Fedora :: Merged Two FAT32 Partitions - Grub Broken?

I decided to merge them into one partition so I did this with cfdisk by deleting them creating and creating 1 large fat32 partition with the free space. When I boot my machine I am presented with:

I used the fedora cd to "rescue a broken system" and everything seems fine? I didn't touch any partition besides my extra fat32 partitions and my /boot partition is bootable. How do I tell this minimalistic grub to use my normal grub.conf?

Jun 28, 2010I purchased a new HD and my goal is to have a Windows partition, an Ubuntu partition, (a swap partition of course), and large fat32 partition for storing data to be used on both the Windows and the Ubuntu side.
I am installing from USB and do not yet have a copy of Windows to install. I keep getting an error saying that the attempt to mount vfat failed.
Ubuntu :: 10.04 Clean Install Causes Grub Unknown FileSystem
May 7, 2010I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and during the upgrade it asked to install a new version of grub or keep the current one. Thinking that I should just upgrade the grub just to make sure that I had the latest version I decided to do it. So I told it the partitions to use the ubuntu, ubuntu swap, vista, and vista recovery.Finished the upgrade and restarted.I tried to boot into both the vista, and vista recovery but I noticed something weird. Grub switched the names, the actual vista install is called recovery, and when you tried to load it, a blinking cursor would appear for a split second and then loop back to grub. If you tried to select the vista recovery now called vista it would just sit at the blinking cursor for infinity. But booting into ubuntu worked.
So I decided to wipe ubuntu and do a fresh install of 10.04. Went through and set up the swap and ext4 partitions at the end of the hard drive(because I would like to expand the windows directory should I ever be able to boot into it). Now when I start up and select vista recovery now called vista it sits at the blinking cursor just as before.

Nov 23, 2010I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error: Unknown Filesystem After Upgrade To 11.04
May 2, 2011I tried upgrading to 11.04 this morning and after rebooting grub left me at the grub rescue> prompt with the message 'error: unknown filesystem'. I've tried purging and reinstalling grub using a live-cd but no joy.

May 25, 2011I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 lts on three of my schools old computers, they are all old Celeron computers, all basically exactly the same, it installed flawlessly on the first one but on the second after restarting after fresh instillation it boots to an error saying "unknown filesystem, grub rescue>" I've reinstalled 3 times, I've looked for others with the same problem but they are all related to dual booting with windows, I wiped windows, there is mow windows involved

Now all of a sudden when I turn on my computer I get a grub error message with a command prompt. I've tried following the direction to restore grub but I'm getting stuck right away on the command to mount my ubuntu partition. After I type "sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mnt", I keep getting the error message "mount: you must specify the filesystem type."

Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.
Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.
I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.

May 18, 2011I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Mar 27, 2010I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.
Fedora Installation :: Grub Won't Load After F10 Install?
Oct 22, 2009After I do a fresh install of Fedora 10 and reboot the computer, nothing happens. All I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. It's like Grub is messed up and won't load. Grub is installed on the Master Boot Record of the drive I need to boot from.
I have an ASUS P4C800 motherboard with one SATA drive that Fedora 10 is installed on. I also have a HighPoint RocketRaid 1740 SATA RAID controller card. When I take the RocketRaid card out, everything boots like normal, but when it is installed all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. I need the RocketRaid card because it houses my RAID5 array with all my documents. The reason I got the RocketRaid card is because it has linux support and my motherboard was listed on their compatibility chart. I had this exact same setup running Windows XP and everything worked fine. I did not load any drivers for the RocketRaid card and was going to do that after the system was setup. I don't know if that is the problem since the installer does not see the raid array on the RocketRaid during install. I was thinking that maybe Grub is seeing another disk and doesn't know what to do and sits there with a blinking cursor.
I don't know where to go from here and I am a linux newbie. On a side note. If anyone knows of a good linux book (specifically Fedora), please let me know.

So I did, but then as soon as it tries to load the grub menu, it gives me the following error: no such device: 2cb414b7-7620-48a9-93af-f03aec3495e4How do I restore grub and make it work? Right now I am using the livecd to type this. I do not really need the grub loader since I am only running one OS, which is currently fedora. I recently had Ubuntu 10.04 which did not have grub (at least it is not shown during the boot) and suited me more than fine.

Dec 24, 2009im still relatively new to linux and fedora, and i was wondering if it would be possible to install another distro on an external hard disk and keep fedora's grub. i tried this once before but the following things happened: (fedora is on my internal hard disk) the installation to the external hard drive went well, and i set the boot partition to C: because thats the first partition however when i unplugged my external hard drive, and proceeded to boot into fedora, nothing happened. my bios screen flashed and then a blank screen with a cursor. is there anyway to keep Fedora's grub where it is and just install another linux distro without that said distro's grub and add that distro to the grub list in fedora manually? or even boot to my external from the bios itself (because mine can do that)

May 23, 2010My laptop came with a hidden partition for restoring Vista instead of an install disk. I installed Ubuntu 9.04, which had an "Advanced" option that allowed me to install grub in the Ubuntu partition without writing over the MBR. Then I used EasyBCD to add Ubuntu to the Vista boot loader. I wanted to do this so that I can still restore the factory copy of Vista from the hidden partition if I need to. I upgraded the Ubuntu to 9.10, still using grub. When I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 it went to grub2, and I haven't figured out how to boot into it with EasyBCD yet.But I would like to try Fedora anyway. I will wait a couple of days and get 13.

Sep 1, 2011I had Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed to dual-boot using the GRUB loader installed by Kubuntu. I mistakenly formatted the Kununtu partition to NTFS in an attempt to install Windows XP in its place without updating grub to pull the files from my Ubuntu partition.
Now, when I go to boot the computer, I receive a the "error: unknown filesystem" and the grub rescue prompts for commands. I've attempted to boot from both a Ubuntu Live CD and a Secured Ubuntu CD with boot repair built into it, but receive the same message both times. I know this isn't an issue with my boot order (I've changed that), and my computer will boot into a Windows XP setup disc (which will not proceed for a different reason)

Fedora Installation :: 15 Post Install Boot - Computer Hangs Before Grub Loads
Jun 5, 2011I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

Jan 27, 2010Have been running 11.1 on a generic notebook (eRacks) just fine until a few days ago when CUPS couldn't be reached. Rather than futz more with 11.1, I decided to install 11.2 (which has been on my desktop). Using the same CD, which continues to check ok, the install has failed many times at about the same point: 87% through "copying root filesystem" in yast2.
Specs: Intel P4 2.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI radeon PV250Lf
The HD was partitioned into /, swap, /home, and an extended partition of /opt, /var, /usr. Only / was ext4 and the rest were ext3. Tried various options:
* no apic
* no acpi
* "noapic acpi=off" entered manually
* Vesa instead of 1024x768
Each time had to edit partition table to mount the extended partitions. Always formatted /. At first didn't format the extended patitions, later formated all but /home. Then set yast2 to format / as ext3, to match the other partitions. In the sysinfo page the / partition is now shown as /mnt containing 723.6 MB out of 7 GB, still formatted as ext4. On rescan by yast2 partition manager, / shows as ext3. The install halts every time with an error while "copying root filesystem." Tried booting from the CD direct to install and to the Live OS followed by install--same result. So, hours later, went back to 11.1--which installed in minutes.

Mar 17, 2011Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
