Fedora Networking :: FTP To Laughlin From Windows 3.11

I was recently asked to upgrade a Fedora4 machine to Fedora 14 after the hard drive on our server crashed.I have been able to sftp to and from Windows7 machines and to Fedora 4 machines, but I cannot ftp to the Fedora 14 machine from the Fedora 4 platforms nor our Windows 3.11 machine.
The ability to ftp from the Windows3.11 machine to the Fedora 14 machine is a necessity for our operations.I am sorry as I am very new to networking, so I do not know if this is a problem with security certificates, authentication, or if the platforms are completely incompatible.

Recently I upgraded my Fedora 13 to its latest (stable) version Fedora 14 Laughlin. Things seemed to have gone well until I noticed that my evolution mail client stopped working. When I clicked to open Evolution, it loaded but immediately it got hanged, and every time I did I didn't work. I posted this question in fedora forum it self many views and no response. Can anyone in this form guide me as to why this is happening and how to rectify it?

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I've been experiencing a problem with Fedora in which when I enable Wireless in Fedora, Wireless networking does not work in windows. HOwever, when disabled, it works correctly. Windows claims it is "not able to find any networks to connect to"
EDIT: It seems that when wireless is disabled manually on fedora before shutdown, there are no problems in windows.

Linux OS : Fedora 10 (No graphical mode)Windows OS : XP and Windows Server NT...I am able to access from my windows to linux using following step//fedora10 ip username of admin and password...I am able to view the admin and shared printer of fedora 10.When i try to enter in the admin folder i am not able to access it. I've lasted a lot longer than usual before resorting to asking around, but I've finally gone delightfully mad. I've been trying to access shares based on Windows 7 Ultimate with limited user access on said shares. I've managed to get into my XP machine, another mate's Vista machine and various Linux boxes with no issues, but that's only for shares that are accessible by everyone. The moment I try to get into a share that requires user credentials, I get "Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED".If I try to access restricted shares (be it machine or folder) through Nautilus, I will get a user logon prompt, but it fails. Using smbclient results in just as little success, and now I'm munching through O'Reiley's Samba manual from '99, after realising that I need to basically learn Samba in its entirety to have a hope in hell at getting this to work. The trouble is though, every HOWTO and relevant forum post I get my hands on all seem to concentrate more on the server side of things, and usually servering from a linux box, not the other way around as I'm trying to.
The above Windows 7 machine won't even allow me to view its share contents, whereas the XP machine previously will allow me to browse, but won't allow me to access folders with restricted access. I'm pretty sure there aren't any major issues with the way the Windows 7 machine is setup, as it can be accessed with logon from my Xbox, Ubuntu machine, XP and Vista, with only Fedora having problems getting in as it constantly fails logon. What I'm trying to establish is, if Ubuntu can get in, is there something in my Fedora samba config I'm missing that's preventing me access? My thanks in advance to those of you who've been able to put up with me rambling.

I am trying to set up printing on my Fedora 14 laptop, on my home network.
Details:
- Home network, single subnet, the desktops are connected to the switch portion of my Linksys via Ethernet and all have static addresses. Name resolution between them is via hosts file entries. The router is running wireless (WPA2/AES/DHCP) to accommodate my laptop which is dual boot XP Pro and Linux Fedora 14.
- The printer is an HP Deskjet F4180 printer. It is attached via USB to a Windows XP Pro box and shared. The XP box is wired and static ip.
- I am able to see all the shares and print to the shared printer from any of the Windows boxes, wired and wireless, including my laptop when I run Windows on it.
- My Fedora 14 is working fine on wireless, using Network Manager and KDE desktop. I am able to access all the Windows shares on both of my wired desktops. One desktop is XP Pro, the other is Windows 7.
This is what happens when I try to set up printing on Fedora:
- I go to Administration / Printing and click to Add a Printer.
- I am prompted for the root password twice, which I put in.
- I select Network Printer / Windows printer via samba and click on Browse...
- It finds my WORKGROOUP and machine name mig29 and prompts for user ID and password which I type in.

the user ID and logon on Fedora is different from the one on Windows. During setup I am prompted for credentials. It seems to me that somewhere down the line Fedora supplies not the credentials I supply but my local user ID and password and it obviously fails.

I am just struck in a situation of sharing internet connection with windows xp and fedora. the scenario is i'm connected to internet via wireless card in winxp system, i connected fedora and winxp through ethernet cards via cross over cable.
Now i shared the wireless connection in winxp by checking "allows other user to share this internet connection."
I have given ethernet adapter in windows xp an ip address"192.168.0.1/24"
I have given manually an ip address "192.168.0.2/24 with gateway 192.168.0.1" in fedora computer .
I have run the network setup wizard in winxp and name the workgroup as Mygroup then changed the smb.conf file as follows:
The probelm now is i can't able to get internet access in fedora i can able to ping fedora ip address from win xp. but in my network places ->workgroup computers there is nothing .

I recently bought a new Netgear WNDR3300 Wireless-N router, and cannot seem to see the linux box in my windows network. (We have multiple Windows machines on my network, all in the same workgroup.) I also recently bought Avast anti-virus, and I think I have enabled the IP range of all computers to enable communication. I wonder if a media router has different needs than just the regular router I used to use. My samba file is minimal, I will post an example. I wish my Windows computer to access a drive marked /terminal on my linux box. I have a drive on my Windows marked E:Cher on my Vista box. My workgroup name is BRCR.

I am setting up my network , I have onlinux box and 2 windows, Thee linux box can see both win boxes, but the win boxes cant see the linux box. I have samba alowed in the firewall, and firewalls turned off in the win boxes, all at set up to be on the same group, What am I missing?

Excuse the length but this issue will take a little explaining. I need to connect my fedora11 box to a windows XP (sp3) laptop. Both are on a lan, with the fedora box at 192.168.0.100 and the laptop at 192.168.0.102. The laptop has openssh server by way of cygwin. Both machines have account jimm with the same password. I can ssh (putty) from the laptop to fedora but can't go the other way. When I ssh from fedora to windows I get a login and password request which results in "Permission denied, please try again." . I know the password is correct as I login to the laptop with it. I have also tried using the windows rdp by turning remote access on in windows and then using any of a variety of desktop viewers to connect. This always results in a version of "Autoselected keyboard map en-us ERROR: 192.168.0.102: unable to connect ". I have turned off firewalls in both machines for these tests and made sure that the local router is completely open to lan traffic. I've checked the forums and not gotten any ideas on how to fix this. I seem to remember (from way back when) that there was an issue connecting when windows switched from plain text passwords to encrypted. The ssh password rejection is what got me thinking about this. By the way, I forgot to mention that I can mount a samba share of the windows drive on the fedora box.

So everything seams to be fine on my F10 boxes networking. I can ping computers on the network with both LAN IP addresses, and their hostnames. However, I can only access my F10 box with a LAN IP. In windows, I go to view workgroup computers... only the windows systems. If I go to the F10 system with samba via the IP address it works fine, just can't get to it with a hostname.
I'm wanting a static IP of 192.168.1.22. And on the windows workgroup "workgroup".
I'm new to doing things with linux that are remotely difficult... and well, this has proven to be. I can't work out if this is a SMB problem, general networking...
smb.conf (I've ommited the top info segment due to forum character limit, as well as the SELINUX notes)

Usually you put external mounts in the /mnt folder, then link there with a symbolic link if you want access from somewhere else. By keeping all of your mounts in /mnt its easier to manage them as your system and ability grow.
You need to make mounts as root. Mounts take the data in the target and put it on top of an existing folder. When you mount something on top of a folder whatever was there becomes invisible until you remove the mount on top of it. If there is a problem with a mount and it does not work, any writes to the mount will go to the folder underneath, and any data you expect to read from there will not exist.
In making a mount you should realize that the char requires an escape char in bash to show up in the final output to the command. The escape char is also . Therefore to show \ in a Windows command, you need to type \\. Also, spaces must be escaped once with .
Howto:
You should substitute your ip or name for 10.10.9.5
Reminders: Make sure your Windows folder is shared read/write if you need to write to it.
You probably want to change permissions on /mnt/WindowsDocuments to 777
Tips:If you want a link from your desktop to your Windows "My Documents" folder you can now do this:
$cd ~/Desktop ln -s /mnt/WindowsDocuments WindowsDocs
This will make a symbolic link to /mnt/Windows, and if you execute: ls -l ~/Desktop you should see the links information in the response
Finally, if you want to keep a local backup of what's on the windows box in a local folder you could do:
The ~ char is shorthand for /home/<uername> and represents your home folder.
The result of the rsync command is to make a copy of WindowsDocs (which points to your mount at /mnt/WindowsDocuments which is linked to your Windows machine shared 'My Documents' folder) and put it into ~/WindowsDocumentsBackup
As always, make use of the man command if you get confused or the info command for more detail. ie man rsync

I am a new convert to Fedora with very little knowledge of Linux in general. I have managed to install Fedora 11 on my Advent 8315 laptop and I have wireless connection via my Belkin Wireless N modem router. I have always been able to setup Windows networking successfully but Fedora is much more complex, using terminology that I am not familiar with. What I need to do to achieve networking with my Windows computer? I especially want to network to my Canon printer which is connected to the Windows PC.

I have a windows machine on my lan with a printer attached. I have samba running on my F11 laptop and I can use it to access shared files on the windows machine. But how can I use the printer from fedora? When I go to Administor>Printers then I just get an empty list, even after pressing 'rescan'. Do I have to change some firewall/samba configuration? If not then where else would I see the printer?

I been a windows guy forever, and wanted to make the switch. Anyways, I am hoping to do a wireless wake-on-lan from a windows box. I have an older laptop that has a dead screen and I am trying to use it as a server. So, I want to be able to VNC the linux box from my vista machine. I think that's going to be straight forward. But, the linux machine doesn't have a builtin wireless card, so I am using a USB wireless deal. If I let the laptop hibernate/sleep after being idle, can I wake from my vista box over my network?

We have 9 windows stations on XP and also Xp on the server to do file sharing. Now the boss wants a domain environment and has asked me to look at Fedora So what we want is filesharing, like word .xls ,pdf docs etc Also we want to restrict what the user workstations can do.We want to their profiles on the server, so when they login in all profile information like the desktop, my documents loads.If one PC for some reason gives in ,they can login on another and continue working.

What could block access from Fedora to just one Windows XP system without blocking access to or from other Windows systems on the network? I have a working Windows network with six computers and one network-attached-storage. Two of the computers (MARTIN and NANCY) are Windows XP, the rest are older. I set up a Fedora laptop with Samba. The Fedora system can access the Internet (I'm using it to post this message). It can see all the Windows systems, and it can open all of them except MARTIN. The firewall on MARTIN is turned off.
I go to Places, Network, and I see nine icons: the Fedora system, seven Windows systems and one for Windows Network. If I double-click on the MARTIN icon I get a message window that says "Unable to mount location" and "Failed to retrieve share list from server". If I double-click on any of the other Windows icons, including NANCY, a new window opens showing the shares on that system. Similar results with smbclient. It shows the shares for all systems except MARTIN. For MARTIN it says "Connection to MARTIN failed (Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL)."
The other Windows computers on the network can open the shares on MARTIN with no problem. The network is partly wired and partly wireless. The wireless network is secured with WEP. The Fedora laptop is (as you might expect) wireless. The Fedora laptop is an emachines E520 and both Windows XP machines are custom-built tower systems. I don't think that information is relevant but I mention it anyway. What should I look for?

I can browse, add and delete files on my fc13-64 machine from windows xp or vista. But not from the fc13-64 machine to or from any of the windows machines. I have installed samba, smb and nmb are running (reliably) selinux is disabled and the firewall is on; although i have noticed with it off I can't browse in either direction. Can't browse windows with samba but can browse samba with windows, is a problem I overcame with fc-12 but I can't remember how.

I am trying to share my printer with a windows xp machine.Samber server and configuration tool is installed. Still I have no clue how to get this to work. The printer is setup and working on my Fedora desktop.as anyone done this before and can give a step by step description on how to setup a Linux printer on a network (home-network) with windows.I already searched for it but non of the tutorial were clear enough or missing something.

I want shared folders and files between my desktop (Windows 7) and my notebook (Fedora 12). I installed with YUM the server SAMBA and configured all according this tutorial (http://www.ubuntu-es.org/?q=node/130156)
also configured the firewall with Firestarter, allow all entries for the HOST.
The problem is that in windows I can not enter to notebook or by network interface or by ip address. and viceversa.There is another option for sharing files, or what I do?

I recently switched my mom from Windows to Fedora , and ever since her Internet speed went down. Now it takes, on average, 6-8 seconds longer for her to load a web page with Firefox. Tried to replace the modem -- didn't help. She is on a DSL connection.
But here is the striking part. Her BitTorrent speeds are better than mine, and I have a cable rather than DSL.
I can't for life imagine how these two can coexist. An innocent web page takes forever to load, and torrents are so fast. By the way, she does say that torrents used to be *even* faster on Windows.
