Fedora Networking :: Replace Windows Xp Server
Jan 8, 2010
We have 9 windows stations on XP and also Xp on the server to do file sharing. Now the boss wants a domain environment and has asked me to look at Fedora So what we want is filesharing, like word .xls ,pdf docs etc Also we want to restrict what the user workstations can do.We want to their profiles on the server, so when they login in all profile information like the desktop, my documents loads. If one PC for some reason gives in ,they can login on another and continue working.

At home I am using a Windows Server 2003 as Domain controller with Active Directory. My "client" computers are all currently running Windows XP. They all require CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and the user to enter their credentials before they will allow logon.
Shared files reside on various other Server 2003 machines and have restrictions on so only specific users can access certain resources.
For example, I have the family finances and other important documents in a share named 'Private-Files', only members of the 'PrivateFiles' global group have access. Likewise, I have my movies sorted into their appropriate age categories - after all, I don't want my 5 year old son accidentally watching Aliens!
So this all works but as you can imagine, the copies of Windows XP and Server 2003 are far from legitimate. I want to go legal and the only real way I can afford to do this is to switch over to Linux.
I have used Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora and a few other distros in the past and found that for ease of use, I want to use Ubuntu on the desktop computers but power the servers with some flavour of Linux.
The problem is, although I can install the OSes, I have no idea where to proceed from there - for example, how do I create a Domain in Suse? Where and how do I create domain users and groups? How do I set permissions on shares for the domain users?

We have a couple of Windows file servers that just share files. It is all they do. We'd like to use Ubuntu on two replacement servers allowing Windows XP and Windows 7 clients to access the files. Our network is active directory based due to Exchange and homegrown .NET apps, so it is important that active directory is used to authenticate the clients. Samba doesn't need to be a pdc or bdc, but provide pass through authentication.I understand that Samba can communicate with active directory through security-ads and security-domain.
Here are my questions to see if I should proceed:1) Folder permissions:If we move all our files to the Ubuntu server how do we set folder permissions and will we see the active directory accounts when we do this?2) Skipping ubuntu accounts: I know the domain and ads allow you to skip creating ubuntu accounts, right? If not, how do you keep the passwords synchronized?3) Easiest way? Is there a very easy way to pull this off that I've missed? My goal is to eliminate the Windows based file servers while ensuring the admin part of it is as easy as possible. To date I've been able to get the sharing to work with an ubuntu account mirroring the active directory account. I've been able to get Samba to talk to the pdc, but not successfully through domain security. ADS security was a complete cluster with winbindd

First of all I am new user on fedora forum and I love Linux (special Redhat flavours) and want to replace windows into Linux Everywhere. I am having some issue in configuring PDC on Fedora,I want to replace my company Windows Domain controller and file server into fedora file and PDC, I tried from web and through 389-directory server but didn't succeed even once, how to configure PDC with Samba 4 + 389-directory Server, I have heard samba 4 is having awesome support and its better then windows DC, configuring Complete PDC. (Whatever need to configure PDC i.e. DNS, SAMBA 4, SWAT, WEBMIN, 389-Directory Server, Windows sync,).

I recently replaced a failed graphics card w/ a GT 240. Next thing I know, Fedora 11 won't boot up properly. I guess it was a driver issue. I can tell you I went about fixing it all wrong because I wiped the FC11 partition (intending to install FC13) and now I can't boot anything up. My system consists of: sda1 vista, sdb1 XP, sdb5 extended, sdb6 Fedora. I thought grub was on the fedora partition, but reinstalling fedora with grub on that partition didn't fix the boot up problem. Do I need to replace the windows boot loader on sda1 with grub when installing fedora?

We have 6 Dell r610 running CentOS 5.4 with stock kernels, with a couple of Broadcom NetExtreme II 5706c 1GB NICs in them. The NICs are flaking under load, and we'd like to try some alternative NICs (in additional to playing around with driver and firmware upgrades to see if the Netextreme II's can be made stable). Assuming we do not want to do bonding or TOE and just want basic solid transport, can anyone recommend a server NIC that is rock solid with CentOS 5.4? The goal is stable as source-able, we just want to get some baseline functionality up and running while we fight the broadcom issues.

I use F10 at home and while away from work on my laptop. Recently I could get the VPN sorted out ( I can now connect to the vpn (ppp0) server at work from home or anywhere else). I am trying to mount a windows folder that is on the work server on my F10 box at home through the VPN connection that is first established. What I know about the windws server
servername
sharename
username
password
When I try this
sudo mount -t cifs //pxxxx/home/abcd /mnt/dir/ -o username=abcd,password=xxxx
I get this error
mount error: could not resolve address for pxxxx: Name or service not known
No ip address specified and hostname not found
I think the VPN connection is established successfully. I have a ppp0 connection under ifconfig with an IP address after vpn connection is established. In windows I just map the network drive (\pxxxxhome) username=abcd, password=xxxx and mount the folder as "abcd on pxxxxhome"

getting a reverse proxy to work. I have it working fine on my windows box with at32 Reverse Proxy. It was very easy to setup. Anyway I'm wanting to replace that windows box with a Linux box. Here is some background on what I'm trying to get done in Linux.
I have
[url].....
All pointing with a CNAME to my dyndns.org address. I have a dynamic IP from my ISP so I need this and its currently working just fine.my ISP blocks port 80 so I have to use port 443. Port 443 seems to be the most reliable port to use since its one of the ports my ISP does not block and its one of the ports other places like hotels dont block. So I want to access my bittorrent server. I type in http:[url]....443 and the at32 Reverse Proxy points it to my internal server http://bittorrent on port 80.
I got this to work perfect in windows. So right now I'm doing this all in a virtual machine for testing. I have Apache all setup and working with the reverse proxy except for my thermostat's web server. Here is how I have it setup in the virtual machine. The machine is called testbox and its running Ubuntu Alt 10.04 32bit .In that VM I can go to http: // testbox but it will only display the HTML code of the page.If I go directly to the main page on the thermostat http://testbox/index.shtml the web page renders just fine and all the links work.My sites-available config file has this inside.
<VirtualHost testbox:80>
ProxyPass / http://192.168.0.205/
ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.0.205/
</VirtualHost>
The config file is for port 80 but I think once I get things working in the testbox I should not have any problems switching it to port 443.

I'm running Fedora 14 and when I'm surfing the web, it seems to lag in between pages. I don't think its my net connection, I just wiped windows 7 off my system for Fedora and it did not suffer from the same lag issues.I've tried adding in google's alternate dns server 8.8.8.8 but it didn't seem to fix the issue. I ran into this issue a couple years back on Ubuntu 8.1 or something like that, and I never could find out what I needed to configure. My second problem is that when I try to connect to other Windows systems on my wlan or wired connection, it gives the error "failed to retrieve share list from server". I'm not experienced in networking, can someone explain this to me?

My Pug Server has worked faithfully for many years just sitting in a closet. It is designed wo that you never need to add a monitor or keyboard as it is administered through a web interface. Recently it had a problem with the motherboard and I had to replace it, but the machine is now working. However, it no longer is visible as a network drive on my Windows machine.Unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking to see what the problem is. I did attach a keyboard and monitor and logged on, but everything looks okay (I can see my files, etc.).
This is an old machine (c. 2003), so has an old version of Linux (I have no idea what version, or even how to find out). Since it is never meant to be used directly it doesn't have any GUI installed, so I have to do everything using command line.Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can even start to determine what the problem is or how I can go about trying to fix it? At this point I would be happy just to get the files out and replace it with a newer NAS.

A while ago I messed up my Ubuntu installation so I decided to boot the install from the disc again and overwrite it. It turns out the installation disc does not give you the option to replace a current Ubuntu installation so I was forced to take more space out of my windows [vista] installation. This means I now have 1 ruined Lucid Ubuntu OS, 1 Working Lucid Ubuntu OS and a windows Vista OS system. Is it safe to delete my ruined Ubuntu from inside vista? Is it possible to overwrite my Ubuntu installations? How can I delete them both and then install Lucid again?
I want to know this now as Maverick Meerkat will be released on Sunday and I want to install that in a clean installation without deleting my vista installation. I do not have the Vista installation disc because Vista came pre-installed. I am not willing to buy anything.

I am trying to get a Linux (Slackware 13.37) working in a Windows networking environment. The IT support for this organisation does not extend to Linux support, so I'm limited in what help I can get for this.
I'm trying to get to the point where I can get to the internet to download what I need on this Linux machine.
The situation is this (*fictitious addresses used) -My Linux machine uses a fixed IP address (10.100.150.21)
My Windows machine uses a DHCP assigned IP address (10.100.150.213)Both Linux and Windows machine are configured to access the gateway server (10.100.150.1)So, I can ping the Linux machine from the Windows machine and vice-versa.I can ping the gateway machine from the Windows machine.I can browse Windows Shares on the network via SMB from the Linux machine.I CANNOT ping the gateway machine from the Linux machine with the Destination Host Unreachable message being the error message.
For actual internet access I need to access a proxy server but since the Linux machine can't even ping the gateway server, it fails to ping the proxy. Now, I have been told the gateway is a HW based router and for Windows machine they use some software for authentication to connect to the network. This software isn't available for Linux, so that's why I've been told to use a fixed IP address. My experience of networking is pretty basic and most of the Linux setup is done via running Slackware's setup program.
