Fedora :: Merged Two FAT32 Partitions - Grub Broken?

I have 2 fat32 partitions that I use for things that I share between windows and fedora
I decided to merge them into one partition so I did this with cfdisk by deleting them creating and creating 1 large fat32 partition with the free space. When I boot my machine I am presented with:
grub>
I used the fedora cd to "rescue a broken system" and everything seems fine? I didn't touch any partition besides my extra fat32 partitions and my /boot partition is bootable. How do I tell this minimalistic grub to use my normal grub.conf?

I have 13.1 as a dual boot with xp on a 40G hd. There is a 500G hd where I keep all my files, in ntfs format, and I have usb sticks in fat32 and ntfs. When I installed 13.1 I chose read and write access for all users for all of these media. 13.1 will read from them, but will not write to them. How can I fix this?

I have just recovered my desktop Ubuntu system, thanks to SuperGrub, and Larryfroot, who pointed me to it. It had crashed due to an incomplete install to a pen drive, but prior to this I had made some changes to my partition layout, and now if such moves could cause the problems I'm having now.I wanted to be able to access my pictures, music, and projects while testing different Linux distros from CD or pen drive (DreamLinux looks much like the Mac interface, which I like, it's rated for speed, gotta try), but I've not been able to do that from any which I've tried yet. I learned somewhere that replacing the unused bulk of the OS partition with a big FAT32, and moving your files to that drive should make them accessible to most systems. I just viewed my files from the DreamLinux distro CD, so it seems to be working. I knew the action on this type of partition would be slower, and it really is when I move files to it, so is there a better way to get what I want than this?I have since had the following annoyances from Ubuntu's Nautilus file browser, and am wondering if the drive changes had anything to do with the following:
1. I am getting error messages when I try to move files to this drive through the Nautilus GUI file browser, but then these errors are wierdly negated when the file transfer is performed anyway. Well, I should be happy that it does what I ask, but where are these false error messages coming from?
2. It gets even more strange - when viewing files on Fat32 through Nautilus, in my Ubuntu hard drive partition, the file window has a banner which states "These files are on a Picture CD". Huh??? I know where I moved my files to, and they are not on CD! What is a "Picture CD" anyway?
Can anyone find a logical explanation for these weird messages, or does it look as much to you like corruption damage?

I have a mounting rack in which I try to plug in various HDDs. Now, all of them have vfat. Blkid returns something like:
/dev/sda7: UUID="4B16-F1E8" TYPE="vfat" The UUID looks abnormally short to me. I found no way to obtain a longer, typical UUID, and when I set Yast2 partitioner to mount by UUID, it sees and it successfully uses the short UUID. Yast2 even adds it to /etc/fstab like this: UUID=4B16-F1E8 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 However, this short UUID is useless in /etc/fstab. It doesn't work at boot time and it doesn't work when I try to mount manually. xxxxx:~ # mount /windows/C mount: special device UUID=4B16-F1E8 does not exist. Also, one cannot find these short UUIDs in /dev/disk/by-id/.
For a billion reasons, I really want to mount these FAT32 partitions by UUID. Do I have any way to do it?

I had tried many distros over the years but settled on Ubuntu for the last two or three, unfortunately the new version of Ubuntu (Natty) has prompted me to make the change again. To keep access to all my Ubuntu docs e.t.c. I installed Fedora 14 on a seperate partition and hey presto, there's the Ubuntu partition for me to read from, problem is that my laptop still just boots straight into Fedora, this is ok on my laptop but I wanted to make the switch on my desktop as well which has the wife's Windows partition on it, not being able to boot into that would cause eruptions! The problem is that Fedora hasn't installed a Grub menu.
On advice I typed this:-
[eric@Eric-Fedora ~]$ grub-install -v
and got:-
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)

I am preparing for RHCE. While doing the lab I renamed /etc/grub/grub.conf as grub1.conf. Now (obviously) system boots on grub> prompt. Can I recover without using a bootable CD? Another problem that I encountered was, while doing lab for fdisk, I used command umount -al. Now, fdisk -l is not listing the partitions but giving a message:- /proc/partitions does not exist. If I reboot the system this is restored.

My harddisk had one extended partition, sda2, split into several logical partitions: da6,sda5,sda7,sda8,sda9 in this order. sda6,sda8,sda9 were [the only] PVs in one [and only] volume group.
I tried to delete sda7 and to resize sda5 (both unrelated to the LVM setup) to take the freed space. I entered both changes in GParted and clicked 'apply'. It gave some error, but had apparently deleted sda7, without resizing sda5. I tried to resize sda5 again, it again gave an error again, but sda5 was resized. I did not save any logs from GParted. Then I saw that the partition names had changed to sda8,sda5,sda6,sda7, in this order.
Now when I run 'vgdisplay', I get the error "Couldn't find device with uuid ....". Running 'blkid' gives the uuids of sda5,sda7,sda9. According to GParted and fdisk, sda9 does not exist. Also, according to blkid, the uuid of sda7 is what used to be the uuid of sda8. I am very confused. As you could expect, I don't have backups, so... (I am now creating a copy of the whole disk, in case things go even more wrong)

On my system nearly all subfolders of my home-directory are on another hard drive. I included them via /etc/fstab as shown in the example below:
UUID=12c12565-ece4-4a22-b5c5-275aba1a3fd4 /media/data ext4 defaults 0 2
/media/data/archive /home/XXX/archive none bind 0 0
etc.

I have done something very studpid I think and was wondering if there's any chance to recovery a folder. I, for some stupid reason, merged a symbolic link with the actual folder, Thought I was doing something else.Now the directory does not seem to exist and when I click on it there is an error saying 'The link '/directory/' is broken'

What's the easiest way of formatting SD cards to FAT32 in Fedora linux?
Also, I'm having trouble when I try to unmount the volume of a SD card, there's 0.8 GB being used that I expect to be cleared when I choose to 'empty trash', everytime I select 'unmount volume' the SD card window just shuts down instead of clearing that space.

had set up Ubuntu 10.04 the way I wanted it. I had it set up like this:80 GB Drive:39 GB Ubuntu41 GB NTFS for a later windows install)It was all good. I then created a slipstreamed windows install cd, for installing windows (I have the key, so its legal.) I created the slipstreamed CD because the old one was broken. I rebooted the computer and started the windows install. But unfortunantly I have two CD/DVD drives, and it installed from the broken CD. (freezes during install prosses)Now, I am stuck with broken windows AND no grub to boot into Ubuntu.How do I format the NTFS partition from the Ubuntu live CD for a clean install?

I converted one of my old iPod touches into a external harddrive, and i wouldnt mind a small tuorial on how to format my Ipod(USB) to FAT32? I'm on a netbook, and i want to delete Fedora and install BAckTrack instead. and without a CD/DVD drive or really much free money, i gotta use my iPod to do this.

The computer I'm using is a Dell Vostro 1000. If you need any specific stats, let me know and I'll post them, but I don't have access to anything that will list them.
As of this afternoon, Grub will not longer boot. I don't know what prompted it; the only change I made was to the power management settings and installing IcedTea. It brings me to "BusyBox" after saying "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg." Then it brings me to some command prompt that doesn't respond to most bash commands I know, and it says "(initramfs)."
I had that problem two or three weeks ago after Fedora broke Grub, but I fixed it by using "grub-install" in an Ubuntu LiveCD. (No easy task to find what command I needed to use, though.)
But, now the LiveCD won't load. It hangs on the splash screen that just says "Ubuntu" with the dots underneath that indicate it's loading. This exact same disk (and I've reburned it, of course) worked fine when I had to clean up the mess that Fedora made. I tried switching to a terminal at the point where it hangs and there are no messages at all.
I already tried using acpi = off and burning the disk at the slowest speed (from two different computers).
I tried with the Mepis LiveCD, but the GUI just shows a blank screen. I can run commands using Alt+F2, and the cursor is visible, but that's it. I can switch to a terminal, but I can barely use grub-install at all as it is, and I can't figure out how to mount a drive through the command line.
An older version of a Sabayon Linux LiveCD works fine, but, unfortunately, doesn't do anything useful. I haven't tried Knoppix because it never worked on this computer.
If there are any other distros that I can use to run grub-install (preferably lightweight; I'm getting impatient downloading so many 700 mb iso files), I'm open to suggestion. Those are just the ones that I'm familiar with already.

I have a dual booted system - windoze and f12 (64bit). I try to have all partitions mounted in fedora so have edited my fstab. This has been successful for my ntfs partitions but on boot fat32 is not a recognized filing system? Fortunately I don't need the partition but would be good to know how to label it?

I have some files and directories (some mixed case, and some all uppercase) that I have copied on a FAT32 USB stick, and when I load this on FC11 all the files and directories that have/are less then 8 characters (ie that fit into the 8.3 format) all go to lowercase.

when booting I can only acces a broken GRUB and this is how I might have done it wrong. I installed Ubuntu the first time using dual-booting which I think is the worst way since it could be done better by using a Virtual Machine such as Parralels or VMware. Well later I noticed that after removing Ubuntu there was still 2 problems 1.when selecting a OS during startup When I select "Windows" it goes to a broken GRUB which displays something like this " Use tab to complete the first commands" GRUB><where you're suppose to type> and I can't type so I hard reboot it. 2. I could not get rid of LinuxSwap. Much later I removed LinuxSwap by booting in a Ubuntu live disk and then removing the partition as well as the Linux "/" and after booting to Mac OS X leopard disk0s1 the Mac OS X system partition was mounted which was bad since it was suppose to be invisible to even the root user unless viewed by terminal on any user.
Now later I reformatted it as "Mac OS X something extended" and at first it was unjointed and impossible to mount and after I reformatted it it appeared as disk0s3. Now the problem appeared.This is the stuff I can do1. I can type some commands in the GRUB but when I typed find / the output is something like can't find /2. I might be able to boot up a live disk however my Linux Ubuntu live disk is broken.3. this is my dad's second hand Mac G5 iSight, not mine and it was a bargain, it was cheaper than my iPad with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5#

Ubuntu 10.10 latest kernel 2.6.35-28.49 update is broken. update just stalls when it gets to this.Quote:

I installed ubuntu on my internal hard disk I experienced a problem with Grub and I just formatted all the Ubuntu Partitions and convert their format to NTFS to restore my windows (I have a backup) but now despite of I format all the Ubuntu's partitions but in the boot time, the grub exist and the grub apear I want to know where does grub exist? I've using win7 and 9.10 for a few months now. Today I decided to install yet another OS, but during installation a new grub was written to the mbr. Result: I can no longer boot Ubuntu.This is what my menu.lst looks like
