6. But this time during installation during partitioning there was a serious problem.
7. On ubuntu webpage they say for partiioning i will get 4 option, but i got only three options in my cd.
8. The missing option was the most important , which was required for dual boot. " Guided resize and use free space".
9. So i had to abort my Ubuntu installation as using any other option could have effected my current xp installation or might have formated my whole notebook.
10. So any comment why the dual boot partitioning option was absent in my ubuntu cd.
11. Or there is some thing to be activated in my notebook setting to enable dual boot.

Jun 28, 2011I just installed a dual boot win7-Ubuntu 11.04. When I reboot, there is no list of OS options displayed, it just boots to windows. Below are the details of how I got to this point.I Used GParted to delete all partitions off a hardard drive. Then installed win7 from CD. Win7 works fine. Then I formated an ext4 partion and installed Ubuntu 11.04 from the iso CD. But on reboot I don't see a list of OS options. When I boot from the Ubuntu 11.04 CD, I can view the usual Unix directories in the hard drive Ubuntu root (bin, etc, lib, usr, var) and the /boot/grub directory. So Ubuntu looks like it got installed. What else can I trouble shoot to get the list of OS options displayed?

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with this; why is there an option for Linux 16 and then for 14? At the moment I'm booting into Ubuntu using Linux 16. I'm a sticker for looks and would prefer reducing it down just to:

Nov 25, 2009fresh installed F12 on secondary drive, XP on primary drive. Then swapped drives making F12 primary. I boot into F12 fine, I also get menu to boot Other but when I choose this option instead of going into XP I get error 22 no partition? I can swap the drives around & boot into windows fine. I know I must not be pointing or having F12 pointing to the correct partition for XP.

I want: dual boot up choosing between ubuntu and Windows 7 at start-up, "my files" (presumably equivalent to ~/home) to be available to both windows and ubuntu and to be "separate" for no "second guessing" back-up AND no problem ubuntu (and windows I suppose) upgrades.

Apr 25, 2009I've just installed Fedora 10 onto a box which had XP and Knoppix dual-booting. XP is on 1 HDD and Knoppix and Fedora share a second HDD. I installed from Fedora Live CD and accepted the Fedora MBR when it came to that option. I edited the Fedora MBR to show Knoppix residing on /dev/sdb1 (with Fedora on sdb2). XP boots without a problem, however, when I try to boot into Knoppix, I get the message "invalid or unsupported executable format".Following advice in other strings, here is my grub.conf file entry:

May 8, 2010I've had Windows XP Home installed on my netbook (Toshiba NB205) and I've just tried to install squeeze via net install. In particular, I installed grub. Everything seemed to go ok during the installation, but when I boot up, all that appears is a blank screen with nothing but at "j" and a cursor. One thing I can think of that might offer a clue, is that when asked to installed grub, the installer said it recognized two operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP Home, and Windows NT/XP. The latter is not really an operating system, but the backup partition.
I don't know how this might affect grub's functioning. What does this "j" mean? Looking at this: [URL]. Could this have some thing to do with boot flag? Should I switch it to my NTFS partition instead of my root partition? Doing that at least let's me boot into Windows. But that's not what I want. I've never dual booted before. So I booted back up with my USB, intending to reinstall Debian, and it loaded grub instead. So apparently grub is now on my USB. Then it booted me into Debian.

Jun 5, 2010I've been using ubuntu for a couple of years rather successfully on my dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. It upgraded to 8.0(4?) LTS, 10.04LTS and I kept it there until this afternoon I followed the instructions on the ubuntu site to open up a terminal and update-manager --somearg to provide me with a nice little "Upgrade" button on the update manager. I clicked said button per the instructions, let it do it's downloading and whatever else it does. The last step of the installation is a system reboot. I let it do that, and then my grub menu comes up as more-or-less this:

with a blinking cursor under the S for a LONG time (used the power switch after ~40 mins). I tried the second 2.6.32-32 option for recovery mode. It spit a bunch of gibberish to the screen for a couple seconds and then stopped, presumably doing the same thing, just with 100% more gibberish. I tried booting into Vista, that worked fine. Just to reiterate, I've not yet seen a 10 LTS login screen or desktop, and can't get one yet (just a "Starting up ...") Just to add, I did try searching, but since the only info I had to go on was 8 LTS to 10 LTS upgrade, and "Starting up ...", well those are just hard keywords to get any meaningful info.

Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr).Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:

Feb 15, 2010After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

Apr 25, 2010I can access the folders that I have created in XP. What I would like to know is whether or not it is possible to share or link folders between the two OS. For example, I try to keep my files organized as best I can and had been keeping pictures in my XP "My Pictures" folder, but have to do a bit of directory digging to get to that same folder from Ubuntu.

Mar 25, 2011I have a fairly old Dell Dimension 8400 with two disks. I have Windows XP on the first disk (750GB) and have a second unused 200GB disk that I installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto.
Here are the problems I had:
1) After the install, the computer would only boot into Linux. I had no options at all at boot up for which OS to boot into.
2) I verified that my 750GB WinXP disk was still intact (/dev/sda). I tried created a file for WinXP in /etc/grub.d taken from the 40_custom file. I added a menuentry section to it and ran grub-update. grub-update complained about an error ddf1 invalid # of disks in RAID partition.
3) Ubuntu didn't seem to know about my Linksys AE1000 wireless adapter. And since I has no Wireless on the computer, I couldn't download drivers.
4) I rebooted the computer after trying to update grub and now my PC boots into Windows again.
I expected to install Ubuntu and then have grub2 give me a choice of WinXP or Linux. Why did it intitally boot only into Linux, and why did it strangely revert back to WinXP later on?

Dec 16, 2008I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.
I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:
kde-filesystem.noarch 4-20.fc10 installed
kde-settings.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
kde-settings-kdm.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed

I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.
Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.
Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.
Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.
These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.

Drive #1 (sda) Master CS Ubuntu 9.04 grub upgraded to grub2 version 1.96
Drive #2 (sdb) Slave CS Ubuntu 9.10 grub2 version 1.97 /boot is (sdb1) root is (sdb5)
grub2 is installed in /boot (sdb1) and the mbr of (sdb)
I want to be able to boot drive #2 from drive #1 grub menu at boot time. I have run �update-grub and it probes and finds (sdb5) and creates a new grub.cfg called grub.cfg.new in the /boot folder, but the new cfg file does not show (sdb5) or (sdb) it shows all other changes that I made such as splash screens and they are working. How do I get it to recognize drive #2 with Ubuntu 9.10. I can boot each drive independently of one another and I can boot 9.04 with 9.10 if I swap the drives around. And run update-grub The auto probe is working in the Ubuntu 9.10 and may be working partly in the 9.04.
This may or may not be a problem, but is a pain anyway. When I run update-grub in 9.04's grub version 1.96, it does not change anything in the current grub.cfg it does make a new file called grub.cfg.new I have to go into /boot/grub and change grub.cfg to old and change grub.cfg.new to grub.cfg I do not have this problem running the same command in Ubuntu 9.10's grub. It finds changes and os's and automatically updates the current grub.cfg

Jun 4, 2010I have the following PC set up:
Dell 8400 with 3 GB of RAM with 3 160 GB SATA drives:
The first one has Windows XP installed on it.
The second one has been newly formatted and Ubuntu 10.04 has just been installed on it (20 GB / and 6 GB swap) with grub being installed on the first partition and not the master boot record. The remainder will be for storage for Windows.
The third drive is simply storage for Windows.
At this point I am able to boot XP just fine, but I'm not able to boot Linux. I just getting a blinking cursor or the PC just reboots when I choose Linux. I believe I have set up my boot.ini properly using:
C:Bootsectc.lnx="Linux Ubuntu"
After running dd if=/dev/sdc1 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 and putting that file in place.
For reference, I don't believe this is a Linux problem, as much as I am simply trying to guide the ntldr to be properly pointed to a place where it can boot Linux. When I go into the bios and disable the first and the third hard drives, grub pops right up and I'm able to boot Linux with no problem, so that piece is fine. I think it's just now trying to get the correct syntax so I can boot Linux without having to disable drives and reenable them.
For kicks I even tried these syntax types in boot.ini:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)="Linux11"
(i.e. 2nd disk, 1st partition ...etc...)
I read many troubleshooting documents on dual booting and so forth but I just can't get this right. For reference, I stated the way XP views my Hard Drives in the intro, which seem to be a different order than Linux sees them, yet I believe I've tried all the combos of settings for this to work (yet clearly have not). I have attached the output of boot_info_script*.sh here: [URL]. Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ..... Devices which don't seem to have a corresponding hard drive.

Jul 22, 2010I run Lucid on ext3. I really miss not being able to reach Lucid from my dual boot Vista.I have installed the latest fsdriver. I have also tried this:[URL].. which does not work. (Is it because fsdriver is still in the system?) I also tried these methods but to no avail.[URL]. The problem seems to be related to fsdriver not being able to handle ext3 with Inode size = 256. Going back to ext2 for only the home partition seems complicated?

Jun 19, 2010This morning I attempted to 'clean' up some old files/programs from my dual mounted (Vista/10.04) laptop. All seemed ok until I tried to run Vista and I got the following:

missing or corrupt
I then tried to reboot into Ubuntu but it keeps trying to load windows. It looks like I have somehow lost my grub, so now I have lost Ubuntu and Vista. I tried my Vista Start Up disk and at the command prompt I entered:
Bootrec.ext /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
on restart it went back to the 'missing or corrupt' information. Is there some way I get get back to normal?

May 17, 2009I currently have XP installed on a NetBook (Samsung NC10), and would like to run Fedora on it. I'm currently looking at putting Fedora onto a flash memory card to test it works OK on the hardware, before installing it to the hard disk. The problem I've got is that the boot sector is occupied by WDE software (TrueCrypt). Will this pose a problem for dual-booting XP with Fedora, or will GRUB move the boot loader in the usual way?
