I used to have a working vlc. Then I added debian-multimedia to my sources.list and installed several other movie players (kplayer, kaffeine,). As a result, my vlc no longer works: When I run it to display a movie (any movie, I tried several) I get the sound OK, but there is no image, and the window stays small (like when playing a sound file). How do I get vlc to display movies again?

Right now I have the net book set up so I can watch movies from my Ubuntu desk top (using XBMC) on my home network. What I would like to do is when I am on the road with my netbook, be able to watch my shows and movies on my PC at home. I am not sure if there is a VNC client that would work on both systems or not.

Now, seen that it is possible for popcorn time to stream to my TV, how can I do it myself e.g. in the case of a video file or some pictures which are on my PC?
I'm running Jessie on an AMD64 with an ATI Radeon HD 7770 card. I have installed the fglrx driver. When I try to play a movie with vlc, it crashes with the following error:

I want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.
I'm using Debian Squeeze with Fluxbox and I'm having a problem with xscreensaver. I've set to blank screen after 10 minutos of inactivity, but the problem is that when I'm watching a movie, the screen is blanked after 10 minutes too. So I have to manually kill xscreensaver before starting to see a movie, or I have to move my mouse / press keyboard every 10 minutes to activate the screen again.
I've done some search before posting and I only found something about a SMPlayer's option named "Disable screensaver", but it is already on and it has no effect preventing xscreensaver to work. Here is a screen shoot of my SMPlayer configuration window:

Apparently, xscreensaver isn't being able to recognize that another program is running. Could it be related to dbus?
PS: I had a dbus problem when I first upgraded to squeeze, my multimedia keys stoped working in banshee (whenever I clicked to play/pause/next etc, another banshee process was started), but I solved it by adding this line to my ~/.xinitrc: eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
i have a little problem i use ubuntu on my htpc, which is connected to a LG Plasma 42 the playback from smplayer is ok, but after some minutes, let's say, 30 the TV goes to black and shows "no image detected", then i have to move the mouse in order to recover the image imagine that in the middle of a movie (a great movie, like THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS) what can i do?

I've seen many bootsplash projects..but most of them are broken. I tried splashy (which is available on the repo), but by the time it loads, my system is already booted, so I don't really like it. note that I don't have any Xorg server installed.
I have just installed a GeForce 8400 GS card in my Ubuntu 10.10 with the Nvidia proprietary driver( version number: 260.19.21).
The Display is connected to the desktop through an HDMI cable and the resolution is 1920 x 1080 .
After some trouble(Black Screens), almost everything is ok.
The only problem is the screen that is extrapolating the Display Boundaries.
I have tried to set it through the nvidia configuration program without success.
Is there any parameter in Xorg.conf that could resolve this issue?
I want to report a bug I recently found to devs.
I found that when switching to any TTY and then back to the graphic mode a rectangle of about 5cm long x 1 and 1/2cm tall appears in the right-down corner of the screen, filled with trashed vram data.
I did a screen capture but the thing didn't appear - opposed as ghost would! xDD But the fact is I can see it, no matter I go full screen and then back to normal, no matter I switch again to any TTY and then back to TTY7, it sit's there until I reboot: closing the session and starting a new one don't work either, the box is still there.
I'm running Koala 9.10 amd64 on a QuadCore 8400 and ATI 5750HD video card with drivers provided by Ubuntu itself, not the ones that came with the graphic card CD neither the ones available to download from ATI's website.
I'm running Emerald and Compiz, too.
I have just exported 3 png files out of gimp for a html document I'm working on right now, and they are all almost the same, except I need each to load when the user does something. So the first image will display on the page, and when a user puts their cursor over it, then it will load image 2. When they press it, it loads image 3.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.4 lucid, i just reinstalled the Grub2 after my windows erased it, and now it boots into grub2 but i can only boot into my windows7 loader, ubuntu is not even listed as an option for me to boot into its just a bow with the win7 loader. How can i get the grub2 to load ubuntu back again? i followed the guide on this site to reinstall the Grub2 and set up the dual boot. View 8 Replies View RelatedEverything went fine but whenever I rebooted, Ubuntu 10.10 was not an option in the boot list. However, Windows shows up and boots just fine. I am currently tri booting (not sure if that's the correct term) Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10, and OpenSuse each on a hard drive of their own. In the dolphin file manager I can still see all the files for Ubuntu so I know it was not partitioned over or deleted.
View 7 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 fresh install on eee 900. I had previously tried Cairo-Dock and AWN (successfully but I like that DockbarX is integrated into the panel) I installed Dockbarx like so:

DockbarX was working.
Then I uninstalled Cairo and AWN with Synaptic.I got a notification of an error in the panel saying I had broken packages - see broken package filter to check it out.I can't find filters in Synaptic.Then I noticed DockbarX was empty (and I had pinned Firefox to it) So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling via terminal. No problems with that but when added it to the panel again it was still empty . I rebooted several times during these attempts.

I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?

I have always used it for a server so I never realized this was still an issue until I got my new PC today and went to load Debian / Gnome on it. It showed I was disconnected however I was able to browse the web fine. It appears that so many people have complained about this problem andI am trying to understand if there is a work around and a fix in the near future

A few weeks ago I created a cronjob which randomly changed my desktop wallpaper every two minutes. Here is that cronjob:

Today, however, this cronjob stopped working. (The random_wallpaper script still works as intended.) The only changes I made to my system were
1) I modified my compton configuration settings; and
2) I installed a new display manager, SLiM.
I'm not sure why any of these changes would prevent my cronjob from running though.
I'm running a Debian squeeze system on AMD64, and with recent aptitude safe-upgrade the automounting of gnome/nautilus broke. Now if you click on a usbdrive it give this error: "Unable to mount 'volumelabel' Not Authorized".Previous it automatically mounted it, making/removing mount points as needed in /media, or you could mount by clicking on the drive icon in nautilus. (It varied a bit with package updates, but i didn't worry too much)Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong? I'm lost where to start, and systems nautilus or gnome-volume-manager use to mount things.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI decided to install the Ubuntu Netbook remix (9.10, I believe) on this extra IDE hard drive I had (my other three hard drives are SATA.) My primary hard drive contains a Windows XP, my second contains Windows 7, and my third SATA drive is just NTFS-formatted storage. I went through the installer and choose to format and install on my 40GB IDE hard drive, which it did. Then it finished and rebooted. It apparently decided to install the GRUB bootloader onto the primary hard drive (not the one it was installed on,) which was not my intention. The bootloader froze the boot of my computer and wouldn't work. (Stuck at loading GRUB.) I couldn't even get to the BIOS. So I pulled the plug on the primary hard drive and tried to boot again. I could get into Windows 7 just fine, but that was it. The problem, though, is that the CD drive (also SATA) no longer shows up in My Computer. Also, after changing the boot order and replugging in the former primary hard drive, it wouldn't show up, either. Nor would the IDE one (though I'm pretty sure that's because Windows doesn't understand the EXT (or whatever Ubuntu uses) file system.
Does anyone know why this occurred and how to get those drives to show up in Windows again? I don't really care to get the netbook remix working here, since this isn't even a laptop, it was just an experiment. Also, I'd love to know how to remove GRUB from my primary hard disk so that I can boot from it again.

View 2 Replies View Relatedboot up in to chameleon, lists only Mac OS X as a boot option. Reboot, load Ubuntu 10.4 install cd, get to a terminal, mount /dev/sda3 /mnt grub-install --force --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda3
reboot, let chameleon come up, it sees both Mac OS X & Ubuntu partitions and I can boot to either or happily, now here is the problem... If I select linux and boot in to linux from chameleon, i am brought to the grub menu, where i can select the first choice which is normal ubuntu 10.4 and every thing is great... until I reboot and my linux partition no longer shows up in chameleon, as if tthe act of booting in to grub is changing something / deleting itself from the partition? and I have to do the whole thing over again. SO, not having to even go in to OS X, I'm not sure thats really the concerns more as I'm doing something wrong with grub.
Transmission used to show space remaining on the drive you choose in the add window. Now it doesn't. Was this removed? I LOVED that convenience of not having to go to a separate file browser or terminal to show space. I tried posting at Transmissions forums but it's been 4 days with only 7 views and no reason to bump b/c the forum is so slow I'm still on the front page.

that I could run (twice in a row, it needed) to allow the scroling of the screen to see the bottom 1/4.
This no longer works.
In squeeze, Kazehakase just displays a blank page, regardless of how I open it (from file manager, from terminal, from mail client or from menu and bookmark.) This problem occurs with version 0.5.8-3 (i386) and goes away with a forced downgrade to 0.5.8-2. If I open it from a terminal, the program open to a blank page, and there's no output in the terminal. Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have suggestions on what to look for to maybe fix this? I don't see any matching bug reports, but I'm prepared to make one.

Enter the command: "xrandr -d :0.0 -q"
You should be rewarded with information about your current screen.

Testing an upgrade Etch>Lenny 5.08, and one issue I've found is that "sudo konqueror" in a teminal no longer gives root priveleges, instead konqueror starts with limited rights. It also seems that using a .desktop shortcut, an attempt to run konqueror under any credentials other than the logged-on user fails.
Yet, 'sudo kwrite' works. Anyone met this before, or know why?
MPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.
When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference
I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.
I was just wondering why my Dual-core Processor shows basically a mirror image where CPU core loads cross. On something like a file transfer, shouldn't they both be at the same level?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn a galactic scale, I have a very, very minuscule problem, but it is irksome nonetheless. I have a machine running Fedora 12. I have two monitors attached--both 19" flat panels at 1280 x 1024 each. At some point I created a desktop background image that was 2560 x 1024. I guess I'm sort of used to Mac OS X where one can set separate images on each screen (so I'm used to having a right image and a left image).
Anyway, I set the image as my desktop background, and it spanned both screens as expected. I can't tell you for the life of me what setting I had it on (scaled, tiled, etc.). But for some reason, after running a set of updates, my image no longer spans both screens. Instead it is cropped from 2560 x 1024 to 1280 x 1024 and appears the same on BOTH screens. I've tried all five settings in the "Appearance" panel (gnome-appearance-properties). "Scaled" has the image shrunk down to 1280 x 512, and appears on both screens, with bars above and below it.
"Tiled," "Zoom," and "Centered" all have the image as explained earlier--cropped to 1280 x 1024 and appearing the same on both screens."Fill Screen" smushes the image so that it is half as wide but every bit as tall, and displays that on both monitors. Again, I realize this is silly to be considered a "problem," but it USED to appear normally and now I can't get it to anymore. Anyone else experience this or know what the deal is?
