Apr 8, 2009Dual PII 400, 512Mb with a Promise SuperTrak 100 IDE Array Controller. At present I have only one drive on the controller, configured for 1 JBOD array. I install FC9 with no problem. New partition is created and formatted, Grub is installed, and then... Grub is found and booted, but then I get:
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... No volume groups found Volume group "VolGroup00" not found Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01) mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' I can boot in rescue mode, chroot to the installed system. I changed the kernel boot parm "root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00"
Fedora :: Add/remove Programs From Installation Media?
Feb 6, 2011Installed Fedora 14 32-bit with gnome on an older laptop for my son (want to start him early learning multiple OS's). the wireless card is not working (don't know why yet) but in the mean time I wanted to just add/remove software right from the installation media (full DVD). However, when I open system -> administration -> add/remove software, nothing is available. Trying to enable any of the sources listed under software sources tries to use the internet, which I don't have up yet and I don't see any option to add a new source... although I don't know why adding software from the install media would not be an available option by default?So how do I add/remove software from the install media using this add/remove software management tool? I don't want to have to browse the dvd directly for packages, I want to browse by the nice categories and have any dependencies taken care of for me... and the searching capability is nice to

Apr 30, 2010In both of these areas, when I actually go to "Install" the things, whether it be adding or removing programs, or doing the Update Manager, I get the same error as soon as I click "Install," and it fails to install any selected programs/updates.
Here is the following error:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I have not been able to find this "sudo dpkg" file to manually run.

Dec 30, 2009i have fedora12 and have been noticing that on a few programs (xvidcap, nALFS; just to name a couple) anyways these programs when i go to install they will come up with a missing dependency error and so i'll go hunt them down and install them and i am told that they are already installed...so what is the deal...any ideas. should i just go for a reinstall of the whole system?

Jan 19, 2010I have a set of two amd64 machines with Debian Lenny. Machine 2 reads all the users' information from the Machine 1 through LDAP. Also, in Machine 2 I set up a dchroot environment for 32 bits compatibility ( following [URL]
In addition to the above instructions, on this Machine 2, I set up /etc/libnss*, /etc/ldap/*, and /etc/nsswitch.conf both for the amd64 and for the i386 environments. I have no problems if I'm in the native amd64 mode. However, once I enter the i386 dchroot, some strange things happen:
1) For users from uid=1000 to uid=1031, I get an error if running 'whoami' (Cannot find name for user ID XXXX) and if I run 'id' , I get all the correct group numbers but no translation to group names in parenthesis as it should be. 'ls -l' also only lists group numbers but no names.
2) for user 1032 I cannot even change into the dchroot, I get the error "E: Group '1,031' not found"

For some reason (hardware - I am guessing) the LiveCD does not boot on some laptops. The LiveCD worked well on my Dell Inspiron 1525 without any problems but my Fujitsu-Siemens refused to boot up. If you are trying to install or use F12 with the LiveCD ISO image burnt onto a CD on a laptop and fails with the following error:[drm:drm_mode_rmfb] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own Boot has failed, sleeping foreverthis workaround may work for you. Sometimes it will come up with another error about 'Root Device Not Found'
The workaround only works on a bootable USB key for some other reason, created with 'live-usb creator' and not a CD nor a LiveCD image on a USB created on a windows machine. I have tried them all.

Fedora Installation :: 15 Installation Fails With Grub Error - File Not Found
May 24, 2011Ive installed about 50+ boxes with ubuntu/mint/fedora/etc but f15 is giving me a real headache...
I tried a fresh install over f14 with this drive (sdb, sda is my backup disk)
Installed obviously in part7
After rebooting (successful copied live image on hdd)

After another couple of installs (with lvm & w/o lvm) & even disconnecting the second harddrive -> same issue
Typing 'ls' in the rescue grub prompt returns

Cant 'ls /' into a single them - unknown filesystem (grub is installed in mbr of sdb) 'linux rescue' (wanted to try manual grub installation) command didnt work either.
Now again on fedora 14, same installation procedure, works fine. (and i wont bother doing a full distro upgrade from f14)

Oct 23, 2010I'm a new Fedora user and I having difficulty with the product.I downloaded both the live cd and dvd of F13. I installed F13 from the live cd and after it completed I created my user name and then rebooted. Once I logged in I went to Administration -> add/remove program. I then clicked on package collections and ticked off the ones that I wanted. I then clicked on the APPLY button and I noticed that in the lower left corner of the screen (below the left panel and just above the Help button) it said Running and then nothing. If I attempt to close the screen it says that all selections will be lost. I also went back and set the filter to list "all installed" and the programs that I had selected were in the list.I then decided to try the dvd iso, so I blew everything away and installed F13 from there, but I encountered the same thing.So I'm at a loss what I'm doing incorrectly

Aug 21, 2010I just installed Fedora 13 today, everything is working including the internet. However, when I try to get more programs it says that it cannot find the sources, and a cache reload will fix it. I wasn't sure at first what that ment, being a begginer, but I think it means going into system-refresh package lists. So I do that,ut it still wont give me the program list. I'm really confused, I come from using windows computers and I don't know what to do now, me be a little clearer, when I click on one of the catagores to find software, nothing comes up but the defalt packages that come with the system. I go into the system-Software menu, and there are no boxes cheked. I thought that this maybe to problem, so I try to cheak the top box labled without parentheses "Fedora 13 - 1386". I just installed Fedora 11 on a Drive that I had recently ran Ubuntu 9.04. I did re-partition and format the drive. I am also running Win XP Pro on another drive, and can boot from either. The computer is older, but all the hardware seemed to work fine with Ubuntu and altough I had to format the install drive a couple times the installation seemed to go ok.

The /upgrade directory doesn't exist, but it does the /boot/upgrade where the vmlinuz is. uninstall and reinstall the preupgrade, rebooting inmediatly, but I don't know how to uninstall and if this is the solution. How can I uninstall the preupgrade?
Fedora Installation :: Error - No Usable Disks Have Been Found
Feb 25, 2011I'm in the process of trying to install FC14 64 bit to my Window 7 64 bit system. This new system has a 6.0 Gb/s internal hard drive.When I reboot with the F14 install disk I have made it past the disk verification (is Verified) and then picking a language but then I get the message "No usable disks have been found". In Win 7, the Disk Management window shows that 184 GB of space are free. Is there some disk preparation that I should do to make this space available?

Oct 15, 2009New to fedora and a bit stuck atm. I got Fedora 11 installed ok and working fine. I then installed Oracle, Adobe Reader and Opera. All seemed to go ok. On booting the machine today, it booted fine, but when I click on places->computer or places-network or firefox or the file browser all I get is the arrow with the ring spinning around it for a bit and then nothing.
So, I tried to start up Firefox from a terminal and I get:
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 : version 'GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdcc+.so.6)
I get a few errors when I try and start opera, but one of them is the same as above. I tried nautilus - same thing. I'd be willing to bet it's the same for places->computer and places->network but I don't know how to start those up from the terminal. Part of the install instructions I followed have almost certainly caused it, but I don't know how to reverse them, this is what I did:
"unzip Oracle_Access_Manager10_1_4_0_1_linux_GCClib.zip
This gives you 2 files:
libgcc_s.so.1
libstdc++.so.5
Now move the libgcc_s.so.1 file to /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1
sudo mv libgcc_s.so.1 /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1
And the most important one:
sudo ln -sf /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1 /lib/libgcc_s.so
(Even after the ldconfig command is given in the reboot fase, the link for /lib/libgcc_s.so remains!)
Then you have to rename the /usr/lib/gcc/i586-redhat-linux/4.4.1/libgcc_s.so to /usr/lib/gcc/i586-redhat-linux/4.4.1/libgcc_s_so
Otherwise /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 will be used in link and not /lib/libgcc_s.so, therefore the link will fail
Now you can start the installer by
./runInstaller.sh
And the linking will succeed."

Dec 11, 2009I am trying to install kcachegrind and during the ./configure phase I got the following error:

Now I guess I have QT installed and I tried to do the following:
./configure --with-qt-includes=/usr/lib64/qt4/include
but that did not work either.. actually checking further I found that the folder include is missing in usr/lib64/qt4/ !!!!

Similarly, if I click on System>Add/Remove Software>Package Collections, I get No groups could be found. A cache refresh should fix this. I don't see how to do a cache refresh. I tried rpm --rebuilddb, which didn't do any good and um clean all which also did no good. I did manage to do the updates with yum updates But I don't want to have to use yum at the command line all the time to do updates.
