I have tried the search, but have had difficulty finding threads on this.
Can someone recommend an excellent firewall to use with Ubuntu?
Is a firewall necessary on ubuntu? I've never thought about it until now. Do I need one? If so whats a good firewall to install? As you can tell im not too knowledgeable on this subject. I know (i think) linux has a built in firewall called iptables but ive never used it or looked into it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat is a good IP filter/firewall program? Seeing as how I like free softwares, I download a lot of torrents. When I was using Windows, I used PeerBlock (the newer fork of PeerGuardian), however, it's not available for Linux. What would be a good alternative for this in Linux? I tried iplist as it has a GUI, and it was extremely buggy and blocked random web pages even after I put them on the exceptions list. And MoBlock has no GUI from I understand, nor has it been updated in years.

I've tried Astaro, but it refuses to load after a restart. I'm hoping for AV as I support Windoze clients, and a VPN. Past that, I can deal with anything.

I am looking for a good and practical console application. I use midnight commander a lot, and I find it frustrating every time I press the F10 key it displays the drop menu items using the terminal. On occasions I make invisible the menu bar, by disabling in the view menu.
So I am looking for a good console application that when I use midnight commander if I press the function key buttons it doesn't display the drop down menu options.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am learning to setup firewall in my home for that i have selected four system(sys1,sys2....sys4) for testing .I have configured sys2 to act as a firewall with two NIC. sys3 and sys4 are inside the firewall . sys1 is not connected to firewall for testing purpose.
the IP assignments are follows :
sys1 : ( fedora, not connected to firewall i am thinking, But i am not sure )
IP : 192.168.2.1 ,
gateway : blank
dns1 : blank
dns2 : blank
sys2 firewall ,IPTABLES )
code....
what happened is that sys1(not connected to firewall) can ssh to sys4(connected,inside firewall),since the rules are written not to ssh form sys1 to sys4..
then I came to know whatever the request I give, It directly goes as sys1 --> sys4. Not as sys1-----> sys2(firewall)---> sys4 .and the firewall is not filtering and processing anything for both inbound and outbound (i think it's my mistake some where). the requests are directly going inside without firewall.
Are there any firewalls for Linux that will allow one to block certain ports for a specific application while allowing other programs to use the same port, or block Internet access altogether for specific applications?
Everything based on IPTables apparently can only block ports globally for all applications. SELinux is the only thing I've found so far that might have application-level Internet blocking capability, but it serves a broader array of security purposes and seems too complex for this task.
I don't need interactive popups like with Windows personal firewalls. I'm OK with having to edit a config file. This is for personal desktop Linux use, not a server.
I want to find a desktop application or command line tool to show two different timezone concurrently under LINUX.
Anyone knows there are such application?
Say i want to know the time at london and USA at the same time. (different time zone)
application to monitor application wise network usage?

Preferably something that works with IE and Firefox and one that is a 0U.
I suspect this is an initial configuration bug. All firewall logs seem to be going to all
three files. That causes a lot of clutter in the log files, and makes it difficult to see whether there are any serious problems being logged.
I was looking for some good Internet boosting software for Ubuntu, like speed connect for Windows that I can use. Mainly because I get terrible bandwidth In my dorm room and also because I share my laptop internet with my PS3 since it doesn't have a wireless card.

I LOVE Ubuntu, but the sketchiness with WIFI in Ubuntu is really frustrating (not that it's Ubuntu or GNU/Linux's fault necessarily). I'm trying to find a good WIFI card replacement for my girlfriend's MSI Wind u90, but seems both the Intel 3945abg and the Intel 4965agn - the cards usually recommended for that model - seem to be spotty at best in all recent versions of Ubuntu including the last long-term release. Has anyone had success with a Broadcom 1020 (in any laptop but especially in a netbook)?

I currently have a USB wireless adapter but want to get rid of it and use my PCI slot on the laptop. I am currently running lucid. I would rather not have to mess around with NDISWRAPPER again, something that has a native linux driver would be great.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOn the office we have a Firewall/VPN infrastructure. Everybody connects to internet trough an Access Point (Lynksys RWT120N), which, in turn, connects to a WatchWard/Firebox red box. I suppose this is the equipment that does the VPN stuff. Finally, the red box connects to a DSL modem from our ISP.The problem is: Everybody on the office can connect to the AP and surf the internet without any issues, excepting me when I connect with ubuntu 10.10. I have windows on the same machine and I can access the internet without problems.
What I have seen so far is that Network Manager associates with the AP, gets what I would consider all the expected information from DHCP, but internet connectivity is none. For "expected information from DHCP" i mean: IP address, gateway, and DNS.I can ping my assigned IP address, the gateway and even other machines in the same network. I cannot ping the DNS or other external IP addresses.
