View 1 Replies View Relatedi have to say that i'm not too familiar with Ubuntu... or Linux in general . I've installed it once, just to test it out but I didn't know how to use it so i just reinstalled windows. The other night, i was bored and decided i wanted to re-try Ubuntu and to my suprise, i found Wubi. I love ubuntu now and i made the decision to permanently switch over to ubuntu.
At first, my wireless wasn't working, but there was a quick fix. All i had to do was go to the Synaptic Package Manager, Reload, and search for "Broadcom." I installed the Broadcom STA Wireless driver and i was online within a couple of minutes. I then played around for a couple of hours before turning my laptop off. But, this morning, when i turned it back on...I coudlnt' connect. When i click the little connection icon in the top right, i see the message "Wireless is disabled".
There is a key on my computer that turns the wireless card on or off, and i have tried it. It doesn't work. I have reinstalled the broadcom driver and it doesn't work. I've rebooted...And it doesn't work. I don't know enough about linux to get a solution and every other solution i find on the internet doesn't work.
I have seen in other threads that you guys usually ask for a a couple of things from the user. ifconfig and the sudo lshw -C network so i have included them below. I also looked into the ubuntu help documentation and it told me to do the lspci command.

ok basically i have a new dell inspiron n5010 with a broadcom 4313 wifi card. it doesnt work with ubuntu studio 10.10. I have the drivers all installed and it works on ethernet with the broadcom STA proprietry driver. if i disable this driver the eth doesnt work. but the driver shows its working (screenshot-1).
There is no pop up or anything in the task bar for detected wifi. i open the network settings and it shows up with a wifi option but i have to go into properties and manually type in what i have "the_den_meribel". which didn't work. (screenshot-2).
i have tried the other driver broadcom-sta-common and that doesnt make it work either. screenshot-3. i did try to install the "lp-pphhy" or whatever it is (seacrh for firmware-b43 in synaptic).

i can use internet in my Laptop. My laptop is only connected with wireless. No cable connection avilable here. Wireless is functioning well in windows 7 but in openSuSe 11.2 it is not functioning. This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.
The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.
My laptop is currently running on Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a 320 GB HDD, which I have partitioned as follows. C: Drive as Windows 40 GB capacity and successively partitioned the rest of the drives for 50 GB capacity and left an unallocated space of 67 GB for fedora 13 x64 installation. The problem that I am facing is, that I am unable to install fedora on this unallocated space..even though I am checking the option for "Creating custom Layout". When I check the option for "Creating Custom Layout" Ive been shown with the only option to install fedora on the unused space on the HDD which is around 265 GB. I am also attaching a screen shot of my disk management. how I can install Fedora on this unallocated space of 67 GB?

I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. Everything was working great and I had wireless up and running. However, I tried to set up tethering to my iphone and after that my wireless hasn't been working (I've noticed no other problems). View 4 Replies View Relatedthis is shan and i'm using a dell n5010 recently i installed ubuntu9.10 in my laptop and it doesn't seem to detect wireless connections, so, i googled it and downloaded a driver from broadcom and tried to install it as per the authors instructions and nothing seems to work well, the broadcom drivers are not detected in the additional drivers and when i try to install linux-wlan-ng tarballs it doesn't seem to work even, though i have gcc(i think thats it), so, i installed my windows driver through nsdgtk but it says that it is "unable to see if hardware is present" but, when i click ok on the error the wireless network applet says the hardware is present and when i click the network configuration tool it gives the error message "could not find a network configuration tool" and after configuring my network with network tools in administration it says "no wireless extensions" when i type 'iwconfig' and there is no ip address when i type "ipconfig".

I have an old dell inspiron 700 that I want to turn into a home file server. I have installed ubuntu 7.10 and after a huge amount of google work got all my hardware in line. Then I realised that I should have installed 10.10 So I downloaded and burnt the new ISO and tried to install it. The install does not recognize my Xircom RealPort Ethernet card but that is okay, 7.10 didn't either and I got it working post install. But 10.10 can't detect the pci hard drive. I have tried various things but since I am not that familiar with linux I am just stabbing in the dark.
What bios settings should I be aiming for? What boot options should I set and how? Why are the russians being such kill joys over the discovery of fossilized meteorites?
I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop. My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.

I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.
