General :: Fedora - Boot Direct To Application On Console With No Login?

Apr 19, 2010

I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc.

The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.

Security :: How To Prohibit Direct Root Login (ssh Or Console)

Aug 25, 2010

I added the following lines to /etc/ssh/ssh_config file:

PermitRootLogin no
DenyUsers root
DenyGroups root

And then restarted my sshd as followd:

# /etc/init.d/sshd restart

Then, I exited out of the box and logged back in as root thru ssh.

1- What am I doing wrong?

2- How do I restrict root direct console login?

Fedora :: Looking For A Good Console / Terminal Application?

Fedora 14 xfce
HP Netbook 210

I am looking for a good and practical console application. I use midnight commander a lot, and I find it frustrating every time I press the F10 key it displays the drop menu items using the terminal. On occasions I make invisible the menu bar, by disabling in the view menu.

So I am looking for a good console application that when I use midnight commander if I press the function key buttons it doesn't display the drop down menu options.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 (Tty1) Console Login Prompt At Boot

Nov 20, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my 32gb flash drive. Just one large partition for the OS and about a gig for swap. Worked fine. Booted to USB on two computers and a laptop at home. Fine. Figured I'd try it on a work pc for the sake of testing a random computer. Well I stick the drive in, boot up, select usb from the boot menu and bam Ubuntu starts loading. I look away, it's cool ubuntu's loading. Well I turn back and it's a black screen. It's "<username>@whatever login:" or something close.

I use the username and password I created during installation and what I used to login to the computer like fifty million times while booted into Ubuntu. Well, invalid login. The first time I installed this OS on this drive I updated it through the update manager and rebooted. Next thing I know I type in my username and password, hit enter, and bam black screen, some stuff, then im asked to login again. Now after this next iteration I am faced with yet another faulty login screen. What is up with this OS?

Fedora :: Get The Console From Login Screen?

New clean install of Fedora 12 (my worst Linux experience so far, should have sticked with Fedora 9, it was old but it was stable, unlike this half-backed... whatever it is). Anyway, to the matter at hand (one of the many):How do I switch to the console from the graphical login screen? CTRL+ALT+Fn doesn't work, CTRL+ALT+Backspace doesn't kill X, it's a NIS machine with only root as local account

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cannot Login As Root In The Console (tty2-tty6)

Oct 19, 2010

I has Centos 5.5 with kernel 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5.

centos-release-5-5.el5.centos
Linux centos 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5 #1 SMP Wed Sep 29 12:50:31 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

My problem is this:

I can login as root in to Gnome and ssh but not in the console In fact I can login with anyuser in to Gnome and ssh but not in the console. By the console I'm referring to tty1-tty6. When the login screen is showed I write the user and password but then a message is quickly(I cant see it) showed and erased and the login screen is showed again I looked the file /etc/security/access.conf but all the entries are marked as comments. I also looked the file /etc/securetty and this is the content:

console
vc/1
vc/2
vc/3

[code]....

I even can use "su" with root with no problem. The next entries are written in the /var/log/audit/audit.log file everytime I has this error:

type=USER_AUTH msg=audit(1284441198.687:5305): user pid=21795 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM: authentication acct="root" : exe="/bin/login" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=tty2 res=success)'

General :: Troubleshooting - Cannot Login To Server Via SSH/Console

Apr 5, 2011

I got two computers with the exact same symptoms today: Both seem to be alive. They answer pings and they host virtual machines which are working. However, I cannot login via SSH. I get

$ ssh -v obelix
OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu6, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug1: Reading configuration data /home/mike/.ssh/config
debug1: Applying options for obelix

[code]....

On the console I can switch the ttys and enter my login credentials. After that I see the GNU/Debian Linux welcome message an no prompt. The system seems to hang. I'm able to switch the tty again and login with the same result. (I tried that three times now and I start running out of ttys.) A search on the Internet suggested some ressoucre shortage. How could I release some resoucres than? How could I further investigate the situation before just trying a hard power off?

General :: Undo Login Setting From Console

Dec 26, 2010

I'm brand new to ubuntu and very green when it comes to Linux in general.I have recently installed Ubuntu Desktop version 10.10 for my media pc (a friend of mine showed me xbmc, awesome!). I modified my install so that I don't have to enter a password when turning it on.The problem seems to be that when I did the install I chose to encrypt my home directory. Now, since I don't enter a password, the machine spews a few errors and does nothing. I finally got it to boot to a console window however I don't know how to undo what I did from the gui.I'm basically trying to get to System > Admin > Login Window > Security without the gui and "check the box" to require a password on login.Any clue as to which config file this setting is stored in?

Fedora :: No Gnome Or Console Login After Upgrade FC10 - FC12

Jan 23, 2010

After the Upgrade of my Fedora Insatallation (FC 10 => 12) I have some problems with Gnome and the Login via console. The system actually boots fine and all kind of services like Postfix, IMAP, Samba, SSHD, Apache, etc. are avialable normally.

If I try however to work directly on the server I only see the completed Fedora progress icon and not as hoped for, the Login to Gnome. Also the attempt to change to a plain console with ALT-CTRL-F1 fails.

Since actually everything seems to work quite fine, I am somewhat helpless, according to should I look for, to get Gnome and the Console Login working again.

Debian :: Unable To Use Keyboard In Console Application

I tried to use NDN [URL] which is fork of famous DN . It's more advanced then Midnight Commander and I would like to use it to better understand Debian FS and do console works there. However, I have a problem and it seems that their support forum does not work, so I thought to ask for general help here, in case it's something that can be set in Debian. Problem is that when I run this manager I can't use arrow keys or 'num pad' or PgUp/PgDn/.... pad but only 'central part' of keyboard - regular keys and Fx buttons. So I was wondering if there could be some problem between terminal emulation and this application that can cause such behaviour which is unacceptable for normal usage, obviously.

Ubuntu :: Run Application Before Gdm (login Screen Or Auto Login)

Feb 22, 2010

I have program that work like Fedora Firstboot it's run only one time after finish installation. I have two questions to ask.

1. How can I start this application before gdm start (login screen or auto login)

2. How can I start this application in fix display resolution (800x600)

My method now is

(This is a part of script , this script execute from /etc/init.d/myfirstboot , I create symlink to /etc/rc2.d/S1myfirstboot for start it before anything)

gdm-stop # first time I use /etc/init.d/gdm stop
DISPLAY=:1
export DISPLAY
/usr/bin/Xorg :1 &

[Code]...

I don't understand why first time firstboot start the system will auto loging in but not complete yet and then my script is start and it's work does not fine I think that is another user is already login , but if I re run my firstboot again and again (by setting something that can revoke my firstboot and restart) it's work before auto login and every things is ok!
