterpart), but would like to avoid this system-global method.
What tools exist to override the IP for a given (i.e. configurable) name per browser? For Firefox there are "Modify Headers" and "Tamper Data". Both of them do not appear to be suitable for my case, because the DNS lookup is done before that. So I can only modify the HTTP headers (e.g. the Host header), but not influence the IP to which it gets sent. But manipulating to what IP it gets sent is exactly what I want to do.
