Ubuntu :: Change Root Password - Typing A Password, No Characters Show Up?

Mar 9, 2010

I'm really new to Linux so this will probably sound like a pretty naive question to most users, but how do you change the root password? To install Java, I have to type # su into Terminal, which then asks for the password. What's weird is that when I start typing a password, no characters show up. I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not.I've found a bunch of different sites on the Internet that explain how to change the root password, but none of them seem to work for my specific work station.

I've got Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. In the GRUB boot menu, I can choose to boot normal or in recovery mode (I'm led to believe older versions don't have this option).I've tried typing # sudo passwrd into Terminal, but I already have a root password set up apparently, so I can't change it there.

Ubuntu :: Run A Script That Needs Root Privileges Without Typing In The Password?

Mar 25, 2011

I'm trying to run a script that needs root privileges without typing in the password. I want to copy a file from my documents folder into /etc/X11 to overwrite my xorg.conf. I do this because I will have my computer switch from my monitors to my TV when I watch a movie. But I'd like to be able to make it a clickable icon so I don't have to type in cp /... /etc/...

This is my "script"

Code:

sudo cp /home/nertskull/Documents/xorg.conf_TV /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then I read a lot of places that said to add this to the sudoers file (sudo visudo)

Code:

nertskull ALL = NOPASSWD: /home/nertskull/Documents/switch_TV.sh

I've done all that, and I still get asked for my password when I run that file.

nertskull ALL = ...
%nertskull ALL = ...
%users ALL = ...
%admin ALL = ...

I'm sure it's something simple I'm overlooking, but I've read 5 different threads on this, and I can't find anything they did that I'm not doing. Also, here is my sudoers file, because I know location within the file matters. But what I read said I should be putting my stuff at the end.

Code:

# /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
# See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.

[code]....

OpenSUSE Network :: SSH Client Hangs After Typing Password

Jan 5, 2011

After connecting to any host, the openssh client hangs after I type the password. The strange part is, it only hangs if when I use the wlan card. If I connect my phone to the computer and uses it to connect to my server, it works 100%.

If I use any other computer at the wireless network, it works 100%
If I use putty on the same machine, it works 100%

It is only a problem when I use the build-in wireless card, under openSuSE 11.3, on my Lenovo L512. (note that everything besides ssh works completely).

Ubuntu Installation :: Shutdown - Restart Failure - No Sound And Unable To Mount After Upgrade

Jul 22, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows 7. Yesterday I upgraded from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. After that, pressing the shutdown button and selecting shutdown or restart (whether on the login page or after I've logged in) will only bring me back to the login page. I can shutdown or restart if I do sudo shutdown now, but I'd prefer to use the GUI. Also, there is no sound now (not a big deal, but still not good). And I can't access my storage partition (not the windows7 partition, but a third ntfs partition with data on it). I get the error message that I am unauthorized to mount. I have the only account on this computer, so I should be authorized. This one is a HUGE problem for me, because I need to be able to access my data for work. None of these were problems before the upgrade.

Oh yeah, and quickstart is not enabled. Also, if I go to Power Management, and try to alter what to do when Power Button is pressed, my only option is Ask Me. I know these have been problems/solutions to the shutdown/restart problem in the past.

Is there a way to have the system shut down automatically after a set number of wrong user password entries? Am using ubuntu and kubuntu on two different machines. I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .

Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Finished - Click OK To Reboot It Never Does - Forcing A Shutdown

Sep 20, 2010

I'm having is trying to install ubuntu 10.04, when i get to the end and it asks you to click OK to reboot it never does, it sits there and never reboots (left for an hour!), forcing a shutdown and starting up then results in no GRUB coming up to dual boot (windows 7, installed on a seperate HDD)

This previously worked fine but I got rid of ubuntu to try a different flavour (which didn't install successfully, couldn't find the disk drive I wanted to install it on but I had already wiped ubuntu off for a fresh install)

I have formatted the partition i made (30gb partition) and manually created space for root and a partition from that for a swap file but this made no difference. I have used a partition manager and completely got rid of the partition (resizing the drive back up to full amount) and let the ubuntu installer do the partition itself but again the same problem.

I'm not sure what it is doing at this stage when going to reboot, i'm guessing installing GRUB and terminating the processes for the reboot, which never completes. I have also tried installing GRUB on the partition which said "Windows 7 loader" but that made no difference. I will try fixboot and fixmbr commands in windows recovery console in case it can't overwrite the boot sector for any particular reason tonight.
