Fedora Installation :: Program Add/remove And Found Many Unusual Languages Supported
May 27, 2009
A question on the packages installed. Went to program add/remove and found many unusual languages supported. Will I have problems if I remove them?? Also is KDE any better than GNOME for the desktop. recommendation on a book covering Fedora that the inexperienced can understand.

I installed Fedora 12. I noticed that every possible language support is included in Firefox. What is the reason for this? Will Fedora and Firefox still work if I remove these languages?

Ubuntu didn't start up all of a sudden. It got error and stuck at : Minimal BASH-like line editing - Ubuntu Forums. I tried many ways suggested to go into menu mode but failed. I followed online solutions.. but none of them helped. I tried to list all partitions and I got this: ls
(memdisk), (hd0), (hd0,msdos), (fd0)
i tried
root (hd0)/boot , it said unknown filesystem
root (hd0,msdos)/boot, but it's a windows partition
root (f0)/boot, it said read error
The setup is dual boot with wubi, so i logged on to windows7 and installed partition magic, but i couldn't see the linux parittion, the whole harddisk is 500G, but only 2xxG is visible in NTFS. I used liveCD to boot the system, but when i run sudo fdisk -l, i didn't see anything. I have no idea why it happened, and the last successful log on was in Ubuntu, so i doubt it's due to windows update. I am going to try Solution #1 (10.04) in wubi megathread. Can anyone suggest what has actually gone wrong? WIll i able to recover the data in my linux parition given partition magic cannot see it?

I've installed yesterday xmms and now I want to uninstall it. I've done it with yum. When I uninstall it like this: "yum remove xmms", then yum removes this package, but, when I check "yum list | grep xmms" I get full list of other packages like bluecurve-xmms-skin.noarch, gkrellxmms2.x86_64, gxmms2.x86_64 , ...
I want to cleanly remove the xmms, so I should remove all this packages "manually"? Is there a method to check wich packages are not used by any program on my computer and remove them? Or any method to remove all packages with a program automatic?

Sometimes when I try to open some chat application i get a strange warning message asking for password. The message is that /usr/libexec/mission-control is trying to gain access of the system, please provide the password. On top of the message box it shows "Unlock Keyring".
This very weird, as I am also unable to do a print-screen when this message box is up.
what this message is all about and what does the executable /usr/libexec/mission-control do?
I am using Empathy as my chat application

When I install wine the add/remove program wants to install both 86_64 and i686 files. I have the x86_64 version of Fedora 14. I am having problems with counterstrike and have installed it using Wine, have noted problems when both types of files are installed.
I would like to have Fedora set up just right but as with all Linux distros, am having trouble keeping my head above water with fc14. I have success up to a point and then want to go back to Windows for its simplicity. Just this wine problem

I'm trying to test out UEFI boot and install with Fedora 13. It looks like it is not supported...at least not in the standard x86-64 DVD image. Running 'dumpet' on the .iso shows no EFI boot section (whereas, for example, RHEL6 Beta-2 x86-64 DVD .iso does show one); see output below. Will there [ever] be UEFI supported boot/install CD/DVD .isos for Fedora?

I have installed RHEL5, solved the problems around it and started to set up the GRUB. I have set the menu.lst with simple
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
mkeactive
chainloader +1
and tried to boot the Win7 on that partition. NO LOADER came up and since that moment
Grub is only in "Minimal BASH-like line editing" mode. I have tried all of I have googled, nothing have worked. There is a problem with even finding /boot/grub/stage2, or anything else, grub won't let me mount any partition. When I try to find any file, it says file not found. It is important to say that all I did to cause this was change in menu.lst
rootnoverify (hd1,1) to rootnoverify (hd1,0)m nothing else! There is no logic in this....

I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.
Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.

I have been trying to install the FGLRX driver for a Radeon HD 4850. According to this page and others on the web, it says that Xorg 7.5 isn't supported by the driver. I was just wondering is it possible to install Xorg 7.4 on Fedora 12, if not what release of Fedora should I use (i.e does Fedora 11 support Xorg 7.4?)

How can I only include one or two specific languages? Will I have to specify to remove each language group? If so, what is the syntax for yum?

I'm often switching between the following three languages to check spelling in evolution, firefox and gnote:
English / United States
Dutch / Netherlands
Croatian / Croatia
The problem is that the language list is huge, what makes switching between the languages difficult. There are more than 20 types of English spelling and 3 Duch spellings (see the screen-shot).
I would like to configure this language list, so that only the relevant languages are displayed.

I am new to fedora and installed wine to see if I could get the sony reader software working (required to access sony bookstore from my sony ereader). Well the program did not work though it did create icons on my desktop. wine kept crashing and I said lets just get rid of it. I uninstalled wine via yum remove and nothing appeared to happen so I did rpm -qa |grep wine and saw lots of stuff. So I simply did yum remove wine* and then a rpm -qa |grep wine was empty. however wine is still under applications on my desktop and still has a category for programs--reader. I should also mention that while wine was installed I attempted to remove the reader via the wine uninstalller but a) wine gave a message of a core crash and b) all the uninstaller did was give me the option to reinstall the reader program. so now when I attempt to open an epub it tries with the sony reader software. I know I can just right click to use another program but for now I want wine gone completely from my pc and the sony program gone.

Adding extra spell check library's in FC 11 Gnome is really easy.
Open gnome terminal.
Su to root or use sudo :
# su
Search with yum to your language:
# yum search hunspell
<snip long output list with different languages>
hunspell-nl.noarch : Dutch hunspell dictionaries
I want the Dutch hunspell dictionary, but you fill out the right language for the language support you want: # yum install hunspell-nl
This will install the dutch hunspell dictionary or the dictionary of your choice. After you installed this dictionary it will be immediately available in gnome apps and Evolution.
