Ubuntu :: Backing Up A Folder On A Dead Installation

I recently had ubuntu as my main operating system on my computer, but that wasn't working out because iTunes just does not work on ubuntu. So I started to try to dual boot windows XP, but when I tried to create the partition, all of them crapped out on me, so now I'm left with a computer boot anything, it just goes straight to error loading operating system. Now I can't get the one folder that I need off of the ubuntu installation because I don't have permission too.

In my computer with Ubuntu 9.10 the battery backing CMOS memory is dead (and replacing it is not an option). This requires from me to set up RTC time in BIOS each time I turn on computer (default date is from couple years back). When I don't set time, Ubuntu don't want to startup and it shows me fallowing message :
/dev/sdb1 : Superblock last mount time (Tue .... 2011, now = Mon ...200 is in the future.
/dev/sdb1 : UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck Manually.
mountall: fsck / [842] terminated with status 4
mountall: Filesystem has errors: /

Mount of filesystem failed.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
Is there any way to run Ubuntu without having RTC time set over, and over again in BIOS ? (It's acceptable for me not to have current time).

I recently installed Ubuntu Karmic on my netbook (I tried netbook remix but preferred the look of the regular desktop edition). When during installation, the option to encrypt the home folder appeared, and being mildly paranoid I thought, "sure, why not?" (I must warn you that I am a new user with little technical knowledge other than what I have managed to gather in a semi-passive manner over the past couple of months). The problem is, I (try to) backup my data weekly, and so today I gave it a shot (I got the desktop edition a week ago). I have encountered the following problem.
I backup my system following (approximately) the instructions at [URL] for Backup The exact command I enter at backup is:
sudo tar -cvpjf 2010.02.13.tar.bz2 --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/sys --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/media --exclude=/home/dan/music /
(I exclude my music folder as it is huge and I already have it all in several other locations) When I executed this command all ran smoothly for a while, however it soon began backing up the directory /home/.ecryptfs/dan/.Private At this point, it started backing up the huge number of files in this directory. I assume these are encryption keys? Forgive my ignorance... Anyway, it took several hours going through this folder, and finally bzip gave up, complaining of excessive file size:
bzip2: I/O or other error, bailing out. Possible reason follows.
bzip2: File too large
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)
I assume that excluding the encryption keys and such from the backup would be a bad idea: I guess that if I did not restore the relevant directories along with my home folder, it would be inaccessible? Is there a way to avoid backing up such a large amount of data?

My hard drive is failing. And I need to backup my home folder but I cant boot into the drive because it makes noises and stops. But I can get to it in the 10.04 live cd. But many files I cant access because I dont have the permissions. How can I get the required permissions to back it up then restore it on a fresh install?

I backed up a windows xp folder which was My documents to an ext4 formated external hard drive from an ubuntu 10.04 live cd. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 on that same computer, I tried to open the my document folder then i was denied access to it because i was the wrong user. In windows xp, the My documents folder was not password protected. Is there any way to hack that folder, I have a bunch of pictures in there that I want to retrieve. On the folder icon, it shows and x and a lock. I think it means that is either encrypted or password protected.

I am trying to find out the best way to setup my new quad core PC. My thoughts were to use Windows 7 64bit for games and ubuntu 10.04 64bit for everything else eg, movies,photos,music, docs etc, email and web browsing backup ubuntu fully and backup an image of windows or backup both systems fully.There are several ways to do this from the googling i have done, but unsure what is the best method Option
1) Install windows, install ubuntu by partition hardrive - standard easy process.
2) Install windows, install vmware player 3, install ubuntu -URL...
3) Install windows on one hardrive and install ubuntu on another hardrive - have not been able to find a tutorial for 10.04 yet
All of the above options i have no idea how to backup both systems.My reasoning for wanting ubuntu is because of my bad experience with windows( viruses, malware, and operating system getting slower over time). Seeing that my PC will be used by all of my family, i do not want them to use windows if possible. If a dual boot system was to be used, master would be Ubuntu and slave windows, ie when my family turns on PC ubuntu loads.

So im trying to backup my computer, and I understand the easiest and maybe best way is just through an external hard drive. Mine is 1 terabyte. Ive organized my folders by just putting everything into my documents. But when I hook up my external hard drive, and I try to drag and drop, even through explorer, or copy and paste the folder, it just creates a shortcut. Then, if I bring it to another computer and open that file it just goes to the my documents of that computer, so it's obviously useless. I know this is extremely basic but I know I should do it prior to dual boot just in case.

I have been using Ubuntu for three years and haven't had a problem upgrading until Karmic Koala, it broke my system twice, not fataly, though.I am currently using Jaunty and wish to upgrade to Lynx. My question is, "Can and how do I backup my current installed software so that I can install it on to Lynx withoug having to install each program again?" Would Clonezilla do this? I am not a technical user but I have learned how to use the command line so I would be willing to go that route as well as a GUI application.

Did an upgrade today from 9.04 to 9.10. As far as I can tell, everything is working, with the exception of Firefox 3.5.6 with new install. I've attempted an uninstall and install. Tried the following with 3.5.6:URL...I finally found that if I use sudo (or gksudo) I can run firefox at the command prompt. Any other time I run it, it just shows an icon on the lower bar and then it disappears, but within the system monitor it shows Firefox and will show as many as you run the icon with.
I've deleted the entire .mozilla directory, and manually removed all the firefox info fro /usr/bin also before a reinstall. I assume it is either a strange permission issue or some link related issue."which firefox" shows:/usr/bin/firefox and the 3.5.6 files are located /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.6 . Any help would be great, I'm at a loss at this point. I'm sure it's something simple, but it's a royal PITA.I have nxserver on the machine, if that means anything and there was a session locally as well as one remote during the upgrade (using the same account).

I've got a toshiba A135 series. I installed 9.10 from a live cd, and the installation process went fine.
When I rebooted the computer, it loaded up giving me the option to select one of the following:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory text (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
I chose the first one, hit enter and the computer went to a black screen with the cursor up in the top left corner blinking away. Then nothing. I've read that this distribution is giving folks a lot of trouble. Has anyone had this same thing happen to them after a clean install?

I just installed Windows 7, so my grub is gone. I was wondering if there is a way to use a live cd to boot into my ubuntu partition. I'm likely going to scrap my ubuntu partition soon, so I don't want to mess with installing grub.

I clicked "everything is OK", and accepted the settings and then everything went black ...
Then I have restarted X, logged again, still nothin' ... all black .... windows and action is present, but I can't see anything ...

I'm having trouble with dead keys in Emacs on Ubuntu Lucid and I'm at my wits' end. Using a standard Norwegian keyboard layout, and dead keys work fine in all Gnome applications. But Emacs just spits out messages about undefined keybindings when I use dead key combinations, for instance for tilde (~): "<dead_tilde> is undefined". This is super-annoying, since I use Emacs a lot, and I need some way to fix this.
What I've tried so far: Loading the 'iso-transl' library in Emacs seemingly makes the dead keys work, but it's not consistent across modes (works for plain text, though), and I didn't need to do this before. Also, loading this breaks Emacs' latin-1-prefix input method, for some reason. Fiddling with keyboard-preferences, iBus, im-switch xim/none/ibus, etc. Removing ~/.xinput.d directory. Fiddling with various environment variables: GTK_IM_METHOD, GTK_IM_MODULES, XMODIFIERS
Of course, I'm testing this in Emacs started with '-Q' to elminiate problems that might be caused by my own rather extensive set of initialization files. Using dead keys in Emacs has never been a problem until I upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid.

I am trying to run Ubuntu 9.10 from a USB drive on an old laptop with a dead hard disk.An added complication is that it does not support USB boot, only CD boot.So with the help of URL..., I am running grub from a cd and then booting the kernel from the USB (or something like that).
The problem is that after I do this, I get about 6 minutes of error messages as the kernel tries unsuccessfully to read my dead hard disk ("buffer I/O error on /dev/fd0" or something like that). I can post again if the specific error message would be useful. (But it takes so long to reboot that i'd rather not). I can tell it is trying to access my hard disk as I hear the disk occasionally spinning (it intermittently spins and does not spin). After many failures, the system successfully boots and runs from the USB drive.I tried removing the hard disk from the machine entirely, but this triggers an ASPI error and the kernel hangs.So ideally I would like to modify the kernel command line above to instruct it to ignore the hard disk. I read some kernel documentation but it proved a little bit too advanced for me.

Since I started using Fedora 10 I can't login as root. Even though the system recognizes the root password when it requires it for certain administrative tasks it refuses to let me login as root.
When I try to edit httpd.conf I get the message "could not save file..." it doesn't even prompt me for the root password. My httpd service is dead and I can't resurrect it, what should I do?

I find myself in the strange position of having an old P4 system that I want to throw Fedora 10 on - it's a considerable upgrade from the old 866Mhz P3 that I've been using to do some number crunching on. (It's a personal project, but it's CPU intensive, so the P4 is a welcome upgrade.) My problem with it is that the motherboard's AGP socket is dead, and I can't find a PCI graphics card, so I'm trying to do a totally headless install - I have no idea what errors may be shown, if any. All I know is that whatever I've tried up till now hasn't worked.
1. Remove the hard drive from the P4, stick it into a spare, semi working system (AMD Athlon, RAM isn't working too well), install F10 on the hard drive, remove the drive, put it back into the P4, and let it boot. Results: Nothing. No DHCP announcement, so I don't know if it's done anything.
2. Try a variation of a PXE boot using the vnc parameter. I've copied the instructions here with no luck. Tried it using a nearby mirror (mirror.nus.edu.sg) as well as method=cdrom, with no luck on either. Results: Also nothing.Should I give up on this, or is there anything else I should try?

I downloaded one of the businesscard isos and booted up, but have run into the problem that my usb keyboard is dead in the installer. It works in setting up my bios, and has always worked before, but I cannot choose any items on the installation menu. I found a bug report that seems to be this issue, but it said that this would be fixed when debian moves to the 2.6.32 kernel on the installer.

I have a dell inspiron 530 desktop with core 2 quad and 4GB memory, running 32bit vista and 64 bit fedora 10. I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. Is there a way to revive the computer?

My Dell Latitude D820 had lenny installed and working fine. I did not have anything exotic installed (other than perhaps nividia drivers). I went about upgrading to squeeze following the notes/documentation on the debian web site. During this process it mentioned that the following firmware was not going to be installed (as it is not freeware; BTW I had non-free in my sources.list):

tigon/tg3.bin
On reboot it was clear that the new kernel was not in a healthy state. Even when booting with older kernels I had serious stability issues. After about half a dozen reboots trying to resolve problems I was experiencing the laptop would not even load the Dell splash screen on power up. I could not even navigate into the BIOS. Nothing appeared on the monitor (or external monitor).
I put an ISO disk in the DVD drive to see if it would boot from the DVD; it seems to load but absolutely nothing appeared on the screen. I tried navigating the grub menu (not displayed) and load my windows partition. When it booted to the point where windows would normally display the GUI it flashed several times and displayed a 'BSOD' with the following message:
*** Hardware Malfunction.
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***
It looks like my laptop is now FUBAR. It is out of warranty so any fix is likely to be DIY. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Recently I did a dist-upgrade to 9.10, figured my sound and video problem of the live CD may have been fixed as i last tried on the last Beta.It has been working (mostly) for the last few days, i say mostly as it likes to disable my wifi quite frequently and only editing a blacklist file fixes it.Today i have booted and got to my Grub menu, then i get a black screen for a while before getting a message about the /dev/disk/by-uuid/f49b68fd-a095-402c-a068-82a6b40f2aed does not exist. Then it dumps me to a Busybox shell and leaves me with a (initramfs) prompt.Can anyone tell me what on earth is going on, the disks have not been changed by me (via fdisk or anything) and it has already fired up into 9.10 a couple of times in the last few days.

Today I tried installing 4 known working servers (which were running CentOS) with Debian 6 (x86 and x64). They are all of the same brand.After installing (which went fine) I rebooted the first server: the BIOS POST hangs at 78% and was not going any further. Powercycle again, CMOS wipe by removing the battery of the motherboard, replacing cables, reseating components, and so on. After rebooting the second server: same issue. POST hangs at 78%. As I can't get into the BIOS setup or PXE boot/USB boot I'm really wondering whats going on. All 4 servers are now "wrecked" in this way. I used the Debian netinstall image, and installed from various sources, like the surfnet and leaseweb mirror.Anybody any ideas about this? Does Debian 6 do anything firmware related during install?

I've been putting my DVDs onto my home network for a while without any probelms until now.When I put in Doubt and try to rip it, the title tree (in both K9 and DVD::Rip) shows several titles of a large filesize and the same time duration (that of the film). About three of the multiple titles are exactly the same file size and duration and then there are about 3 more that differ slightly in both.
I think this must be some kind of anti-piracy measure. Obviously 6 files of 5 GBs wouldn't fit on a DVD so it must be some kind of error/trick. When I try to backup the DVD it doesn't work. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I've got a lot of photos, home movies, documents, etc on my machine (currently running with ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64) and i've had issues in the past with hard drives failing. fortunately i've not lost anything substantial as all the important stuff was recovered from backups i had made with blank DVDs.my last desktop rebuild was about 2 years ago and i decided that using blank DVDs to back things up was no longer practical as they're too small and the amount of data i need to backup is too large.hard drive storage used to be quite expensive but they're getting cheaper and cheaper all the time. i bought 2 pretty large, identical drives for($70) each.my machine has 3 hard drives in it. the first is a small solid state drive with the operating system on it, the second has all my data on it (mount point is /data) and a third to backup the stuff i don't want to lose (mount point is /backup).i use the following script to automatically make another copy of all the stuff i want to backup onto a second drive.

this is automatically run at 9pm every night as a root cron job.the 2 lines that begin with "rsynch" do the actual work of backing up my data. the 2 lines that begin with "chown" are just for convenience. they change the owner of the backup log to myself so i can easily delete them without being hindered by ownership issues (the script is run as ROOT so the logs are created, and therefore owned by ROOT).i originally used this article to help set it up in the first place.it explains the process with a good degree of clarity and i can recommend it to anyone who would like more info on this technique.i'm not too worried about losing my system as all the configuration files in the home directory are backed up.it doesn't take too much effort to rebuild the system but it's the personal data that is much harder to replace.
if the data drives fails i will be able to replace it and restore the data from the backup drive. if the backup fails i can just throw it away and make another backup. this whole strategy is designed to guard against a total drive failure. it offers no protection against accidental deletion of files except for the small window between the deletion and when the script is run (anything deleted from the data is also deleted from the backup the next time the script is run).i've only really experienced hard drive failiure 3 or 4 times.the last time the computer started doing all sorts of wierd stuff and i didn't understand the issues involved.
