i was working on ubuntu when the machine suddenly shutdown. when i restarted it, i keep getting a sh:grub console instead of the logon screen. dunno what to do.

I've recently installed a new graphic card after my old one started to go belly-up and it works nicely in X with twinview. The card have one VGA, one DVI and one HDMI. I have the monitor connected to the VGA and my projector connected to the DVI. However, when I boot the monitor (VGA) don't receive a signal. It is dead until X comes up (and when X comes up it does exactly what I want, it uses the VGA monitor as the main screen).
I had this setup on my old card to and it worked fine. Grub and boot console showed on both screens and I never had to tweak anything to make it do this.
how to enable the VGA outlet, either have boot enabled or only the VGA enabled (either way is fine by me but I really want to see Grub and the boot console on startup).
My Squeeze installation has the horrific 80x25 line display, and I cannot stand it. I know it can do better, because the grub screen is very tiny. I ran dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, but the offerings there aren't much better. I don't know what happened to the good ol' days of grub when all you had to do was pass vga=791 to the kernel to get a decent console size... but it seems they are gone.
I don't really understand this new v2 grub... I don't know why it was necessary to change how it was configured, when it seemed to work so exquisitely. how I would accomplish the functional equivalent of passing vga=791 (1024x768@75hz) to the kernel in grub
I am using Xubuntu 10.10 64bit . When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. I would like to bypass this screen entirely,and just shutdown reboot from the desktop. Only I use this machine at home ,no none else needs to log on. Is there any way to do this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on an IBM Thinkpad T60, when I try to Logoff, Restart, or Shutdown the system just goes to a black screen and I'm forced to do a hard reset to restart the system. I did a reinstall and things seemed to be working fine until I applied updates and reloaded my package list from my previous install then I got the same conditions as before. I suspect that this my be a result of a bad package or update. What I want to know is if their is a way to display console text of the shutdown process so I can see where the system hangs and possibly remove the problem application. I have an AMD 64 bit desktop running with the same package lists and have no issues I suspect it is a hardware specific issue for the laptop or an error with a 32 bit install.

View 9 Replies View Relatedafter an update i cannot my pc remains in the log on screen. I insert my password then the screen goesn and of and after 4 secondit goes back in the logon screen. I run the following
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-session
and i receive a message that both gnome and applets are not installed.
What I want to do is have a screensaver that will activate at the login screen, after a few mins lack of use.
This can obviously be set for individual accounts, but I cannot figure how this can be done for the login screen.
Installed ubuntu mobile 3 times, once off of a USB, second off of a burned ubuntu netbook cd, third off of a ubuntu 10.10 official cd. all three had the issue. as soon as i log on to ubuntu, all i see is my cursor and the background and nothing else.. tried searching and tried a few suggested things, but to no benefit.. What's next?

2. I can boot into the Gnome desktop using the option "Try without installing" without any problems
3. When I install to my HDD however, I can boot but just at the point where the logon screen should come(after the black screen,blinking cursor), the display reports no signal and goes to sleep. I can hit enter, type my password, hit enter again (blind, as there's no display) and the HDD spins up as if logging in, but I don't see anything.
4. Using "nomodeset" makes no difference whatsoever other than the graphical installer runs at a lower res.
5. using the alternate installer changes nothing
6. recovery mode has the same issues
It appears to me that booting into Gnome without installing uses some sort of generic driver, whereas installing uses a different driver which is sending my display to sleep. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit. Have also tried using 10.04 64Bit and the alternate 10.10 .iso, but to no avail. My graphics card is an NVidia Quadro NVS 295 with a DisplayPort-DVI adapter. I've previously installed 10.04 64Bit on another system with an NVidia GT240 card with no problems whatsoever. I can't try that card in this machine as it's too big for the case chassis, let alone the case.
I remember that in previous Ubuntu releases, it was possible to restart/shutdown at the logon screen via the keyboard. I think it was via the F10 key. Can this function be brought back?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have found a number of pages describing everything from how to match the splash screen to my desktop background to installing a feature length movie as a splash screen (something like that). These are NOT what I want to do. I simply want to disappear the ugly pink screen and be presented the logon dialog over a blank background.
I suppose I could change the run level, logon at a terminal and startx (if that works in 10.04 - I would not place any bets).
Our system is based on RH4 and is using pam_tally and faillog to record failed attempts and to lock users out after 5 attempts. We have a requirement to provide a normal (non-root) user logging onto our system, with information regarding the number of failed logon attempts made on their account before the current successful logon (similar to the functionality provided by HP Protect Tools on Windows). My first idea was to add 'faillog -u $USER' to the bashrc, however by the time the bashrc is run - the user has been successfully authenticated and the faillog has been reset back to zero.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently done a fresh install of 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 5720 and it went pretty well. However I've a problem with the logon appearing twice. If I leave my computer idle for too long the screen locks. when I return I'm asked for my password which unlocks the computer but within a few seconds the screen locks again and I need to enter my password for a second time. This time the computer unlocks and stay unlocks.. but it's annoying I have to unlock it twice !
How can I extend the length of time before it unlocks or disable it all together.. until the problem gets fixed?
A while ago, I was applying the new kernel updates (I guess 2.6.32-24, or the one after it.. well, the latest generic update) and accidentally powered off my laptop. And now it wont come up. It comes to the logon page, and neither the keyboard, nor the mouse work. Cant even switch to the TTYs. When I boot with the recovery mode, I just see a black screen (probably the TTYs dont work) but after "processing" some time, nothing happens. Not sure if the keyboard works, as I cannot turn on/off the capslock switch, but ctrl+alt+del works
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Laptop sony VPCEA22EN. I have installed ubuntu 10.04. it was working fine. Then i installed kubuntu-desktop. it was working fine. i tried to some of bugs using kubuntu update manager. i restarted the laptop.
after that im not able to logon on kubuntu. on kubuntu logon screen i'm unable to enter username n password. Keyboard and mouse is not detected but, usb mouse works.
i tried ctrl+alt+esc, this combination doesnt work while booting. i can't use this combination on log-on screen because keyboard is not detected.
In fedora 14, the user order on GNOME login screen is completely different from that in fedora 13. Is there any way to order the users by date of creation ASC, not by name ASC?
Also, it is completely random. This time when I started my computer, my account was listed first. When I started this thread, it was listed last. What's happening?

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.
I've been working with ubuntu now for quite some time. My computer loads grub fine on a cold state boot. It loads fine on my 3 linux based systems when they restart. It gives me a grub 21 error when I choose restart in windows 7. I'm forced to press the power button, and turn it back on- not a huge deal, as its a 100% fix. I'm already booting with rootnoverify, and have checked the command on boot to make sure it was the right grub menu that was installed. I also couldn't find a topic with a problem like this, most were just grub not working at all after install or similar.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy dad has done something to his comp and it won't boot. it stops on boot up an comes up with some sort of black screen command line. he said its something along the lines of "initramfs" and he can't seem to do anything. We tried booting to the recovery console from the grub menu and gets the same response.
Hes having trouble booting to cd at the moment so I need to know is there some sort of command that will fix or at least give some help that he can type in from this spot.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on hd1 - /dev/sdb1 at the end of the installation I chose to install grub at hd0 - /dev/sda1. The file system I chose was ext4 for ubuntu "/" - 50 GB,
ext3 for "/home" - 5 GB, and 1.5 more for swap. When the installation was complete I got the following prompt:

error: no such disk
grub rescue>

There was nothing I could do, pressing TAB did not show me all the commands like grub is expected to. Typing 'help' did not show any commands as well, instead it showed me - "NO SUCH COMMAND" or something like that (I did not took note of what the output was). I believe the problem is in the grub loader - which was not really installed properly in hd0 - /dev/sda1 (which is FAT32 - windows)
I have a dual boot PC with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.1. The problem did start with Ubuntu 9.04. I think the problem started around the same time I added a Seagate FreeAgent USB hard drive for backups. The GRUB OS list will come up after the PC boots. I can select Vista and it will start w/o a problem. If I try to boot to Ubuntu the PC will restart itself. It may try and start Ubuntu MANY times until it eventually gets started. I have tried to repair the problem with no results so far. I have tried it with and without the Seagate device attached.
