Fedora :: Replacing Dead Disk In Lvm?

Jul 4, 2010

I know that this topic has been posted, responded to, and maybe even resolved, many times here, but I am stuck here with partially dead fileserver and need some pointers.

Problem: one disk drive that was part of a logical volume died. I have a replacement, but I can't get it into the LV and get the LV back up again.

pvcreate --uuid <uuid of dead drive> /dev/sdX1, where /dev/sdX1 is the newly created drive and its partition.
vgcfgrestore VolGroup
vgscan VolGroup
vgchange -ay VolGroup
e2fsck /dev/mapper/VolGroup-LogVol

but, e2fsck can't find a superblock. Apparently this drive is the first in the LV sequence, and it is not formatted as part of the LV.

So how to I get this new disk formatted into the LV without reformatting the entire LV and losing what data I still have?

(FWIW: this is on F11)

Hardware :: Replacing Dead Drive In An LVM That Consisted Of 3 Drives

Aug 13, 2010

I have an old computer here running Fedora Core 2 that had 3 hard drives mounted as LVM2.

This is the output from parted for the first disk -

Code:
Using /dev/sda
Information: The operating system thinks the geometry on /dev/sda is
48641/255/63. Therefore, cylinder 1024 ends at 8032.499M.
(parted) print

[Code]....

I can't get the computer to boot without commenting out the volume in fstab, but it won't mount.

Is there any way to view the data on the two working disks?

General :: No Automatic Rebuild Of RAID 5 After Replacing Bad Disk

Dec 12, 2009

I have a 5 disk raid 5 array that is composed of SATA A:0,1; SATA B: 0,1, and SATA C:0, and one of the disks (SATA A:0) recently went bad on me. I have an ICP raid controller that is about 5 years old. I replaced SATA A:0. After rebooting, I went into the controller and verified that it saw the disk in the hard-disk info section...there I noticed that in the "status" section, that the SATA C:0, SATA B:1 disks were listed as being "in array", the SATA A disks were blank, and the SATA B:0 disk was listed as "fragment". When I go into the "repair array" section, the controller tells me that there are no arrays that are in failure, error, or need to be rebuilt.

This puzzles me, as I thought the controller would know that the array needs to be rebuilt after replacing the disk and I don't see a way to initiate a rebuild. If I just let the server boot after replacing the disk, then I get back that there are the correct number of disks in the raid 5 and that it is ready, however, the screen then goes blank and I get a blinking cursor and the system seems to hang. There are no activity lights on any of the drives associated with the raid 5, which makes me think that the system is not rebuilding the array at this point.

Ubuntu Servers :: Does Replacing Failed Disk On Raid5 Change Any Data On Other Disks In Raid

Jan 9, 2011

I've got a raid5 array of 4 disks with ubuntu 8.04 runing on it that is currently still working:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdc
/dev/sdd

Smartmontools for /dev/sdc tell that there are 9 sectors pending for reallocation:

Code:

197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 9
198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 9
And /dev/sdd has increasing number of reallocated sectors (about 1 every couple of minutes):

Code:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 1735
/dev/sdc has failed a coulple of times this week (but I have always sucessfully readded it to raid5) . But the increasing number of reallocated sectores on /dev/sdd concerns me even more.

I'm affraid that during removal of /dev/sdd and adding new /devs/sdd disk, raid might fall appart. That's why I would try to do it in Ubuntu Live CD:If the raid falls appart (/dev/sdc fails) during the readding of new /dev/sdd disk, I might still remove the new /dev/sdd and return the previous one and assemble the raid with:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdd (old one that was previously removed)

Does assembling Raid in Ubuntu Live and adding new disk for /dev/sdd write anything on /dev/sda, /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc in the process of adding /dev/sdd into raid5?

Fedora Installation :: Clarifications Before Replacing FC6 With F10?

May 3, 2009

I have a dual boot configuration now, Windows XP SP3 on the C drive (sda,1 it's a Dell Dimension 4700) and FC 6 on sdb. My goal is to install 10 and be able after installation to boot to either XP or 10. Some of the installation documentation baffles me, so I want clarification before I begin. 1st Question Looking at the screen shots of an installation on the fedora site, the Partition Selection Screen asks What drive would you like to boot this installation from?

Booting an installation? Maybe this meansFrom what drive are you installing? Once 10 is installed, what drive should be the boot drive? From what drive should I boot to install? Would somebody explain the intent of this Partition Screen question? BTW, I will be installing from CDs. 2nd Question: Upgrading Boot Loader I don't understand the Installation Guide, section 8.3 on upgrading vs skipping. I think I got into trouble on this very point going from FC3 to FC6. The boot loader on my Dell must be grub. So, I think I want to upgrade. Perhaps the confusion is that I'm replacing FC6, not upgrading, and upgrade here means only for grub, not for the install.

Fedora :: Replacing Kernel After Hardware Update?

Mar 21, 2010

Just over a year ago I did a main board processor and memory upgrade on my system. I was running Fedora seven i686. If I recall correctly I booted with the install disk and chose "repair existing system" or something like that. Then I typed "rpm -e --nodeps" which removed the existing kernels. Again going from memory I typed "yum install kernel" A new kernel was installed I rebooted and the system ran great.

I have been having sound problems that i can't resolve with Fedora 12 i686. The sound card drivers are not always loaded at bootup. I have posted here several times about this problem and i may have messed things up a bit with various attempts at repairing. I am wondering if removing and reinstalling the kernel as I did at the time of the upgrade might help.

Are the commands I listed correct? It's been a long time. I found the instructions on this forum but can't find them again.

Apr 7, 2009

I just installed Cable internet in my apartment. Part of the deal was a free Router (a Belkin). I read somewhere, that you can replace the firmware of the Linksys WRT54G Router/Switch with a Linux-based firmware.

I want to try this, but I have some concerns. I'm worried about losing my WPA2 Encryption, and connection problems; I have two Linux laptops (Ubuntu, and Fedora 64 bit) which connect Wirelessly, a desktop w/ 64 Bit Fedora 10, and two Vista Desktops that connect via Ethernet. Fedora :: F13 - Nxserver - Service Is Dead

Quote:

When I look the Services panel, nxserver is listed but shows as "Service is Dead". Does this mean anything specifically? Could it be related to firewall or security issues? Right above it a related program to nxserver, nxsensor, is listed and it's shown as operational.

Same thing here in my Services panel. Just getting into using NX...the display seems near Win RDP quality over the home lan. I'm now trying to get the sound to work. What is this 'dummy output' in my Sound preferences and where did my sound cards go? I have one onboard sc and a PCI card, neither recognized via the NX client session. Looking to get ESD going which might be the issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Replacing Fedora 13 With 10.04 On Dual-boot With Win7

Oct 5, 2010

I installed Fedora13 to dualboot w/ my windows 7. I quickly found out that I don't care for fedora. I was referred to Ubuntu, and put Ubuntu 10.04 on in VirtualBox. Lo and behold, I like Ubuntu a WHOLE lot more! So, I promptly went to Disk Manager (in win7) and deleted the Fedora partitions (told you i'm a noob). Of course that was a poor choice, and I was only able to get my computer to boot again by reinstalling f13. neat.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[code]....

SO what i was thinking is go back to Disk Manager, delete partitions sda 3,4, & 5 (the linux ones), then reboot from the Ubuntu live disk? But I don't know what the sdb1 partition is?

Fedora Networking :: Samba NMB - Dead After A Reboot

Feb 8, 2009

I've got a problem with samba and the nmb service. My system boots in Gnome

Ive set up Samba and it works ok, untill I reboot, then I have to go into services and restart Nmb service. the services bit says its dead after a reboot, its running on run levels 2345 I had a few hicups setting it up took me a couple of days to figure out the fire wall and SElinus were blocking things, so I ticked all the samba things - and it works a whole lot better.

I have to admit its a whole lot more polished than last time I tried linux - Red Hat 5. I like the Yum installer it takes a lot of guess work out for us novices, one thing I would like is to be able to edit and open things as root in Gnome or just log into it as root so that you can set things up, but I'll save that question for another day.

Fedora :: Service Dead But Subsys Locked

Aug 8, 2011

I have cloned linux installation from USB drive to another. The system is Fedora core and it is used as a software for encoding live stream (it's using PCI encoding cards). The system works well on original hardware configuration, however when I use this cloned flash drive on another hardware configuration one service will not start. It is a "calld" service and it is a service which has a protection which limits its execution to original hardware platform only (mac authentication probably). I need to get this service up, so when I type command "service calld starts/tatus" or "etc/init.d/calld start" I get response "service is dead and subsystems are locked". I tried matching mac address to original hardware configuration but still the same. This is a config file of service /etc/init.d/calld

#!/bin/bash
#
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/calld
#
# Starts the calld
#
# chkconfig: 345 44 56
# description: xxxxxx
# processname: calld

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: calld
# Required-Start: $syslog $local_fs
# Required-Stop: $syslog $local_fs
# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop: 0 1 6
# Short-Description: start and stop calld
# Description: xxxxxx
### END INIT INFO
# Source function library.....

I wonder is it possible to get it up by changing its configuration.

Fedora Installation :: 10 Headless Install With Dead AGP Socket

Mar 9, 2009

I find myself in the strange position of having an old P4 system that I want to throw Fedora 10 on - it's a considerable upgrade from the old 866Mhz P3 that I've been using to do some number crunching on. (It's a personal project, but it's CPU intensive, so the P4 is a welcome upgrade.) My problem with it is that the motherboard's AGP socket is dead, and I can't find a PCI graphics card, so I'm trying to do a totally headless install - I have no idea what errors may be shown, if any. All I know is that whatever I've tried up till now hasn't worked.

1. Remove the hard drive from the P4, stick it into a spare, semi working system (AMD Athlon, RAM isn't working too well), install F10 on the hard drive, remove the drive, put it back into the P4, and let it boot. Results: Nothing. No DHCP announcement, so I don't know if it's done anything.

2. Try a variation of a PXE boot using the vnc parameter. I've copied the instructions here with no luck. Tried it using a nearby mirror (mirror.nus.edu.sg) as well as method=cdrom, with no luck on either. Results: Also nothing.Should I give up on this, or is there anything else I should try?

Fedora Servers :: Nmb Dead But Pid File Exists - At Shutdown?

Mar 11, 2009

After booting I noticed that sometimes nmb was not running. The command # service nmb status gives nmbd dead but pid file exists The timestamp of the pid file suggests that at the last shutdown the pid file was not removed, and I guess this prevented nmb to start properly during booting (Although during booting the messages is [OK]).

If I shut down nmb manually, everything is fine. I checked the log in /var/log/samba/log.nmbd and it doesn't show any error. As mentioned, this occurs only occasionally, and I have no idea what may be causing this.

Fedora :: F12 Wine32 - Dead Applications Menu Entries

Jan 12, 2010

I'm a comparative newbie, especially with using WINE. I installed it through the F12 package installer. I then found that the Applications menu entries were inoperative. Just plain dead. I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling. No improvement. Tried again from terminal using yum no change. The only way I've got anything to work is if I run from terminal as root. I know that if the .wine directory is created with root it may only work with root. I've tried deleting that directory, but I'm not sure I succeeded. I don't see the .wine directory but nothing runs with a non-root login.

When I do see errors, they are mostly that the program can't be found in a WINE "DOS" directory. I did get two MS Office apps installed (as test cases) but, again, F12 menu items don't work and I can only run them as root. I think internet access is cut off as well (can't get them to activate). I guess my overall question is: How do I install WINE in F12 such that the menu items work for non-root logins? If there's already a guide, wiki or FAQ, I'd be happy to know where it is.

Fedora :: Data Recovery From Drive On Dead FC4 System

Jun 26, 2009

I have Fedora Core 4 PPTP server (poptop) that died (motherboard). I am setting up a replacement system but need to get the data off of the drive from the dead FC4 system. They are just plain text config files. So I removed the drive and mounted it to another system using a USB enclosure. But I can't mount of the root partition, only the boot partition. I have done some Googling and see that the reason is that the / partition is an LVM format. But of course the replacement system already has a /dev/logvol..... type of partition defined. So how can I mount the LVM partition from the dead system on the new system to get the data? Understanding this will be valuable for similar situations in the future.
