Just migrating to linux but I don't want to give up linux just yet so I've stuck in a 2nd hard drive to install linux on which I've done, now I have windows on one hard drive and linux on the other but my computer boots straight onto linux. I need the option to choose which os to boot into on startup which I've heard GRUB is the best option but I have no idea how to go about setting this up.

Really don't care about windows anymore!However, yesterday I went to boot into windows... and I noticed the option to choose it is missing from my list! Maybe I'm just not getting to the correct list? The list I get shows like 5 different modes and versions of Ubuntu and something called Windows Recovery (which does nothing), but that's it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
I'm having an issue with GRUB, I have four OSes on my hard drive. Here they are in the order I installed them:
Windows 7 (Windows bootloader)
Ubuntu (GRUB 1.97)
YLMF OS (GRUB 2)
Debian (Some ancient bootloader)
(For those of you unfamiliar with it, YLMF OS is an Ubuntu-based distro re-skinned to look like Windows XP. Other than the theme and branding it's exactly the same as Ubuntu) Each time I installed another operating system, it replaced my original bootloader with its own. I made the mistake of installing Debian last, thus leaving me "stranded" with an old version of GRUB. Since at the time I was relatively inexperienced with Linux, I solved the problem by reinstalling Ubuntu, which then replaced the bootloader with GRUB 1.97.
I mainly use YLMF OS, and so when I wanted to change some GRUB menu settings (the default entry, timeout, etc.) I naturally changed the /etc/default/grub file in the YLMF OS partition, not the one in Ubuntu. Once I rebooted I realized that my changes weren't being applied for that reason. Thus my problem is that my computer is using the GRUB that Ubuntu installed, not the one YLMF OS came with. How do I change which version of GRUB is used when I boot up? Yes, I could just change the settings in the Ubuntu partition, but YLMF OS came with the newer/est version of GRUB, so I want to use that instead.
I've just created a bootdisk (ssd) with multiples Squasfs images I can choose to boot at the Grub2 menu.No I tried to put the sqfs-images into a ramdisk. Therefore I edited the script '/usr/share/initramfstools/ scripts/ casper'. I used the 'dirty hacks'in the ubuntuforums.org/boottoram howto but I suited them for my needs.Now the Systems stops after the kernel and doesn't find a root system.
The sqfs-image without the modification of the 'casper'-script still boots but doesn't load into ram completely.
First, openSuse 11.4 64bit fresh install, KDE 4.6.0. Clicking on the "Adios" button brings up a window offering the Logout, Turnoff and Restart options. In openSuse 11.3 the Restart option had a drop down menu which allowed one to choose the operating system to restart. This useful feature seems to have disappeared in 11.4. Is there any way in which I can reinstate it?

Today I wanted to try what a gnu/linux is like so I installed dragora 2.2 on one of my free partitions , (sda 1 is my debian root , sda2 is my debian home, I had sda4 which nothing was on it so i installed dragora on it. But something bad happened , during boot time you get this page which asks you what distro you want to enter in past I had just one choice and it was debian jessie, I expected after installing dragora I will see 2 distros on this page, but i get just 1 , and that's dragora ... but maybe i should mention this that when entering dragora i can access all my previous files , debian systemfile , debian home , they are still there but i can't enter debian jessie ...

Now I remove the drive and put another drive in and did F11 install on another drive in the SDA1 slot.
Now I put the other first drive in.
Now, F10 is on SDA1 and F11 is on SDB1.
What can I add to FSTAB and GRUB.CONF so I can choose which drive I want to use at boot time?
With the startup disk creator on Ubuntu (Currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) I realised you could boot Ubuntu from a USB and then install it onto the HDD if you wish to. *Side note* Still amazes me you can run a whole operating system from a USB memory stick drive *End Side note* Now My question is: 'Is it possible to have multiple distros of Linux on a USB memory stick and choose which one you wish to boot from when you boot up the computer?'I was hoping to get a seagate portable HDD ((here) and load quite a few different Linux distros on it to get a broader view of Linux than just Ubuntu (Although Ubuntu does rock ).
Is there simple ways of doing this? I have read around this forum and Google and a suggestion was given to install all of the distros onto the portable HDD/ USB memory stick and then install Ubuntu onto it last as its good for picking up other OSes in its GRUB. (Again if my idea on GRUB and its workings are wrong please point it out - got to keep learning)
I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.
I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.

I know there must be a way to fix this, but cannot find anywhere how to do it.Problem is when I start up machine, it stops at bootloader asking for language "English" and then "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" from screen as if I were running a Live CD or DVD installation.to skip this step so my USB boots normally like a harddrive?

Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.
Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP Media Centre Edition system.On the Step 4 of the installation which usually gives you the option to partition the disk but it only gives me the option to Erase the entire disk or specify partition manually, although this also doesn't allow anything other than totally erasing the disk. I'd ideally like to keep my Windows and I have installed Ubuntu before (but 9.10) on a different system.

But upon restarting, i wasnt give the option to boot ubuntu. It just keeps loading windows. I went back to my bios and chose to boot from both hd's, but nothing is happening. View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering to restore on old laptop to working order. This laptop is an old early 2000's Sony Viao, which I found in the trash. Still powers on, and can boot the latest Ubuntu LiveCD. The issue is that it did not have a harddrive in it, and I really do not want to shell out money for a drive for a laptop this old, but would still like to bring it back into service as a thin client or general purpose web/email terminal. The BIOS does NOT have a USB boot option, and every tutorial I have seen requires that in order to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick (which is what I do have). What I am wondering is, is there any way to just keep the LiveCD in the drive and use that to boot the kernel, etc, and then have it look for the rest of the filesystem on the USB stick?

So I created a partition for it, and install XP onto it, but now it now longer gives me the option to choose between Ubuntu or XP. I know I need to reinstall GRUB but I am not sure on how to do it. I used unetbootin to create my bootable usb with 10.10 for netbook. I am trying to install ubuntu on my brand new fresh out of the box Asus Eee PC 1018P but the problem is when I hit esc during the boot to get to bios to select boot from usb, the usb doesn't show up as an option. I also tried hitting f2 and making it an option to boot from usb but that doesn't seem to work either.

Initially had windows xp in my system. Picked up on free partition (*it was not a primary partition*) and installed Debian from CD. The installation went fine. Towards end of installation the grub install ran detected windows xp presence and I continued with the install. End of install, prompted that the system would reboot.
However on reboot, I wasnt presented when boot option ( windows xp vs debian) but my windows xp directly got booted. How to get this boot option.
