General :: Slow Boot Up Running F11 - Status Bar Creeps

Apr 4, 2010

I am running Fedora 11 and recently, it has been taking longer and longer to boot up. The Fedora 11 Status bar creeps along ever so slowly till eventually I will receive a login screen. I timed it at about 3 - 5 minutes from turning on the computer till I get a log in prompt.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot Running Extremely Slow?

Aug 12, 2010

I recently attempted to set up my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN FS850) to dual boot Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I set everything up following this tutorial: [URL]

When I try to boot into Ubuntu though, it took me 17 minutes to get to a workable desktop. And once I was there it takes about 3 minutes to open an application like OpenOffice. Everything runs at decent speeds once it is open but that is still ridiculously slow speeds. I was expecting the 15 second boot times that I had heard about.

General :: Ubuntu 8.04 Running Very Very Slow?

Apr 14, 2010

My Toshiba Satellite Pro SP2100 with Ubuntu 8.04 all of a sudden is running very very slow taking ages to boot and is unstable. Some functions will not work at all and when typing the letters appear some time after they are typed. Nothing was downloaded or anything different it was being used just as it has been for more than two years. It has 512 ram. I tried the Mem test and after running for more than 12 hours showed no problems. I did a re-install no better, I tried to load Nimble X but it would not load and it has in the past, tried a Intrepid and it took hours to load but no good.

General :: Slow Running Ubuntu 10.10 Laptop?

Oct 31, 2010

I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs:

Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
512MB Nvidia 8600GT video
Realtek HD audio

What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI.

General :: Windows XP Running As Guest On VirtualBox Is Very Slow

Aug 9, 2011

We had an old Windows XP server running a Filemaker database on a 2.6 GHz Intel CPU, but that server died. It's been replaced by a box with two 2.4 GHz Xeon CPUs and 5 GB of RAM that's running Ubuntu 11.04 natively, and Windows is running as a VirtualBox guest. 2GB of RAM has been dedicated to the Windows guest.Of course, these old Xeon CPUs don't have the VT-x extensions, so I wouldn't expect to be able to add CPUs to the VirtualBox guest, but the Filemaker database is running at least 2-3x slower than it did on the old server. I would expect that utilizing one 2.4GHz CPU out of four available shouldn't result in such an astounding difference.

I would also like to be able to continue using this setup, since it would also mean we'd be able to remove our Linux server from the rack, which is running on even slower hardware (not that the system requirements are high for its job though). So my question is: Why is this so slow? Is there anything I can do to change the situation? Or should I just give up now and find more suitable hardware?I understand that the "new" machine should be about 1% slower in theory, so please don't tell me this "should" be fine. I need more concrete answers (as in, "I've tried this before and you should do X") since in the real world, it appears to be about 50% slower. I'm about to blame "virtual" CPUs to multithreading on single core processors, and possibly the difference in CPU architecture between Xeon and Pentium 4 CPUs.

General :: Running Ubuntu 10.10 And Wireless Internet Was Very Slow?

Jun 2, 2011

I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and my wireless Internet was very slow (~1 minute to load a website, and downloading was excruciating). I dual boot my machine with windows 7, and I have no wireless problems at all when I am running windows. I disabled IPV6 and that did not do anything.I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 hoping that this may fix the problem however my wireless internet is still very slow. When I plug my computer directly to my modem, I have no problems at all.I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what might be making my wireless Internet so slow when I run Ubuntu?

General :: Check The Snmpd Is Really Running Apart From Service Snmpd Status?

Feb 8, 2010

I have six linux Centos 5.0 Servers. I had to configure the snmp client. I just created a pretty basic configuration snmpd.conf file

Code: rocommunity CompanyCom 10.1.1.10

I installed all of these

lm_sensors-2.10.7-4.el5.i386.rpm
net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-7.el5.i386.rpm
net-snmp-5.3.2.2-7.el5.i386.rpm
net-snmp-utils-5.3.2.2-7.el5.i386.rpm

4 of them are working fine, the application installed on 10.1.1.10 can query 4 servers but I got 2 Linux Centos that are in a DMZ, and my networking team already opened ports and configured NAT but the SNMP Server 10.1.1.10 is not able to query them how can I check the snmpd is really running apart from service snmpd status? might be related with the DMZ configuration?

Fedora :: NBM Service Status Running / Exited

Jun 11, 2011

What is the proper way to make the smb and nmb services start (and keep running) automatically? I have successfully configured samba on my F15 box, but sometimes the other boxes cant see it. I check the status of smb and nmb and smb is running and active, but nmb status is "Running (exited)". If I manually restart nmb then nmb status changes to "Running (active)" and the problem goes away. However I want it to start (and keep running) automatically as it should. I am thinking maybe the problem is the way I set smb and nmb to start automatically.

I used
$chkconfig smb on
and
$chkconfig nmb on

Is this the correct way? if not, what is it? Maybe I need to be more specific about at which runlevels I want the services to start? I have googled, but found about 5 diferent methods to make this services start automatically, some with systemctrl, some editing files, chkconfig, and even the system-config-services app (which seems broken in f15 btw) and don't know which one to use.

Fedora :: Printer Queue Shows Stopped Status For Job Running F14

Jun 15, 2011

My elderly HP Laserjet 4P has worked well for over 15 years. I have it connected to the home network via a Trendnet TE100-P21 Print Server, and setup has always been straightforward and easy. The whole setup has worked quite well with Fedora 9 or 10 thru 14, but then stopped working within the last couple of weeks. I'm assuming an update broke something, as I can find no other reason. When I send a print job or test page, I get a Print Error dialog. The print que shows a "stopped" status for the job. In the Error dialog I use the Diagnose button and step through until I get the Status Messages dialog, which informs me: "The printer's state message is: 'Data file sent successfully'".

Then I enable debugging and send a test page. Stepping through the dialogs it tells me it cannot detect a problem, and gives me an error log, which I've attached. The Trendnet server has a web admin interface. In that interface I can send a test page successfully. Also, I can open a VirtualBox (Windows XP) in Fedora 14, and successfully print from it. My print setup in Fedora is the same as it has been for several years now, and nothing has changed on that end. I have rebooted Fedora and the Trendnet server. All other computers/OS's on the network have no problem printing, only this Fedora 14, and only recently.

Ubuntu Servers :: Smbd Not Running - Reinstall It But Still Giving The Erroneous (?) Status Message ?

Feb 3, 2010

Here's the background info -- I recently installed Ubuntu server 8.04 on TWO machines that are exactly identical. On one machine, all seems perfect. On the other, when I execute "/etc/init.d/samba status" it always shows that smbd is NOT running. But it would seem that it IS running, since I can access the shares I've set up without difficulty either from smbclient on the server or from the windows boxes on the network.ps ax lists smbd as a process as well. The log tells me nothing -- it just reports that samba started. No errors. Not much of anything in there. And if I execute smbstatus, that works just like you'd expect.since the two machines are identical (and I mean exactly the same), and only one is doing this.

I guess I should be happy since they both work (seemingly perfectly). But it still bothers me that I'm getting the message that smbd isn't running on one of them. I tried uninstalling samba and reinstalling it on the machine giving me the erroneous (?) status message. But that changed nothing.Right now there's no data on the machine, and it's not in production, so just doing a bare metal reinstall of the OS is an option. But I'd like to understand what's happening.

General :: Slow Down The Kernel Boot Process?

Oct 14, 2010

I'm trying to upgrad from kernel 2.6.32.9 to 2.6.34.3 and I'm having problems. The boot finished with that old gem "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init !"I suspect that it's something to do with my PATA IDE driver because there have been kernel changes in this area.My problem is all the boot messages scroll off the top of the screen before I can read them and it's no use saying look at dmesg or /var/log/messages because the root fs isn't there - another reason why I think it's to do with the drivers. So my question is, is there some way I can slow down the boot process so that I have a chance of reading the messages ?

other things on the computer are also running slow, like opening Firefox, it takes a while for the window to appear.

Ubuntu :: Running A Little Slow - Jerky Even ?

Apr 24, 2010

I'm running 9.1 Karmic Koala UNR and recently (over the last week or two) the system has been running somewhat slowly. The boot is still lightning fast, but opening up programs takes a second or two, it can sometimes take a second or two for menu's to respond to mouse overs.

I've noticed the problems in applications as well. Streaming media over firefox (and I have a 40GB landline, I don't do lag) appears jerky as if skipping a frame or two while sound carries on almost as normal.

Netbeans (I have crash issues at the moment) also runs slowly, alt-tab takes a few seconds longer than every other program.

General Windows are just slow to load (one to three seconds) and menu's take a while to appear (2-3 seconds on mouseover or click)

Usually Ubuntu is lightning fast, I by no means have top of the range laptop...sacrifices have to be made... it's a simple Acer notebook.

Ubuntu :: Running Off A USB Stick; Very Slow?

Now that I'm on Ubuntu, I love the look of it. Navigating the OS menus is fast and programs are generally fast once they're running, but they're extremely slow when first opened (basic programs like Firefox, OpenOffice Writer, etc.). Is this because I'm running Ubuntu off of a USB stick? I don't know if I'd make the full switch if programs typically open this slow, but otherwise I love Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Twitter Status / Update Pidgin Status In Lucid

Jul 5, 2010

I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).

Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).
