Ubuntu :: Xbuntu Shutdown Screen - Takes To The Logon Screen And Then At The Bottom Right Corner
Mar 24, 2011I am using Xubuntu 10.10 64bit . When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. I would like to bypass this screen entirely,and just shutdown reboot from the desktop. Only I use this machine at home ,no none else needs to log on. Is there any way to do this?

Jun 4, 2011after an update i cannot my pc remains in the log on screen. I insert my password then the screen goesn and of and after 4 secondit goes back in the logon screen. I run the following
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-session
and i receive a message that both gnome and applets are not installed.

This can obviously be set for individual accounts, but I cannot figure how this can be done for the login screen.
Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen After Logon
Feb 1, 2011Installed ubuntu mobile 3 times, once off of a USB, second off of a burned ubuntu netbook cd, third off of a ubuntu 10.10 official cd. all three had the issue. as soon as i log on to ubuntu, all i see is my cursor and the background and nothing else.. tried searching and tried a few suggested things, but to no benefit.. What's next?

Jan 16, 20111. I can run the graphical installer at full resolution without using "nomodeset"
2. I can boot into the Gnome desktop using the option "Try without installing" without any problems
3. When I install to my HDD however, I can boot but just at the point where the logon screen should come(after the black screen,blinking cursor), the display reports no signal and goes to sleep. I can hit enter, type my password, hit enter again (blind, as there's no display) and the HDD spins up as if logging in, but I don't see anything.
4. Using "nomodeset" makes no difference whatsoever other than the graphical installer runs at a lower res.
5. using the alternate installer changes nothing
6. recovery mode has the same issues
It appears to me that booting into Gnome without installing uses some sort of generic driver, whereas installing uses a different driver which is sending my display to sleep. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit. Have also tried using 10.04 64Bit and the alternate 10.10 .iso, but to no avail. My graphics card is an NVidia Quadro NVS 295 with a DisplayPort-DVI adapter. I've previously installed 10.04 64Bit on another system with an NVidia GT240 card with no problems whatsoever. I can't try that card in this machine as it's too big for the case chassis, let alone the case.

These are NOT what I want to do. I simply want to disappear the ugly pink screen and be presented the logon dialog over a blank background.
I suppose I could change the run level, logon at a terminal and startx (if that works in 10.04 - I would not place any bets).

Jan 26, 2010Our system is based on RH4 and is using pam_tally and faillog to record failed attempts and to lock users out after 5 attempts. We have a requirement to provide a normal (non-root) user logging onto our system, with information regarding the number of failed logon attempts made on their account before the current successful logon (similar to the functionality provided by HP Protect Tools on Windows). My first idea was to add 'faillog -u $USER' to the bashrc, however by the time the bashrc is run - the user has been successfully authenticated and the faillog has been reset back to zero.

Jun 1, 2010I've recently done a fresh install of 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 5720 and it went pretty well. However I've a problem with the logon appearing twice. If I leave my computer idle for too long the screen locks. when I return I'm asked for my password which unlocks the computer but within a few seconds the screen locks again and I need to enter my password for a second time. This time the computer unlocks and stay unlocks.. but it's annoying I have to unlock it twice !
How can I extend the length of time before it unlocks or disable it all together.. until the problem gets fixed?

Sep 2, 2010A while ago, I was applying the new kernel updates (I guess 2.6.32-24, or the one after it.. well, the latest generic update) and accidentally powered off my laptop. And now it wont come up. It comes to the logon page, and neither the keyboard, nor the mouse work. Cant even switch to the TTYs. When I boot with the recovery mode, I just see a black screen (probably the TTYs dont work) but after "processing" some time, nothing happens. Not sure if the keyboard works, as I cannot turn on/off the capslock switch, but ctrl+alt+del works

after that im not able to logon on kubuntu. on kubuntu logon screen i'm unable to enter username n password. Keyboard and mouse is not detected but, usb mouse works.
i tried ctrl+alt+esc, this combination doesnt work while booting. i can't use this combination on log-on screen because keyboard is not detected.

Nov 12, 2010I dual boot Ubuntu with Windows, so every time I turn on my computer, I have to choose a system.
I rarely use Windows, but I still need it on here for some applications. Being that I'm going to be using Ubuntu 90% of the time, I was wondering if there was a way to boot directly to Ubuntu without erasing Windows.
Is this possible? I'd want to be able to press a key at start up or something so I can still use Windows if I want to.
If that's not possible, how do I edit the boot screen so instead of 14 seconds (or whatever it is), it boots Ubuntu in one or two seconds?

i checked firefox "about:config" page and dont see anything that looks related to the browser/screen size
i have firebug installed, is there any coding i could edit for of a page to emulate a different size?
or is there a javascript i could install to do this?
changing the actual resolution of my screen isnt an option.

Mar 17, 2011Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

May 11, 2011This all started when I had no sound being detected by my laptop's mic. I also have an external USB sound card and it was not detecting mic sound either. I had previously done recording with Audacity (it could have been back in Ubuntu 8.04).
Now, I had a feeling that I was going to break something trying to get the mic to work. Sure enough, I'm at the point now where I cannot logon to the GUI (gdm).
I made a number of changes before my last reboot.
Here's a summary of what I think is the primary cuase (pulseaudio!):
At one point, I had lost sound altogether (I believe this was a result of having installed pulseaudio Volume control, which someone used to unlock and configure their mic).
So, things were starting to degrade. Being the persistant and stubborn one that I am, I decide to trudge on.
I had read enough suggestions (and desite enough "didn't fix" responses), I decided to try removing pulseuadio altogether. After rebooting, I was not able to log on.
Let me try to describe this logon situation as clearly as possible: When the laptop boots up, it shows the Ubuntu logo with the colored dots below moving from right to left (orange/white).
When I get to the user logon screen, it's not as fancy as it normally is. The logon window which allows me to select the user is a little more basic and the background is a simple black/purple color. The day and time is displayed on the task bar below as well as a power icon with options to suspend, restart and shut down.

I've been unable to find a screenshot of the current state and I don't think I'll be able to post one due to my technologically limited situation.
When I select my user and enter the password, The screen goes blank (or displays what appears to be the console for CTRL+ALT+F1) and then I'm back at the user selection as described above as if I hadn't even tried to log on.
At this point, I'm not positive which distro I'm using, nor which kernel, but survey says:
My laptop is a Pavilion zd8000.
lspci shows I have: VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inv M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]
I'm not sure if this is proper. When I run /etc/init.d/gdm stop, I get: Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service( utility, e.g. service gdm stop.
Probably not, because when I try sudo service gdm stop, it returns: stop: Unkown instance.
OK. Maybe it's OK, because running sudo service gdm start, I returned back to the logon screen. (But, I'll include this because it may indicate something, but I think it may be the way the "service" works now...)
(I do have networking enabled, so I can run apt-get and what not)
I find this interesting. I installed kdm. I started it after stopping gdm (through the service command as noted above). I was able to log on through kdm, but I'm not brought to a desktop, only a black background and a terminal window in the upper-left corner, without any window frames (I can't min/maximize/close). There doesn't appear any way to log out...
I'm not exactly sure where to go from here. I'm getting more interested in a backup/reinstall, but I may not have the ability to do that on hand, so I'd like to try to get things working. At the very least, I'd like to be able to log on and do work. Sound would be nice and a working mic would also be nice, but I can do without either of those two for now.
Most of the solutions I've been able to find in terms of not being able to log on has been a result of:
- Bad usernames/passwords
- Insufficient drive space to allow logon
While I haven't tried creating any new users and logging on with them, I'm confident it wouldn't do any good. df -a shows: /dev/sda1 Available = 6324296. Should be enough for basic operations.
My plan at this point is to start woking on the kdm angle. Since I am able to log on, but only to a terminal window, perhaps I can find some info on why that happens...
