View 4 RepliesI have just manage to set up a number of computers using NComputing thin clients. I have set up 5 user accounts.People will be using these account randomly. So what I want is to set up everything as it should be and that to be the default setting. If users download files or make changes to the files these should be for the session. On startup/shutdown all the files and changes should be deleted this way the next user can find the machine clean. And also there is limited maintenance to be done.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor the second time in a week, I have set up an unmanaged CentOS 5.5 Storm Server at StormOnDemand, only to discover a ton of unauthorized changes to binaries (updated file checksums and sizes) on the server shortly thereafter. The time stamps do NOT change. If the time stamps did change, I would be hunting down ahat was doing some auto-updates. But the time stamps are not changing. This leads me to believe that either these servers are suffering from:1. A virus or hacker is compromising the box.2. system corruption.3. Something else? To eliminate the possibility of number 1, I toasted the first server and started over with a new server and enabled their firewall from the start to only allow access for two IPs via SSH... my IP and my biz partner's.
Then, one of the first things we installed was a system we created that maintains a snapshot of most directories on the system so that it can be used to watch the live directories for changes. At 4:07am (server time) this morning, we received notice from this system that a massive number of files had changed in these directories. Again, no file time stamps changed. So, my question is this... is there any legitimate reason in a fairly standard CentOS 5.5 install that would cause so many files to change?
I have to display from the list of files given as parameters the name of the file with the largest number of words and their number.(with AWK)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use ssh-keyscan to get some known_host file population going on, but I have a ton of hosts I want to scan, all with multiple aliases in /etc/hosts. Is there a way to use my current /etc/hosts file to do an ssh-keyscan instead of making a special list of hosts that (from what I've read) ssh-keyscan needs?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a utility that would do the following:1. Be run manually on a list of files whose sizes should not change, to get a control file containing the sizes of each file.2. Subsequent manual runs would report any changes in size of any of the files in the list, and allow option to accept the new sizes.3. Be run as a cron job to check for changes in the file sizes and send an email alert if a change has occurred since the last time it was run.The purpose is to detect possible hacks of key files on a website. It would not include files expected to change, but just those that should not change. It would be run manually a few times to get the control list one wants to monitor.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI always use VNC to check my server for updates, and this morning I started the xvnc4viewer to vnc into my server and it keep asking for a password. I never setup a password because I do this local from my laptop, and I am the only one who uses my laptop. I had to go to my server and check the setting in System > Preferences > Remote Desktop and found them all changed. There was a password setup and there was a check mark in the you must confirm each access to this machine there some security update that changed all these setting? Sometimes when I do updates I don't know what is being changed on my server

I am running Karmic (9.10) on my macbook air (2,1) and although many things work fine (I wrote about it here:[URL]) one of the last things that doesn't work is setting the screen brightness. The FN-F11/F12 combo does bring up the brightness adjustment notification window (top right) and I can change the setting, but it has no effect UNTILL I reboot or suspend to RAM and reboot.
A related issue is that the brightness doesn't automatically adjust to the surrounding brightness.
When I first installed Maverick on my Dell Laptop, I had a slick-looking notification display when I changed the volume via the media buttons. However, I made some changes to get the media buttons to control the PCM volume channel, and it now seems I'm stuck with this ugly notification that I cannot figure out how to get rid of:I'm not entirely sure this is what borked my original volume notification, but it was around this time I noticed the change.

System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options -> Remember Currently-Running Applications I have Skype added to the startup applications list. This works fine. After doing the above, two instances of Skype are starting up every time - and I have not checked the "Automatically remember ... " checkbox. I could not find a way to undo this. After doing the above again, three instances of Skype are starting up every time.

I want to change the default resolution of 1280x1024 to 1024x768. Setting at boot using the space bar or the KDE display (personal settings) does not survive the next boot. In yast or yast2, hardware, there is no monitor selection (something wrong here?).
Using root, run level 3, the command sax2 --vesa 1024x768 does nothing.
or sax2 -m 0=fbdev does nothing.

KMail 1.11.4, KDE 4.2.4: I'm migrating from WinXP to Mandriva, and installed KMail at the weekend. Works fine, but I have a niggle - the message list displays headers grouped by month order. I'd like the option of having a simple list (no groups), and suspect that it could be done - but I haven't been able to find out how. I've checked in the Handbook without success, and a search in LQ hasn't turned up anything yet.Any suggestions gratefully received. If this isn't the right place for a KMail query,

Running Jessie 8.2 and Icedove 38.4.0. I just applied some updates and now Icedove only displays the number of unread messages in the folders.
Previously, it displayed the number of unread and the total number of messages in neat columns. Now it is a single number of unread in parens.
Is there any way I can get the display back to the previous format of unread# and total#?
