Fedora Installation :: Lost All Data On Drive By Bad Clicks - Change User To Root?

Jul 21, 2009

This is my 6th install of Fedora, begining with Fedora 4 I have had very good luck with all until 9 and I lost all data on drive by my bad clicks in a frustrated session. Now I have a great install of Fedora 10 with the exception that I fouled up and typed in a user (myself-'andybill') and am finding out that the work I need to do cannot be maximized by operating in user - andybill, I need to be super user. I have just moved and have not done any collaboration with our senior partner in a data development start up that he is the intellectual property in deed and law. For me to get back on track my using this OS I have to be master of all libraries, drivers etc. I am a nu-b (only 2 1/2 years, with no computer science background. This explains why I need step by step commands without abbriviated lingo-So if I can remove myself as andybill, make all root

Slackware :: Root User Can Not Change The Ownership Of A Hard Drive?

Apr 22, 2010

I have Slackware 12.2 installed on my computer, as well as a Windows Xp. I have a hard drive named '/fat-d', which is formatted to be 'fat' and is normally used under XP. This drive can also be accessed under Slackware, both as root and the normal user.I can not write to the directory '/fat-d' when I am not root, it is normal since 'ls -l' shows that its owner is root and other users have no permission to write. The problem is that, when I tried (as root) to change the owner to the normal user:# chown [normal_user_name] /fat-dI got an error: chown: changing ownership of '/fat-d/':Operation not permittedBut how can the root have no permission to change the owner?

Fedora :: Wrong Drive Formatted - Recover Lost Data?

Oct 30, 2009

I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

General :: TaskWarrior: Lost 'pending.data' Due To Full Drive

Aug 5, 2011

I didn't realize my system drive had filled up... and TaskWarrior overwrote my 'pending.data' with a 0-byte copy. d-: I had worked SO hard to get all my tasks imported from various other notes (many of which I deleted along the way), and hadn't yet prepared for the possibility of data loss. Should've set it up to use my Dropbox...why doesn't TaskWarrior make ANY backup buy default? That data is so important, and yet so small and trivial to backup. Anyway, my 'undo.data' is totally intact and seems to contain all the information theoretically needed to reconstruct 'pending.data'. Unfortunately right now I have no sample 'pending.data' to look at. d-: OR: does anybody know of a simple Linux utility I can use to recover previous file versions? It's possible no data was overwritten, since the replacement is empty.

Fedora Installation :: F13 User Lost After Creation - Automatic Login

Sep 28, 2010

I have a windows 7 ultimate host machine, installed oracle virtual box on it. Made a iso image to boot fr fedora. All this is fine when the installation is complete, it asks for reboot. Reboot done. Then I went to terminal. Did a SU - root to get into the root. Then I did a firstboot command to enter information. I created a user for myself and at the end rebooted the virtual box.

When it starts up, it does not show my user. It just shows "Automatic Login" and it logs in as Live System User. Even if I try to switch user then it gave me a authentication failure when I enter the credentials of the user which I created. If I try to create users manually using system administration, the user is lost after reboot. I have tried all possible steps...as instructed on the net.

Software :: Acct Sa Only Shows Only Root No User Data?

Feb 21, 2010

I just did a clean install of suse 11.2. I then installed acct, using yast2.Finally I did:sudo /sbin/chkconfig psacct onsudo /etc/init.d/psacct startSo far so good. The problem is that if I now do:sudo /usr/sbin/sa I only see root processes. None of the user processes seem to show up. If I run it with -m flag, I just see a total and a root row, no users show up at all. But I do have user accounts on the machine, and I am working in one of them (only root when necessary).Any ideas why, or what to do about it? Is there something else that has to be configured?As I understand it, sa -m should show a summary for all users, not just for root.I want to be able to see how much time different users are using.

General :: Change The Root Directory For A User?

Oct 5, 2010

For a user on a Linux host, I need to make everything inaccessible besides his home directory. I have heard that this is usually done by changing the root directory for the user (and setting it to the user's home directory), however I couldn't find the way to do it.

I thought about the chroot command, but it seems it just runs the specified command, considering the specified directory as the root directory. So it seems chroot is not what i need. So my question is: what is the command which changes the user's root directory?

May 12, 2010

I was a regular Windows user and have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 2 days back. Not really sure what was my mistake during installation but that had erased all my data. I lost windows completely and lost all my data in all 4 drives including drives itself.I searched in internet and forums as how could I recover my data, and got solution to use test disk. Testdisk worked perfectly, I recovered my 4 drives and retrieved data for 2 of my drives. But I still cann't retrive my important data from other drives.I guess data still exists in hard disk. (no free space , and no data)I know there could be several threads which had solved this kind of problem.

General :: Unable To Change System Time As Non-Root User

May 6, 2011

I need to edit the system time as a not-root user. I am carrying out the following actions in my program.

1. Read the User Id of the process. User_ID= getuid()
2. Printing Capabilities(Permitted, Efffective, Inheritable)of the process
3. Setting UID = 0, using setuid(0)
4. Calling the prctl(), function to keep capabilities
5.Switching the UID from root to User_ID of the process
6. What we have now is a process with root capabilities as a non root user
7. On printing Permitted, Effective, Inheritable capabilities, I get the following
--> Permitted = 0xfffffeff = Effective
Inheritable = 0x0; with UID = 1001;
8. I then try and set the system time with --> system("date -s 10:00");
9. I get an error: date: cannot set date: Operation not permitted
10. I am unable to understand as to why I cannot set the time even thought the capability bit CAP_SYS_TIME in the Permitted and Effective sets are SET.

And when I right clicked on my cd drive icon and looked into permissios, it said: "The permissions of "CD DRIVE" could not be determined. The open with tab was blank, so I selected "Rythmbox" and thought that would fix it, but it's still not doing any thing after inserting cd. Ubuntu :: Lost Data During Dual Boot Installation With Backtrack + 10.04 Netbook?

Dec 28, 2010

Generally I am used to installations of dual boot on different partitions(the traditional method) any windows OS with any ubuntu OS.I tried that with backtrack 4 and Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition! I had previously installed ubuntu 10.04 and then had an extra partition that had data in it.Went ahead to boot with the backtrack 4 disk BUT it did not give me an option for installing them side-by side so i did it manually by editing the partition with the partitioner! I had 2 swamp spaces one i which was initially there for Ubuntu and the other i created! Then simply formated ine partition with EXT3 and mountpoint of / which made two of them!after installation, the grub shows that there is another OS but when it does not load!
