Fedora :: NBM Service Status Running / Exited
Jun 11, 2011
What is the proper way to make the smb and nmb services start (and keep running) automatically? I have successfully configured samba on my F15 box, but sometimes the other boxes cant see it. I check the status of smb and nmb and smb is running and active, but nmb status is "Running (exited)". If I manually restart nmb then nmb status changes to "Running (active)" and the problem goes away. However I want it to start (and keep running) automatically as it should. I am thinking maybe the problem is the way I set smb and nmb to start automatically.
I used
$chkconfig smb on
and
$chkconfig nmb on
Is this the correct way? if not, what is it? Maybe I need to be more specific about at which runlevels I want the services to start? I have googled, but found about 5 diferent methods to make this services start automatically, some with systemctrl, some editing files, chkconfig, and even the system-config-services app (which seems broken in f15 btw) and don't know which one to use.

I have six linux Centos 5.0 Servers. I had to configure the snmp client. I just created a pretty basic configuration snmpd.conf file
Code: rocommunity CompanyCom 10.1.1.10
I installed all of these
lm_sensors-2.10.7-4.el5.i386.rpm
net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-7.el5.i386.rpm
net-snmp-5.3.2.2-7.el5.i386.rpm
net-snmp-utils-5.3.2.2-7.el5.i386.rpm
4 of them are working fine, the application installed on 10.1.1.10 can query 4 servers but I got 2 Linux Centos that are in a DMZ, and my networking team already opened ports and configured NAT but the SNMP Server 10.1.1.10 is not able to query them how can I check the snmpd is really running apart from service snmpd status? might be related with the DMZ configuration?

I have a transparent proxy Squid-3.0 on Slackware 12.2. I used cron to restart squid every day at 7:30 AM (just /path.to.squid/squid -k kill && /path.to.squid/squid) Some days ago I saw in /var/log/messages that Squid was killed but haven't started. I started it manually and everything was OK. But today everything repeated. And the log file is interesting. I tried to find about it on http://squid-cache.org/ but al in vain. This is from /var/log/messages :
Code:
May 24 07:30:02 konura squid[17188]: Squid Parent: child process 17199 exited due to signal 9
May 24 07:30:02 konura squid[19038]: Squid Parent: child process 19040 started
May 24 07:30:03 konura squid[19038]: Squid Parent: child process 19040 exited with status 1
May 24 07:30:06 konura squid[19038]: Squid Parent: child process 19045 started
[code]....
I need to say that I haven't edited the config file for a long time, but this problem started to happen. ADDED, Solved: I'm not sure, but maybe I found the decision. I deleted about 400 mb of Sarg logs from /var partition. And now squid runs well. Besides, before deleting old logs, 'crontab -e' and 'pkgtool' didn't work And the system wrote me that it's no space left on device. At the same time, 'df -h' showed me that all partitions had enough free space. Seems strange, but that's it. After deleting old proxy statistics, generated by Sarg (this is about 400 mb) 1)squid runs OK and 2)there are no more that annoying messages about abscence of free space.

yesterday i tried to install bt4 from alongside ubuntu 10.04. Unfortunately the DVD had some errors and the installation stopped. Everything was fine till then, even the GRUB was working(i guess!) but when i tried to log into my Ubuntu it gave me an error... " /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with error status 256" also there was a popup like "gnome power management was not properly installed ....blah blah blah Contact you network admin"
i have only one user on that system. i tried the single user mode but no success... i then tried to Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6 no success... can't switch to command line(this is my display problem i guess)
i have now decided to install a fresh install but i do need to take the backup. What all should i copy to the new install so that i get the same feel as before?

My elderly HP Laserjet 4P has worked well for over 15 years. I have it connected to the home network via a Trendnet TE100-P21 Print Server, and setup has always been straightforward and easy. The whole setup has worked quite well with Fedora 9 or 10 thru 14, but then stopped working within the last couple of weeks. I'm assuming an update broke something, as I can find no other reason. When I send a print job or test page, I get a Print Error dialog. The print que shows a "stopped" status for the job. In the Error dialog I use the Diagnose button and step through until I get the Status Messages dialog, which informs me: "The printer's state message is: 'Data file sent successfully'".
Then I enable debugging and send a test page. Stepping through the dialogs it tells me it cannot detect a problem, and gives me an error log, which I've attached. The Trendnet server has a web admin interface. In that interface I can send a test page successfully. Also, I can open a VirtualBox (Windows XP) in Fedora 14, and successfully print from it. My print setup in Fedora is the same as it has been for several years now, and nothing has changed on that end. I have rebooted Fedora and the Trendnet server. All other computers/OS's on the network have no problem printing, only this Fedora 14, and only recently.

I have been away from Linux for years (about 10), I used to use it for everything and anything...now I am about to do it again but I need help getting back into it haha. Screen is broken on newish laptop, going to use it for firewall, router, file server, etc. Trying to setup remote desktop. I got Fedora 14 setup and installed on it, got SSH up and running where I can remote into it easily. Setting up VNC is starting to be a pain though.
I have Windows 7 on my other machine, with TightVNC and tried Tiger VNC also, disabled all firewall, on the same LAN. The service is running on the RH box, I just cant connect to it...am I missing something simple? It just times out. I followed [URL] thread for the most part.

I am using CentOS 5.6 with Apache 2.2.17. The Apache was compiled from source using RPM build to comply with PCI requirements. Also Plesk 9.3 is used as a control panel, but other than the config files the Apache is pretty standard. When the httpd is started, there are no errors reported in /var/log/messages or in the error_log, and the httpd starts, shows up in ps and the pid file exists in /var/run/httpd.pid.
However when you check the status 'service httpd status' you get 'httpd dead but subsys locked'. You can add websites normally, and the proper config files are generated so I am pretty sure this isn't a control panel issue as I have other servers running the same control panel and Apache 2.2.16 compiled and installed the same way as the 2.2.17 and there are no problems.

I am the author of an internet radio for the Raspberry PI originally running on Debian Wheezy. The radio (radiod) service is started and stopped using the usual service commands:
service radiod start|stop|status
Since upgrading to Debian Jessie the service status and stop routines in my radio daemon are no longer called.
For example:
# service radiod status
● radiod.service - LSB: Raspberry PI Radio Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/radiod)
Active: active (running) since Thu 2016-03-31 20:17:07 CEST; 15h ago
Process: 380 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/radiod start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
CGroup: /system.slice/radiod.service
└─603 python /usr/share/radio/ada_radio.py start
If I call my program (which runs as a daemon) I see the status message from my program
# ./radiod.py status
radiod running pid 603
I have established that service stop never calls my program routines to shutdown the radiod daemon when the system is rebooted (I see that from my log files).
The reboot hangs for about 5 minutes whilst stopping the radiod service (because stop never calls my stop routines).
Below is my radiod script, which is fairly conventional, and which has been working all the time until I ported to Debian Jessie.
/etc/init.d/radiod
#!/bin/sh
#
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: radiod
# Should-Start:
# Should-Stop:
[Code] ....

Brand new to Linux. Sort of got thrown in front of the bus if you know what I mean. The company I work for has a Linux server running CentOS 5.4 Company uses Linux for their Email, FTP and Web Server. Have been here a few years dabbling in and out of Linux and now that the old Admin has left the company.....I need to learn it ASAP. The server has run pretty solid until today.
The email server runs SendMail and SpamAssasin. Received lots of complaints today regarding extra SPAM. Noticed that SpamAssassin was not running. Tried to restart it through the WebMin tools and got the following error: Starting spamd: child process [3956] exited or timed out without signaling production of a PID file: exit 255 at /usr/bin/spamd line 2588.

I run a script manually like/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/soffice and when I run
:ps -ef|grep openoffice
I get the following,
root 700 1 0 10:45 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/soffice -calc
My question is how to check whether this script is running or not (It can be checked every 10 minutes) and how to make it as a service. (I don't have root access to put this in rc.local file or somewhere else).

I need a script that is able to check if a service is running or not. It has to do it automatic since it is for restarting a GameServer.
I tried to make one myself, but since the .x86 file has the same name for every server, it is hard to know a way to check if the server is running with the right process.
Is there a way to make a script which is able to check if a service is running (service has same name, but using other ports)
