Has anyone EVER been able to run this particular command? Well I seriously need to run it for the gdm installation on my system. How to specifying the the url to get that package_file? I installed this system from the fc8 live cd -- are the files I need on that disk?
View 6 RepliesSo I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought an Acer Aspire 7535-5415 laptop with Windows 7. I have burned ubuntu onto a cd. When I try to boot up the laptop with the cd in the drive it just boots up windows as it would normally and I don't get an options to install ubuntu or anything. I've tried both a cd that I burned and an official cd I picked up in the computing science department at my university. The same thing happens in both cases.

Here are my specs:

but as for the partitions such as /var and the others, I'm not sure what the best options would be to get the best bang for my buck. Also, is a swap file required anymore, will I see an appreciable different in performance if I just did not use one? If I need one, should it be on the SSD or one of the other drives?
i'v installed ubuntu 10.04 on 3 different desktops and 1 laptop. It has gone flawlessly on all 4. i a want to install it on my hp to dual boot(the others i just wiped the drives) but when i tell it to boot from the cd at first it looks like it might work, with the purple page, but after a few minutes, before i get to the install options i get an error message. my current operating systime is windows and i have an hp pavilion. with 2.5 gigs of ram and a descent graphics card.

I have just tryed to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto a USB to install on a netbook. I used the software recomended to prep the USB and booted to it.
In the opening menu where you can select to install on a partition I am unable to press enter, it seems to just reset the menu. The keyboard seems to be working fine because I can use the arrow keys.
I have been unable to find a solution to this problem online, all I have found is this simular issue, with no resolution.

The netbook I am using is the Samsung n220 which apparently works well with ubuntu.
I have windows7 with partition of C:40G, D:40G, E:70.I want to install fedora15,so I use the tool "Disk Management" of win7 to shrink E:.Then I have E:60G and 10G unallocated.
I use Liveusb-creator and boot from usb.It works well and I can use fedora15 just like livecd.But when I install fedora to hard disk,I meet a problem and I don't know how to solve it.
The installation procedure comes "Which type of installation would you like?".There's five options 1."Use All Space" 2."Replace Existing Linux System" 3."Shrink Current System" 4."Use Free Space" 5."Create Custom Layout".I've already got 10G unallocated space,so I select "Use Free Space".But the problem is that the fedora installer popups a messagebox says something that means that I don't have enough space to allocate to fedora15.
I come back to "Which type of installation would you like?" and select "Create Custom Layout".The installer display 4 entries of my hard disk:sda1 unknown 0M, sda2 100M windows remain partition, sda3 with capacity 39900M, sda4 with capacity 112625M.The partition display of my hard disk is so strange and there is no free space.

I am running the RedHat 7.3 install off a CD to put the system on an IDE flash drive. The flash drive appears as /sda1 on my system during installation. When I install the bootloader from the install CD it gives me the option of MBR on /hda which I do not want do. I select /sda1 and it puts the bootloader on first boot sector (not the MBR?) Although the installation works, is what I am doing creating a bootable primary hard drive? The flash IDE drive needs to be installed in an embedded system so my installation options are very limited i.e. the system does not have a CD-ROM or floppy to boot from. Are there options to put GRUB on the MBR of /sda1 during installation? Such as, with fdisk or the "force disk primary" option? Or, doesn't it matter?

View 4 Replies View RelatedBeen a while since I've been on here, but I was using Fedora 12 for the longest time and only recently started having problems. I kept getting errors and pop-up dialogs telling me to run yum-complete-transaction, which I tried as root many times. It would then give an error that it couldn't locate the repository and such. So, I looked through all my yum config files and changed a few things until I FINALLY got the command to do something, only it did all kinds of strange things as I was running low on EXT3 disk space and using old Windows' partition to store a lot of things on.
Now, I backed up all the /home directories and files as well as /root, just in case this didn't go smoothly and I still ran out of disk space. If I had the money, I'd buy a storage stick and just back up everything, but that's not an option at the moment. Now I have a crippled version of XP (pretty much useless from a trojan, even though I had McAfee AND Windows Defender running), and half of Fedora 12 with 2 different boot images! When I first did this, I used a 10G partition to install Fedora, which was plenty then. What's left of Win still resides on about 65G of space, but I have a lot of files there I want to keep. Fisrst thing I want to know is, should I look anywhere else on the Fedora disk to find files I may need, just in general? There's still a LITTLE space on the drive to back up stuff if I need to.
Second, while I still had enough to work with, I managed to download and burn a F14 Live CD, which is running now. I saw the option on the desktop to install it, and can get my config files and such from the backups if need be. I do NOT have a DVD burner, so if I have to I can use regular 700MB CDs, but only if they are available.The next thing I need to know is if I can install F14 from the web, without having to download any more ISOs, (again, assuming they are available). I know all my DSL settings so that's not a problem, I just need to find out if I can install it that way before I go clicking that icon. Anyone with experience with this would be helpful. I'm ready (MORE than ready) to go through with it, I just don't want to get "stuck" once I start the process. My download rate is around 200k/sec, so it's going to take some time no matter which way I (can) go.
I bought a new NVidia Asus EN210 for my HTPC, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.
First I made a live USB disk of 10.10 with Unetbootin and when I choose the option of "try Ubuntu" it starts loading and then just hangs, still showing the menu of boot options. After this I tried Xubuntu on a USB disk. This one also starts loading but then just fails. I also tried XBMC Live. This one does show the Ubuntu 10.04 screen but then just shows a black screen.
After this I found a CD with Ubuntu 10.04, I think or it is 10.10, laying around in my room. I booted it and once I select an option from the install menu it starts to load, but then just gives a black screen with a flashing "-" sign.
The strange thing is, once I pop in the old video card, which is an ATI HD4350, my Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD on USB disk does work and it does get past the menu of boot options (in my second paragraph I describe how this isn't the case with Ubuntu 10.10 combined with my NVidia card).
I am not able to see any dual boot options on restart.... getting back the windows?

When configuring a custom kernel using fedoraproject.org instructions, the make menuconfig options for LIRC are not in the .config file anywhere. I checked the kernel tree and all the files are there in the .../drivers/input/lirc subdirectory (I need the lirc_dev and lirc_i2c drivers). I reset the .config to its original settings to make sure I didn't mess up. I also grep'ed the .config file for any LIRC related settings, none found. Also I'm not getting any sound from the radio-aztech driver.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.
I've got an ASUS eee1005 that I'm trying to load eeebuntu -- I've read good things about it! However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I can boot to the thumbdrive (8gig, btw) but I don't think I've got the right files on it to do the install. Here's what appears on the thumbdrive:

I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?
How do I get advanced installation options on the LiveCD? In former versions, I could hit F4 for modes. Do I need to use the alternate CD instead?
For reference, this is what I'm trying to do.
I want to install squid with the options --enable-storeio=null. I am using Ubuntu Server 10.10. Can I install squid using apt-get with options or use another package manager?

If I install libpcap using the 'apt-get install' command, it installs 0.9.8 version, and the libpcap application works fine. If, however, I install libpcap (version 1.1.1.) from sources, the libpcap application does not work (does not capture packets). When installing libpcap from sources, I use ./configure command without any arguments. I believe 'apt-get install' installs the libpcap with certain config options which I'm not using when installing from sources. How to see with which config options 'apt-get install' installs a package?

View 2 Replies View RelatedPrevious installation (11.1) left boot manager intact and I had three options on menu. Windoze, OS/2 and Opensuse. They all worked and if I selected Opensuse I then got a Grub boot screen with normal options from which I could start opensuse as usual.
New installation of 11.3 I selected MBR option but think I must have left grub as the boot method. I now boot into the grub screen but if I select OS/2 there is only Windoze left on menu and no OS/2.
What should I use to put back the booting to how it was? Can I use opensuse program to do it or should I use OS/2 partition manager?
Yesterday, after I reinstall suse linux enterprise 11 in my note book. I got some error messages. They are :

The story is when I started installing suse linux, I checked first the live cd and I got message that live cd is okay. But, when the installation process was running, I got 2 messages error. But, the messages were informing me to verified from software management module.
So, my questions are :What are acroread-9.3.2-0.1.1.i586.rpm and yast2-pkg-bindings-2.17.45-0.2.10.i586.rpm and what are they fungtions? If my guess is not wrong, acroread means acrobat reader. Is it true? Where is others place I can download them (no.1,2,3) beside the live cd? Or, if the easyest way is live cd. As yast2 got error, is there an other way I can installed them (no.1,2,3)?
I am running Lucid in my Apple iBook of course powerpc architecture and due to firefox's cruel treat on my CPU, I want to install opera which I am told is a bit lightweiht and friendly on CPU.I tried sudo "apt-get install opera" and I got "the package opera does not have an installation candidate .... and so forth....", I visited the opera for powerpc download page and I couldn't see Ubuntu among the listed OS'ses. I am not sure what to do? Is their an option coz I love firefox but my iBook wont stand it without the 100% CPU usage.

I reinstalled grub with suse dvd and it went ok. Pc working properly. But then i tried to fix this once for all and changed the fstab options from /dev-by-id to uuid (all partitions : swap, /, /home etc ).Is uuid a definite solution ?Why is the pc not able to start from there ?
Since i moved the partitions with uuid option in fstab and even after reinstalling grub the pc is not starting anymore . It gives me the boot menu (linux suse/failsafe) and then a black screen left with no keyboard nor mouse available.
