Fedora :: Nautilus Sorts By Size (Default Settings)

Jun 24, 2011

I have set Nautilus to sort files by type, but for some reason it always, by default, arranges files by size, meaning I have to actually click the "type" column every time I open a new folder. How do I make it sort stuff by type like it's supposed to?

Fedora :: Increase Default Large Text Size In Universal Access Settings?

May 28, 2011

I installed Fedora 15/Gnome 3 because I liked the Universal Access Settings widget for controlling the appearance of my living room computer attached to my TV. It should (when it becomes more stable) make it easy to zoom in on the screen when I'm on the couch. There is also a Large Text setting that allows me to toggle between normal text size and perhaps 125% text size.

I'd like to set that value to about 200%, but don't see how to do it. dconf-editor didn't seem to have a way. gnome-tweak-tool has a way to make all fonts bigger or smaller but I want to easily switch between normal text size when I'm sitting close and large text from the UAS. Screwing around with gnome-tweak-tool would require me to be up-close. It looks like UAS is controlled by /usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/uap.ui, but it is a wickedly complex xml file & I don't know what to edit. Is there a per user way to change the behavior?

Ubuntu :: Lost Default Icon Size In Nautilus?

May 28, 2011

some reason I lost my default icon sizes in Nautilus. This only appears to affect any graphic files like .jpg, .png, etc. that I keep in my "Pictures" folder. I also have this issue with video files that I keep in my "Video" folder.Currently I am running Ubuntu Natty and using the Ambiance theme that is customized with Faenznt icons. Nautilus is customized with Nautilus Elementary. Changing themes has no effect. The folders all appear normal and other icon file types appear normal, it's just my graphic d video files that are appearing small.Running dconf editor shows my icon setting is set to normal. I am enclosing a pic so you can see the folders display at a normal size, but the graphic files do not.

Fedora :: Installation Script - Default Configuration Or Customize Settings?

Feb 17, 2011

I was fed up installing Fedora on many of my friend's laptop and doing the same and same thing again. So I've made a Fedora post installation script which does all I want to. Currently the script can:

Add user to sudoers
Configure yum to keep package cache
Fix a problem with Revisor
Add additional repos
Install multimedia codecs
Install flash(32-bit only)
Install wine with gecko,
Install GTalk plugin
Add colors to bash prompt
Add fortune messages to bash prompt
Set SELinux in permissive mode
Install additional softwares

By default, when you run the script, it will ask if you want to accept default configuration or use customize the changes. You can also run ./fedora-firstrun.sh -y to run the script with default configuration. To add yourself to sudoers, run the script as normal user. If you are not in sudoers list, the script will ask you to add to sudoers.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus And System Monitor Cannot See New LV Size

Aug 29, 2010

I was getting low disk space notifications so I used LVM to increase Ubuntu's volume from 10GB to 50GB. LVM and Disk Utility show the correct new size, but System Monitor and the Properties of the File System (in Nautilus) show the old, smaller size. Do I need to update something to get them to see the new size?

I had this behaviour already with the previous relase of Ubuntu, and upgrading to 10.04 did not solve the problem.

Software :: Ubuntu 11.04 - Nautilus Tab Size Stretches For Each Directory

Jul 8, 2011

Just installed Ubuntu 11.04, which has Nautilus 2.32.2.1. When more than one directory is open, the tab for each directory s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s way across the screen, so all tabs added together take up 100% of the width. So with two folders open, each tab is 50% of the screen width! In previous Nautilus versions, each tab was just normal size. Cannot find a Preference to change this, and Googling for any solution brings up someone's previous query of this nature: [URL] and the fact that no one has responded! Is this an option that can be changed? Anyone come across this new "feature" before?

Ubuntu :: Change Icon Size In Nautilus List View?

Just wondering if it's possible to change the size of icons when Nautilus is in List View. I tried playing around with gtk-icon-sizes in the gtkrc file of my theme, but there doesn't seem to be a setting for it there. I could just zoom in/out, but when I have the icons the size I want them to be, the text is too small (see attachment).

Ubuntu :: Editing Nautilus Settings Returning Defaults

Jun 7, 2010

I finally have a working nautilus after weeks experiencing a seg fault caused by a dependency problem which I have only now managed to resolve.

It came right after doing this:

Code:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/nautilus

I then removed nautilus-elementary ppa and downgraded the nautilus-data.

Problem is the nautilus I get is extremely minimal -- really just a window -- which insists on opening new windows whenever I click on a folder.

[URL]

I've tried removing .nautilus on several occasions.

What are the default settings?

Is there a more convenient way of editing nautilus?

Striks me this has something to do with settings gconf. I'm going to play around and see if any of them fix this creature.

Server :: Advanced LVM - Creating Hybrid Drive Of Sorts

May 8, 2009

This is sort of mixed between hardware and software but it seemed more appropriate to me here. I'm building a server for very fast disk access. We have 8x32GB SSD SATA drives and 4x300GB SSD SATA MFT drives. The 300GB SSD drives are the slow kind of flash that writes slowly, and strangely is limited to 10K writes per sector. Long term data integrity isn't a big deal because it is backed up continuously but fast access to data is desired. Additionally the filesystem that contains this data deletes about 2.5 - 4 gigs of data per day, and adds about 2.5-4 gigs of data per day.

My plan is to create a hybrid drive of sorts, where the smaller 32G drives, lined up in RAID0, create a fast "buffer" disk, and on some increment what is in the buffer is written in bulk to the slower writing 300GB SSDs. I had two thoughts on how to achieve this, but ultimately I think that LVM snapshots are the best way to achieve this, put the read only "snapshot" on the big SSD drive and the other "differencing" part of the snapshot on the faster raid0. I'd much prefer a simpler solution where there is one block device to mount and all this is handled in the background.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Photo Organizer That Sorts By Folder Like Picasa Does

Oct 5, 2010

Anyone aware of a photo-organizer that sorts by folder like picasa does it? Like when you have all your different albums already neatly sorted into different folders Picasa just lists each folder as a separate album, regardless of date and other information. It didn't work in f-spot when I last tried (couple of month ago) and I haven't tried it shotwell and gthumb yet because it isn't mentioned anywhere under their respective features. Also I'm hesitating to download and install both these apps because I have a lot of pictures which take a while to import.
