Fedora Installation :: Will 13 Allow To Install Grub In Its Own Partition Without Writing Over The MBR

My laptop came with a hidden partition for restoring Vista instead of an install disk. I installed Ubuntu 9.04, which had an "Advanced" option that allowed me to install grub in the Ubuntu partition without writing over the MBR. Then I used EasyBCD to add Ubuntu to the Vista boot loader. I wanted to do this so that I can still restore the factory copy of Vista from the hidden partition if I need to. I upgraded the Ubuntu to 9.10, still using grub. When I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 it went to grub2, and I haven't figured out how to boot into it with EasyBCD yet.But I would like to try Fedora anyway. I will wait a couple of days and get 13.
1. Which grub does Fedora 13 use?
2. Will Fedora 13 allow me to install grub in its own partition without writing over the MBR?

Trying into install fedora. I am setting up my system as a dual boot over two drives. I have set up a custom layout and whenever I get to the step to write changes to disc it crashes with an unhandled exception. I have tried multiple times now, it always crashes.
Here is the first line from the exception report:

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

I have messed up my partitions really bad and grub refuses to install. Here's how it looks:

Initially there was only Linux (Karmic) on this hdd, on what is now sda2 to sda6, current sda2 being the boot partition. Now, I decided to install Windows XP and using GParted I created an NTFS partition at the end, sda7. But it wanted to have his loader on the first one, so (now this is probably stupid what I did) I cut 100MB from Linux root and put it as NTFS at the beginning, making it sda1, boot and letting windows install it's loader there. I figured I can just reinstall grub on it later (think I have missed some tutorials). As you can probably guess, it won't. I formatted sda1 to ext4 now. What I do is run the Live CD (9.10), use terminal, then do

I partitioned my drive to dual boot with XP, and I also added in a fat32 partition so both Windows and Linux can read/write to there to share files. I now have a problem with permissions (I know that fat32/vfat does not support permissions.) I can as my normal user read/write to this partition, but I want to set-up a CodeBlocks project on there and this is where I run into my permissions error.I can create it and the .cbp file is there ect. but I can not save any work, it will complain ('could not write', or sometimes with 'maybe this drive is write protected'.) I have something like

restore a partition images on another machine to the unused space on my laptop. I'm using netcat and dd to restore the partition.
On laptop:
nc -l 192.168.192.254 9000 | dd bs=1024 conv=notrunc,noerror seek=<some block pos> of=/dev/sda
On W/S:
dd if=part.img bs=1024 | nc 192.168.192.254 9000
The problem is that fdisk -l displays start & end sectors of the partitions and I need to know blocks. How do I determine the block number after the last partition to start writing this image?

Where can I install grub? I know it can be installed to the mbr of a hard drive. I also know it can be installed to a /boot partition. Can I install it to a lvm partition? No matter which ubuntu version at 95% through the install it will complain that grub failed to install.
I'm installing this on an HP XW6600 with hardware raid striped.
I can use the supergrub rescue CD to boot to ubutu after, but whatever I do doesn't seem to get grub installed.
Any ideas on how to proceed? I'm guessing I need to install grub from scratch.

I somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:
Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?

I dualboot Ubuntu and Fedora in one hard drive. Below are the scenario.
First, installed Ubuntu 10.4 on the entire disk (40GiB of size). Then, shrink the Ubuntu installation to equal size to free up space for fedora.
Second, installed Fedora 13 using the option "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout". After the successful installation fdisk -l shows,

I am still using Lucid with a Luks/dm-crypt setup. I picked up an upgrade today that included grub. It gave me a box that had me choose my location to install the upgrade. I chose /boot. When apt did its upgrade thing, I got the following message: Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu ... /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and its use is discouraged.. Installation finished. No error reported. I looked in /boot/grub and found no menu.lst file.

I've rolled a custom version of the live CD, and everything's going great on it.I was asked to make it a bootable USB stick as well.This was simple enough by installing UltraISO on my Windows box and writing the ISO to a USB stick through the 'Bootable' menu. But for some reason it boots up to a slightly less-pretty version of GRUB.That's all well and good, but now the language selection menu is gone. Is there any way to get that menu in the less-pretty GRUB? At the very least, is there a way to hard-code the language there so certain people have sticks with certain languages?

After I do a fresh install of Fedora 10 and reboot the computer, nothing happens. All I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. It's like Grub is messed up and won't load. Grub is installed on the Master Boot Record of the drive I need to boot from.
I have an ASUS P4C800 motherboard with one SATA drive that Fedora 10 is installed on. I also have a HighPoint RocketRaid 1740 SATA RAID controller card. When I take the RocketRaid card out, everything boots like normal, but when it is installed all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. I need the RocketRaid card because it houses my RAID5 array with all my documents. The reason I got the RocketRaid card is because it has linux support and my motherboard was listed on their compatibility chart. I had this exact same setup running Windows XP and everything worked fine. I did not load any drivers for the RocketRaid card and was going to do that after the system was setup. I don't know if that is the problem since the installer does not see the raid array on the RocketRaid during install. I was thinking that maybe Grub is seeing another disk and doesn't know what to do and sits there with a blinking cursor.
I don't know where to go from here and I am a linux newbie. On a side note. If anyone knows of a good linux book (specifically Fedora), please let me know.

I am trying to install fedora on my semi aging PC. It installed fine and prompted me to reboot. So I did, but then as soon as it tries to load the grub menu, it gives me the following error: no such device: 2cb414b7-7620-48a9-93af-f03aec3495e4How do I restore grub and make it work? Right now I am using the livecd to type this. I do not really need the grub loader since I am only running one OS, which is currently fedora. I recently had Ubuntu 10.04 which did not have grub (at least it is not shown during the boot) and suited me more than fine.

I had occasion to boot Ubuntu livecd yesterday on a Dell machine with XP installed. I pressed the Escape key during boot to see what might be happening behind the Graphic ...... and got a rather upsetting surprise ..... ... apparently Ubuntu was reading and writing to the XP partition ..... without any notification to me. I don't have the exact wording to hand, but what is said was that the XP install was 'dirty' and it was fixing it .... fixed! I used a 9.10 CD. Is there any information out there that addresses this behaviour? Is there a way to boot the CD and prevent this from happening? I do not expect or want ANY liveCD to write to ANY partition on ANY PC I might boot using that liveCD without my explicit permission/instruction. That this liveCD did write to a partition without asking or informing me is sufficient cause for me never to use such a liveCD again.

I got an acer aspire 4310 with vista pre installed.
I installed fedora 10 on the D:/ drive by setting the D:// drive as free space within vista and then installed fedora 10. So now I have dual boot vista and fedora using grub.
How can I delete vista and install Fedora 12 on that C:// partition and be able to keep and boot my fedora 10.
Has anyone here done this before?

I have a 1TB WD Caviar green hard disk with Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I used a Gparted live cd to resize the Ubuntu partition and made two ext2 partitions 100GB each. When I tried to install Fedora 11 and told it to install in the free space it told me there wasn't any. I went back and deleted a partition, leaving it as unallocated space. It still wouldn't install! I downloaded Mandriva Linux and it installed in the unallocated space just fine. How do I get Fedora to install?

im still relatively new to linux and fedora, and i was wondering if it would be possible to install another distro on an external hard disk and keep fedora's grub. i tried this once before but the following things happened: (fedora is on my internal hard disk) the installation to the external hard drive went well, and i set the boot partition to C: because thats the first partition however when i unplugged my external hard drive, and proceeded to boot into fedora, nothing happened. my bios screen flashed and then a blank screen with a cursor. is there anyway to keep Fedora's grub where it is and just install another linux distro without that said distro's grub and add that distro to the grub list in fedora manually? or even boot to my external from the bios itself (because mine can do that)

I download F11 x86_64.ISO and burn it into a DVD, but when I boot my machine with EFI to EFI SHELL, I can't find entry to install F11. Who know how to install F11 in EFI shell and on a GPT partition disk? Is there any guide to do this? BTW, I can successfully install win7 x64 from the EFI shell and install win7 on a GPT disk. but there are some problems when I install F11.

since FC1 i install Fedora on a seperate HD on my PC without installing GRUB. I always made a bootdisk and since FC4 a boot CD with mkbootdisk. If i try to make a bootdisk via mkbootdisk --iso --device/tmp/bootdisk.$(uname -r).iso $(uname -r) under Fedora 12 i get a kernel panic if i try to start from this disc:Kernel panic: not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)PID: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 #1Call Trace: then there a some hex values and the message that i should choose a proper root partition. if i start with options linux root=correct_bootpartition i get the same kernel panic with the same message.I found out that it must have something to do with the kernel*.img file. I just installed Fedora on my pc with windows XP pre-installed (dual boot). I had the same setup with ubuntu before with no problems. My ntfs windows partition is of 15 gb approximately and the remaining space that was available for fedora was about 220 GB (non partitioned - I removed all the partitions excepting the windows one using gparted from liveCD prior to beginning installation) ..........after installation etc etc.....my home folder shows me only 150GB of space.....what's happening? Where has all the remaining space gone to?

I just installed win 7 and now can't install fedira 13 on the partition that i made for it on the same drive. The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. I even tried Esc for boot menu, then i select to boot form cd, but it still boots in windows.

I've used ext2ifs drivers to mount my ext3 partition in winxp, but I don't have write acces, it's mounted in a read-only mode, and i didn't check the rad-only box during the installation of the drivers. [URL] It's a straithfoward proces so I dont understand what I did wrong. I'm using fresh xp install with (more or less) all the updates and ubuntu 10.04 Also the partition is mounted at /home, so I dont know if that makes any difference.
