I have a drive... let's say SDA1 On that drive I do a F10 install.
Now I remove the drive and put another drive in and did F11 install on another drive in the SDA1 slot.
Now I put the other first drive in.
Now, F10 is on SDA1 and F11 is on SDB1.
What can I add to FSTAB and GRUB.CONF so I can choose which drive I want to use at boot time?
Some thing quite bad happened to me , i installed debian jessie about 2 month ago. Today I wanted to try what a gnu/linux is like so I installed dragora 2.2 on one of my free partitions , (sda 1 is my debian root , sda2 is my debian home, I had sda4 which nothing was on it so i installed dragora on it. But something bad happened , during boot time you get this page which asks you what distro you want to enter in past I had just one choice and it was debian jessie, I expected after installing dragora I will see 2 distros on this page, but i get just 1 , and that's dragora ... but maybe i should mention this that when entering dragora i can access all my previous files , debian systemfile , debian home , they are still there but i can't enter debian jessie ...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running a dual partitioned (Vista / Fedora 11 x86_64) Intel X25-M Mainstream SSD.
Whilst Vista boots in about 15 seconds, Fedora takes around twice as long; in fact far longer than Fedora 9 on my old Western Digital Raptor drive.
Is this to be expected, or might I have some sort of configuration problem? Has anyone else had similar experiences?
Just migrating to linux but I don't want to give up linux just yet so I've stuck in a 2nd hard drive to install linux on which I've done, now I have windows on one hard drive and linux on the other but my computer boots straight onto linux. I need the option to choose which os to boot into on startup which I've heard GRUB is the best option but I have no idea how to go about setting this up.

When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWith the startup disk creator on Ubuntu (Currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) I realised you could boot Ubuntu from a USB and then install it onto the HDD if you wish to. *Side note* Still amazes me you can run a whole operating system from a USB memory stick drive *End Side note* Now My question is: 'Is it possible to have multiple distros of Linux on a USB memory stick and choose which one you wish to boot from when you boot up the computer?'I was hoping to get a seagate portable HDD ((here) and load quite a few different Linux distros on it to get a broader view of Linux than just Ubuntu (Although Ubuntu does rock ).
Is there simple ways of doing this? I have read around this forum and Google and a suggestion was given to install all of the distros onto the portable HDD/ USB memory stick and then install Ubuntu onto it last as its good for picking up other OSes in its GRUB. (Again if my idea on GRUB and its workings are wrong please point it out - got to keep learning)
I'm testing out 10.04 on one of my partitions, and I love it. I have been using it exclusively for a while now, I have not logged into Windows since! Really don't care about windows anymore!However, yesterday I went to boot into windows... and I noticed the option to choose it is missing from my list! Maybe I'm just not getting to the correct list? The list I get shows like 5 different modes and versions of Ubuntu and something called Windows Recovery (which does nothing), but that's it.
View 9 Replies View Relatedconfigured /etc/sysconfig/vncserver, used vncpasswd as the user im trying to log in as to set passwd, disabled firewalls, set chkconfig --add vncserver but still whenever i try to connect to the vnc server I get "unable to connect to host: Connection refused (10061)". If I run the "vncserver" command as my normal user, I can connect fine then. This really wearing on me, any help is greatly appreciated. It is weird if I try to stop vncserver it says [ok] and then if I try to stop again it says [Failed] but if I check the status of vncserver it says Xvnc is running..
View 8 Replies View RelatedBasically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!
I have installed Fedora10 on my PC which had an XP. Now Fedora waits just 2-3 seconds to press any key to choose between XP and Fedora. Actually if I don't press any key it automatically begins Fedora. How can I increase this time interval?

I have used RedHat/Fedora for quite some time, and always used the standard partitions. Fedora documentation says that LVM (Logical Volume Management) partitions provide a number of advantages over standard partitions. Also, numerous contributors on these forums seem to favor LVMs. In order to make an educated decision I need answers to some questions:
1. What are these advantages that Fedora documentation refers to?
2. Is it easier to work with LVMs than with classic partitions?
3. For those of you who have experienced working with LVM partitions, what were the advantages/disadvantages to working with LVM partitions?
I have a flash drive that I want to mount as my root filesystem at boot time. When I'm in linux, I can run `mount /dev/sda1 /mnt`, and the kernel will mount the ext3 FS on the flash drive at /mnt with no problems. From this I assumed I could boot my system with the kernel option 'root=/dev/sda1', but this doesn't work. My kernel has no initrd, and is booted directly by a bootloader. It has no modules, so I know that's not the issue.
The current setup that works consists of a ramdisk that the bootloader loads into RAM before booting the kernel. The kernel detects this ramdisk and the current kernel root option ('root=/dev/ram') mounts the ramdisk as the root fs with no problems.I can see where the kernel detects the flash driveat startup, and I can't think of a reason why I couldn't just mount it as root. I can copy/paste startup logs here if necessary.
Tried to install Fedora 12 by booting from CD#1 on a Mac G4. First, got a message that video RAM allows only for text installation. OK, but then Anaconda (12.46) just installed some bare-bone software set without any option of package choice! After a longer search I found there`s. no choice for text install! how to configure the net and install things using text mode only (no GNOME present).
I am not smart enough to figure out how to install Fedora 14 correctly. I have an older computer with 2 20gb drives. On the first drive (sda) I have Windows XP, and on the 2nd drive (sdb) I am trying to install Fedora 14. The catch is that I would like to put Grub and the MBR on the first drive so that when the computer boots, it asks whether to load Windows XP or Fedora. I know I have done it with Fedora 13 in the past, but have forgotten how to do it. How to accomplish this in Anaconda for Fedora 14?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis machine has two internal HDDs which are dedicated to Vista (ergh). For various reasons, I elected to use an external drive for the installation of Linux. When I installed Fedora, I didn't have an eSATA cable, so I installed it via USB. if I change the boot device so it boots off the USB drive, the machine apparently remaps the drive to BIOS drive 0. However, when Linux boots, it'll still be considered sdc. So far so good. However, when I plug in the eSATA cable and try to boot Linux that way, the machine will boot off the internal sda because the only available option is "Internal Hard Drive." (And yes, the eSATA is working properly.)
I obviously need to install GRUB on the first drive, and it will then let me choose between Vista and Linux. I've done this kind of thing before on other machines and haven't had to much of a problem. However, running 'grub-install /dev/sda' resulted simply in blowing away my Vista boot loader, and a Grub installation that would hang at a black screen. Which of course then resulted in a plethora of pain trying to fix it with Microsoft's deliberately pathetic engineering.What did I do wrong there? And incidentally, the external hard drive isn't always going to be hooked up, so I don't want to be dependent on it to get into Vista.
I just downloaded the Fedora11 LiveCD and booted it......it boots, but when it starts to load KDE, it takes a very long time, and it never ends. It just keeps on reading from the CD-ROM drive. I can see the GUI is loading, but the loading time is so long that the mouse sometimes freezes. My Config is 512MB of RAM and 2 IDE Hard Disks. Also note that I verified the image with SHA256, and even burnt the CD at two different speeds, one at 48X and the other at 16X. Still nothing. There has also been severe kernel panics on EXT4.

According to my research what I want to do cannot be done. However, i'm sure there must be a way.This is my scenario - I will try to be as accurate as I can be to make it easier for poeple to help. I have a Sony Vaio PCG-141C laptop, the half sized old ones. It has a usb floppy drive that I can boot from. I have also got a usb cd-rom drive but the laptop simply will not boot from it! I have got the F12 cd images downloaded and on a usb hard drive.
I want to boot from a floppy disc, to load F12 from the cd images stored on the usb hard drive. Now with Redhat 9 you could use a floppy drive to do just this. However, F12, does not support it.
Is there a work-around that I could try. I have already tried Smart Boot Manager, but it won't detect the usb cd-rom drive. I have Redhat 9 installed on the laptop, and can mount the usb hard drive from terminal. Could I start the install process from here with the images stored on the external drive??Is there anything I can do, or am I doomed to never get past this.
After going back & forth between win7b & F10 installs, I can't get both to live on the same hard disk for dual booting anymore. win7 complains about fedora's GPT disk being unacceptable for installation. win7 blows away fedora's GPT partitions when it installs. Fedora doesn't recognize win7 partitions when it installs. I can't specify exact partition boundaries with windows even if I know what they are, and I can't seem to find any info how to do it in parted either. I have win7 installed in partition 3 in a known location on disk, but if I reinstall f10 (again), it's going to blow away the win7 boot data on the disk. How do I tell grub where to find the chainloader thingy? Can that still even be used? win7 no longer uses ntldr, and I haven't found an updated procedure for this new boot method.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have a netbook compaq mini with a sata toshiba hard drive.XP was installed on this machine until the hard drive started to have bad blocks.Then i bought a mypassport500go to install f14 on it.It worked but know the sata hard drive is more and more faulty.When i try to boot f14 it displays :acpi : package has zero elements. So i cannot boot.I tryed rescuecd, does not work either.i tryed many kernel params to disable sata at boot but it seems to be builtin.there is no option in the bios to disable the hard drive.
View 8 Replies View Relatedrecently built a F14 x64_86 system on a dual core X64 AMD based box. Later I installed the drive in a dual Xeon dual core box. I have the os set to boot to run level 3 then after I login I run telinit 5 to get to X11-Gnome desktop.However, when I boot the xeon machine I am able to login and run shell commands, such as yum update, fdisk -l etc. But when I try to telinit 5 the process hangs, hitting the power button, the machine goes through it's shutdown script.
I haven't tried transplanting the drive back into the original machine. just to test it's integrity, but I suspect it not corrupted. Not sure this matters, but running it's nvidia's driver for the video card. I think I can also boot to nouveau, but not 100 % sure with out having to deinstall the nvidia binary. both boxes uses the same video card a nvidia 8800 gtfwiw, I can boot my i386 f14 usb thumb drives that have the generic video driver installed.
Just making one last tweak with my fresh install of F12KDE. I need to . How do I do this

OK so here is my problem, i have an OLD P4 2.8 GHZ PC with 512MB ram, last year i was able to burn i believe fedora 9 to a CD and install it on this PC before i removed the drive to use as an external drive. "Dont know where the CD went"
I just recently purchased a 40GB hard drive and am looking to reinstall Fedora 14 on this P4 PC, i want to use this PC as a HTPC just for internet, ..... and stream videos, maybe some internet games etc etc, my problem is my main PC cant burn any cd/dvds due to the Drive's being burned out from burning xbox games at 4x on a regular basis, the PC i want to install Fedora on only accepts CD's and even then it barely reads anything!!
Now that you know my situation i want to know if i can take the 686MB 32bit iso image and put it on a 2GB usb drive and boot/install it to the HD that way on my old P4 PC, i want Fedora 14 as my main desktop, no partitions or walk arounds. If this helps the mobo on that OLD pc with the P4 is a p4vmm2 v5 i believe the p4 is 2.8ghz, ram is 512mb and i was able to install a 64mb nivida card agp 4x over the stock 32mb agp card it came with!
Last year windows xp was sketchy on it, i installed i think Fedora 9 and it ran great, but at that time it was a 120GB maxtor ide, and i decided to use it as an external drive for my main pc to back up alot of goodies, in the end the drive just randomly stopped working and just a few faint clicking sounds before it died. The current hard drive i will be installing on this P4 P4VMM2 mobo is a 40GB Seagate 7200. In the end do you think i can do a HD install from a USB stick with this P4VMM2 MOBO with a 40GB Seagate 7200 HD.
I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.
