Ubuntu Networking :: Verify Whether A USB Device Is Recognized As A Modem?

Mar 4, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 KK (UNR) on my Netbook and I use the Huawei E5830 as UMTS modem. I can connect to the E5830 through WiFo (no problem at all) and USB. How can I verify whether the E5830 is recognized as modem when connecting it to USB? It changes the mode from USB storage device to USB modem, however I think I can not access it as a modem.

Fedora Networking :: ZTE USB Modem Not Being Recognized?

Nov 20, 2009

I have installed the KDE spin and am liking it so far. Except for the fact that I cannot get onto the internet. I rely on this ZTE USB wireless modem for internet and that just would not get recognized in Fedora. Plus, my Windows installation is down and I would love to keep it that way if at all possible.

I have followed a few instructions on this particular problem. I have modified the menu.lst file to account for the usbmodserial and product. The usb_modeswitch program has also been installed and the usb_modeswitch.conf file has been edited with the values I got from the 'lsusb' command's output.

But the curious thing is that when I actually execute the usb_modeswitch command, I get a message saying that there are no drivers for the ZTE device. Which means that I cannot go onto the wvdialconf part of it at all. Basically at this point I dont have a modem, according to Fedora. But it does get recognized as a ZTE device. That tells me that there is something right about what I have done so far and may only need to do a few tweaks here and there.

PS - I am based out of India and this is a Tata Indicom Photon (NOT Photon Plus) connection for which I have a USB device which acts as a modem.

Fedora Networking :: 11 - Huawei E169 USB Modem Not Recognized

Nov 26, 2009

I am trying to get a Vodafone USB modem to work - Huawei K3765 (which is a rebranded E169). It's supposed to be recognized by the kernel and just added through Network Manager, but - no luck. I also installed vodafone-mobile connect from here: [URL] (as well as the other packages). What happens when I start it - it doesn't see the modem. It's seen as a CD drive, and clicking "eject", "unmount" or "remove safely" on it doesn't help - it disappears, then several seconds later appears as a CD drive again.

Hardware :: USB Modem P300U Not Recognized As Modem Under Debian?

Jun 17, 2011

I have this USB modem P300U(SIM600 chip based) which works fine under wind@ws because it has it's own driver, but the clever seller told me that it worked under Linux as well. It was with Redhat 8 but I couldn't get redhat 8 to download. And until now absolutely false.

I have Debian with Kernel 2.6.32-5-686 I just want to send sms through this modem. It's not recognized as modem I'm frustrated because it's not useful for me if it doesn't work on Linux I looked for info but I can't make it work. What I get in my debian is:

Ubuntu :: USB Modem Hauwai EC1260 Not Being Recognized?

Jan 15, 2010

I own a Tata Photon plus usb modem which is a Hauwai EC 1260 and am not able to configure it on my ubuntu installation.

I have used it perfectly on my Mandriva/openSUSE installation so there should not be any question about its not supporting linux.

the menthod I used to connect to the internet was

lsusb :- to find the vendorID and productID.

modprobe usbserial vendor=0xAAAA product=0xBBBB with AAAA and BBBB being vendor and product ID respectively.

wvdialconf : to create the /etc/wvdial.conf file followed by subsequent editing of the file to insert username and password in it.

finally wvdial ... to dial the connection. The file /etc/resolv.conf was also edited the first time to include the nameserver values

but in case of ubuntu everything fails as soon as I fire wvdialconf command. It terminates with and error stating "modem not found".

In case of Mandriva/openSUSE wvdialconf used to check ports 7 to eight ports but in ubuntu it checks only 4 ports which perhaps arr labeled S0 to S3.

Please help me to sort this thing out.

One probable error might be due to the mounting of virtual CDROM inbuilt into the device which contains the installation files for its being configured on windows.

So, it appears that somehow the audio device controller in my laptop is not recognized or its driver disabled, possibly by pulseaudio. Sound works fine in Windows 7 part of this dual-booted laptop.

General :: Software RAID Device Not Recognized - Can't Access Array

Aug 3, 2010

We ran out of space on our server hard drive, so I installed 2 x 1GB drives, set them up as a software RAID1 array, copied the contents of /home to it, mounted it as /home for testing. Everything OK, so I unmounted it, deleted the contents of the /home folders (don't worry, we're backed up), then remounted the array. Everything was fine until we rebooted. Now I can't access the array at all; during booting the error "mount: special device /dev/md1 does not exist" comes up twice, and manually trying toe same issue. The relevant line from fstab reads:

/dev/md1 /home ext3 defaults 0 0

However, using webmin shows only md0, the RAID0 device on which the OSD was originally installed. There is no /dev/md1 device file. The mdadm.conf file reads as follows:

# mdadm.conf written out by anaconda
DEVICE partitions
MAILADDR root
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid0 num-devices=2 uuid=76fd4050:fb820568:c9bd3a59:ad3e70b0

So it's not listed; I'm assuming this is significant. Am I right, and whether I am or not, what can I do?

General :: MCP61 Audio - KDE4 Only Recognized The Output Device As ALC1200 Analog

I finally decided to transition to a 64-bit install (AMD64). (same machine, just reinstalling as a 64-bit kernel starting w/ a Debian squeeze netinstall image) My audio chipset is nvidia MCP61, and it was working perfectly under a 32-bit kernel (I did the transition because a poorly-written system backup script (my fault) hosed /usr, /bin, and /sbin) When everything was up and running:

*: KDE4 only recognized the output device as ALC1200 Analog
*: kmix only had a single channel(master)
*: alsamixergui did recognize all the channels
*: some games (sauerbraten, for example) had no sound in KDE4.
*: some games (warzone2100, for example) did have sound in KDE4.
*: the games that had no sound in KDE4 did have sound in fluxbox.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cable Modem Networking - Can't Connect To Each Other On The Home Network

I just got connected to Charter Cable Internet service a few days ago and I'm having a weird problem with my home network. Prior to this my network worked fine. On my network I have a desktop running Ubuntu 9.10/64 and Virtualbox with WinXP installed, an HTPC with Ubuntu 9.10/32 installed and a laptop dual booted with Ubuntu 9.10/32 and WinXP. The desktop and HTPC are hard wired to a wireless router and the laptop is wireless. The cable modem is hard wired to the router. I have samba installed and UFW is disabled. The problem is: with the cable modem turned off or on standby, all machines connect to each other and can transfer files, etc just fine but when I activate the cable modem all of the machines can connect to the Internet but the machines running Ubuntu can't connect to each other on the home network. If I boot the laptop into Windows, it can connect to the Linux machines just fine but if I boot it into Linux, it won't connect to the Linux machines but it can connect to the Internet and as far as the desktop, Ubuntu won't connect to the network but Windows running in the Virtualbox with bridged networking can connect to all of the machines.
