Fedora Installation :: Live CD Stops At Logon Screen?
Nov 2, 2009
Wanting to try F11 out and having an issue straight off the bat (perhaps I should see this as a sign of things to come and stop here!).I grabbed the live cd last night and burnt to cd OK (I'm not a noob at stuff like that); the cd boots as expected and I'm presented with the initial logon screen; I click to log in as Live System User, the "Other..." option vanishes but then nothing happens from there.I've left it for 20 minutes so far

I've been a Linux user for 11 years. I'm not new to the ways of live cd's. I am unable to get past the logon screen in Debian Live.
I have tried "live" for the user name without a password - and with root as a password. NOTHING I've tried works.
Anybody got an idea?

I just tried to install Fedora 13 but after the log on count down I just get a blank screen - nothing else. The disk is still loading but no screen action at all. My graphics card is Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE.

Have recently dual-installed F14 with Windows 7 on an Asus Eee PC 1015P, have been in and out of both systems satisfactorily a number of times. Now the Fedora boot just hangs up at the plain blue "f" screen. I have been prodding around looking at the problem of having no WLAN under Fedora but have not knowingly made any changes. I thought about just doing a re-install but am reluctant to risk messing things up further i.e damaging the Windows until I have Fedora working ok.

In fedora 14, the user order on GNOME login screen is completely different from that in fedora 13. Is there any way to order the users by date of creation ASC, not by name ASC?
Also, it is completely random. This time when I started my computer, my account was listed first. When I started this thread, it was listed last. What's happening?

I'm trying to install v10.10 on my Sony Vaio VGN-NS150J, 4gb ram, 2gb core 2 duo, 320 gb HD...to no avail. The live CD boots, but the dvd drive stops spinning after i click the install button...the one that says i can't turn back. Nothing seems affected by quitting the install. I have no idea what to do except to not turn back to VistaOS. I intensely dislike that "operating system".

I'm kind of new to linux, but even I shouldn't have this much trouble, because I've been reading faqs like crazy and tutorials, but I just don't understand what's going on. I'm installing Linux Mint on my old machine now and it's installing good, but I try to install Fedora 10 and I've been having problems. It works fine in VMware, but when I try to load it from a live CD to install into the drive, on the initizialize process it say's "failed ata something something", then it goes to a bar and then it goes to a black screen and it hangs there. I did 5 md5check sums on the same iso, I'm not sure what's going on?

Im trying to install fedora 11 from the live CD and when i get into the CD meny where it says "boot" and "press tab for boot options" i press enter. then a bunch lines flash across the screen with a lot of error messages. then the fedora loading bar at the bottom loads. hangs for about 1 minute at the very end. then the GMD screen appears. But the GMD screen is all out of place and its patchy as if my graphics card was causing some kind of error

I am completely failing to boot the Fedora 13 i686 live CD (MD5 check OK), in every case after the progress bar at the bottom completes I am presented with a garbled screen. My system has:
Motherboard: Asus MX-M2V
Graphics card: Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 7600 GS
2GB RAM, AMD64 dual core, etc.
Some websurfing this might be a graphics option and I have tried adding different commands to the boot option before the "quiet" namely:
nomodeset nolapic / nomodeset noapic / nomodeset noapci / nomodeset acpi=off / nomodeset xforcevesa
None of which worked. Both Asus and nVidia offer linux drivers for download:

I am using Xubuntu 10.10 64bit . When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. I would like to bypass this screen entirely, and just shutdown reboot from the desktop. Only I use this machine at home ,no none else needs to log on. Is there any way to do this?

I recently downloaded Ubuntu and I have installed the software successfully on a Dell laptop at work, however when I tried to install it in my home laptop it fails the CD runs I get the Ubuntu load screen and then nothing. The CD stops running and I get a blank screen.I think it may be related to the screen driver, is there a way to see what is going on?

How do I get the normal GDM logon dialog that was in F8 - the one with the User field displayed directly, and the drop down menus at the top?
F10 was successful. I changed the pam configuration to allow root logon at the GUI screen.
But this screen is different. All I get is 3 choices in a list: FTP Logon to Web Site, Ghost for Linux, and "Other". I only get the User field if I choose Other, and at that point I also get Sus[pend, Restart, and Shutdown buttons.

I am trying to install fedora 12 on my computer. I have burned the live cd ISO and it works just fine until right before it shows the login screen. I suspect that it may have to do with my ati radeon 9800 graphics card. give me some boot options or some such thing so that I could install fedora on my computer. Also some other specs

Our system is based on RH4 and is using pam_tally and faillog to record failed attempts and to lock users out after 5 attempts. We have a requirement to provide a normal (non-root) user logging onto our system, with information regarding the number of failed logon attempts made on their account before the current successful logon (similar to the functionality provided by HP Protect Tools on Windows). My first idea was to add 'faillog -u $USER' to the bashrc, however by the time the bashrc is run - the user has been successfully authenticated and the faillog has been reset back to zero.

What I want to do is have a screensaver that will activate at the login screen, after a few mins lack of use.
This can obviously be set for individual accounts, but I cannot figure how this can be done for the login screen.

1. I can run the graphical installer at full resolution without using "nomodeset"
2. I can boot into the Gnome desktop using the option "Try without installing" without any problems
3. When I install to my HDD however, I can boot but just at the point where the logon screen should come(after the black screen, blinking cursor), the display reports no signal and goes to sleep. I can hit enter, type my password, hit enter again (blind, as there's no display) and the HDD spins up as if logging in, but I don't see anything.
4. Using "nomodeset" makes no difference whatsoever other than the graphical installer runs at a lower res.
5. using the alternate installer changes nothing
6. recovery mode has the same issues
It appears to me that booting into Gnome without installing uses some sort of generic driver, whereas installing uses a different driver which is sending my display to sleep. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit. Have also tried using 10.04 64Bit and the alternate 10.10 .iso, but to no avail. My graphics card is an NVidia Quadro NVS 295 with a DisplayPort-DVI adapter. I've previously installed 10.04 64Bit on another system with an NVidia GT240 card with no problems whatsoever. I can't try that card in this machine as it's too big for the case chassis, let alone the case.

I remember that in previous Ubuntu releases, it was possible to restart/shutdown at the logon screen via the keyboard. I think it was via the F10 key. Can this function be brought back?

I have found a number of pages describing everything from how to match the splash screen to my desktop background to installing a feature length movie as a splash screen (something like that). These are NOT what I want to do. I simply want to disappear the ugly pink screen and be presented the logon dialog over a blank background.
I suppose I could change the run level, logon at a terminal and startx (if that works in 10.04 - I would not place any bets).

I've recently done a fresh install of 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 5720 and it went pretty well. However I've a problem with the logon appearing twice. If I leave my computer idle for too long the screen locks. when I return I'm asked for my password which unlocks the computer but within a few seconds the screen locks again and I need to enter my password for a second time. This time the computer unlocks and stay unlocks.. but it's annoying I have to unlock it twice !
How can I extend the length of time before it unlocks or disable it all together.. until the problem gets fixed?
