Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot During Partitioning - Got Only Three Options In Cd

Jan 29, 2010

1. I have windows xp on my notebook compaq presario v2000.
2. Wanted to load linux as dual boot.
3. Tried with Suse linux, but there was some blank or black screen problem after installation.
4. Someone suggested Ubuntu linux.
5. Downloaded and burned ubuntu on a cd.
6. But this time during installation during partitioning there was a serious problem.
7. On ubuntu webpage they say for partiioning i will get 4 option, but i got only three options in my cd.
8. The missing option was the most important , which was required for dual boot. " Guided resize and use free space".
9. So i had to abort my Ubuntu installation as using any other option could have effected my current xp installation or might have formated my whole notebook.
10. So any comment why the dual boot partitioning option was absent in my ubuntu cd.
11. Or there is some thing to be activated in my notebook setting to enable dual boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: No List Of OS Options On Dual Boot?

Jun 28, 2011

I just installed a dual boot win7-Ubuntu 11.04. When I reboot, there is no list of OS options displayed, it just boots to windows. Below are the details of how I got to this point.I Used GParted to delete all partitions off a hardard drive. Then installed win7 from CD. Win7 works fine. Then I formated an ext4 partion and installed Ubuntu 11.04 from the iso CD. But on reboot I don't see a list of OS options. When I boot from the Ubuntu 11.04 CD, I can view the usual Unix directories in the hard drive Ubuntu root (bin, etc, lib, usr, var) and the /boot/grub directory. So Ubuntu looks like it got installed. What else can I trouble shoot to get the list of OS options displayed?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Win7 And Grubloader Options?

Jan 1, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu and thus am now dual booting it with W7 (which was installed first). These are the options I get with Grub:

Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-16-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-16-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with this; why is there an option for Linux 16 and then for 14? At the moment I'm booting into Ubuntu using Linux 16. I'm a sticker for looks and would prefer reducing it down just to:
Windows 7
Ubuntu

Ubuntu Installation :: Step 4 Options - Dual Boot Up With Windows 7 At Start-up

Aug 29, 2010

clarify the outcomes of the four step 4 options. I have sda1 - 15GB; sda2 - 106.9MB; sda3 - 163.8 GB; free space 141.1GB on a brand new machine - no user files or programmes to worry about.

I want: dual boot up choosing between ubuntu and Windows 7 at start-up, "my files" (presumably equivalent to ~/home) to be available to both windows and ubuntu and to be "separate" for no "second guessing" back-up AND no problem ubuntu (and windows I suppose) upgrades.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Options - Can't Select Any Of The Menu Options Except For Boot From First Hard Drive

So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

Ubuntu :: Sharing Folders Between Dual-boot Options

Apr 25, 2010

I can access the folders that I have created in XP. What I would like to know is whether or not it is possible to share or link folders between the two OS. For example, I try to keep my files organized as best I can and had been keeping pictures in my XP "My Pictures" folder, but have to do a bit of directory digging to get to that same folder from Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install - Or Any Other Based Distro - Just Hangs - Still Showing The Menu Of Boot Options

Mar 11, 2011

I bought a new NVidia Asus EN210 for my HTPC, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.

First I made a live USB disk of 10.10 with Unetbootin and when I choose the option of "try Ubuntu" it starts loading and then just hangs, still showing the menu of boot options. After this I tried Xubuntu on a USB disk. This one also starts loading but then just fails. I also tried XBMC Live. This one does show the Ubuntu 10.04 screen but then just shows a black screen.

After this I found a CD with Ubuntu 10.04, I think or it is 10.10, laying around in my room. I booted it and once I select an option from the install menu it starts to load, but then just gives a black screen with a flashing "-" sign.

The strange thing is, once I pop in the old video card, which is an ATI HD4350, my Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD on USB disk does work and it does get past the menu of boot options (in my second paragraph I describe how this isn't the case with Ubuntu 10.10 combined with my NVidia card).

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install Or Boot 10.10 (dual Boot With Windows 7)

Oct 19, 2010

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a machine that already has Windows 7 on one partition. Obviously I intend to install it on the other free partition. So I downloaded the iso burnt it onto the disk and pop in the disk and the boot the machine. The installation screen comes up I selected the first option (Try Ubuntu without installation), I just see a prompt after a few seconds and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. Unable to detect a signal, The monitor goes into standby. The same thing happens if I use "install Ubuntu" option as well. I downloaded minimal install version Ubuntu and tried to install with that. since its old school installation, the installation completed without any errors, but when I restart the grub come up and when I select to boot into Ubuntu, I see the same behavior i.e. the screen goes blank and never boots to anything. This is a machine on which I was using 10.4 until yesterday.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Dual Boot After 10.04 Install

Jun 16, 2010

I have a PC with 3 hard disks, one IDE (30GB) plus two Sata (80 & 180 GB). The IDE is the disk master. Previously I had Ubuntu on the IDE disk, the smaller SATA for Windows XP and the larger SATA for all data. I recently decided to do a clean Windows install and thought that at the same time I'd swap the two OS disks. After I successfully installed the two systems (Ubuntu is Grub 2) I don't get any options presented at boot up. If I boot from hard disk and choose the IDE disk Windows books immediately. If I try to change the disk boot order in the BIOS to choose the Ubuntu disk, nothing happens. Any idea how to get my dual boot back?

She's happy with Ubuntu so far, but I'd like to know why I can't use XP anymore. btw, I actually made the mistake of using the import accounts option, which filled up the new partition and made Ubuntu unbootable. Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Install On Netbook ?

Jun 14, 2010

I am running Windows 7 starter on my Samsung N150 Netbook. I have successfully installed Ubuntu on the 4 GB flash drive, and I have been running it for several weeks in the "try mode" without any problems. Now I decided to permanently install Ubuntu netbook edition on my computer from a flash drive. I am following this guide [url] and ran into a big problem on step #5 of the guide and step #4 of the installation. I am not getting the option of installing them side by side, choose between them each startup! Which is what I want to do... I am only getting the option of erase and use entire drive, and specify partitions manually. My goal is to keep Windows 7 on my netbook, and have an option of dual booting into either operating system.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Dual Boot Install Option

Dec 28, 2010

No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install / LiveCD Freeze At "scrolling Dots" / Change Boot Options Will Allow It To Work?

May 26, 2011

I'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.

Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.

Debian Installation :: Install XP Dual Boot On 7.8 Box

Is it possible to install Windows XP on a machine that already has Debian 7.8? I find lots of articles on installing Debian after but not before XP.

I would like to get a prompt at startup to select Windows XP or Debian 7.8 and then choose which one I want. The reason I want to do that is because I have Guitar Pro on XP and cant find anything as good and also I want to watch Netflix and cant seem to be able to find a way to do that on Debian 7.8 except windows emulator which defeats the point of Debian anyway. Also my Epson V500 will not work on Debian 7.1 and I have tried everything, been to Epson, installed drivers etc..

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot On System, Win 7 SP1 Wont Install?

Feb 23, 2011

So heres the thread i had a while back ( url) that had you guys help me setup the pretty standard dual boot of Win 7 and Ubuntu. I have 2 hard drives, main one (640gig) and backup (80gb). I have Win7 installed on the 640 and ubuntu on the 80.

So i have tried installing the SP1 twice today and it has failed. When i click on details on why it failed, it says: url

I can only imagine that this has to do with my Dual Boot. Is there anything i can do or am i stuck? I THINK that my grub and master boot and all that was on the second hard drive and it is the first drive in line to boot up...so i thought i wouldnt have any issues. Not totally sure though.

Im tempted to just remove Ubuntu, its cool to say i have it, but i honestly havent loaded up onto it more than 5 times since i installed it. When you have windows already...its near impossible to want to get onto a free OS that doesnt have the codecs or programs and im not familiar with it. If it was all i had though, (aka didnt own Windows) then obviously it would be my main OS and im sure id love it and have is customized and perfect.

I specified to use the Free Space remaining on the HD. The installation finished but now only boots into FC12 and does not prompt me for the OS I want to boot.
