Fedora Installation :: Install 13 From Cd - Only Installs Disk 1?

Jun 3, 2010

I am trying to install Fedora 13 on a new system from CD. DISK 1 runs but terminates without using disks 2-5. There is a system I can access as 'root' but I was not prompted to create a unique user or which packages should be installed. How do I complete the process?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Installs On Wrong Disk And Overwrites Win 7 Mbr (more Than Once)

May 20, 2010

I recently bought a new Gateway desktop. I use mostly Ubuntu but like to boot into Windows once in a while. Have used Ubuntu as my main OS for about 3 to 4 years, dual booting. After the Ubuntu 10.04 release, I decided to throw in another hard drive into the new computer and make it dual boot.

Mistakes:

1. I did not create the Gateway Recovery Disk in Windows before installing Ubuntu.

2. Installed Ubuntu 10.04 without disconnecting the Windows 7 drive.

3. The Ubuntu install never prompted me asking where to install Grub (apparently there is an advanced menu somewhere in the install process that lets you select), and it was installed to the first drive on the PC by default, which happened to be the Win 7 drive.

This left the Windows 7 unbootable because it did not appear in the Grub menu. I did some searching and managed to install Grub on the second drive (the one with the Ubuntu install) and also managed to add Windows 7 to the Grub menu so I could boot into Windows. This last procedure added the Windows 7 option to the Grub on both drives.

I then managed to fix the Windows 7 mbr using /fixmbr and /fixboot. The problems I still have are as following. I can't create the Windows Gateway Recovery Disk in Windows. Every time I try, I get a message telling me "Hard drive configuration is not set to the factory default. Restore aborted.". I already disconnected the Ubuntu drive but get the same results. I know this one is not a Linux issue, but maybe someone had a similar issue and might be able to help.

The next problem I have is that it looks like after the las Kernel update in Ubuntu, Grub overwrote the Windows 7 mbr again. Is there a setting file somewhere that now tells Ubuntu that Grub is installed in two places and that whenever there is an update it updates both? Can I change this? I really would like to avoid re-installing Ubuntu to fix this.

Fedora Installation :: Installing On New Disk But Killed Old Install Of Fc8 On Another Disk

Mar 15, 2009

I have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?

Fedora Installation :: 11 Only Installs From 1st CD In Text Mode?

Aug 27, 2009

I tried installing Fedora 11 on my i386 using the 6 CD set that I downloaded. Since my system has only 128M of RAM, the text install mode was used. The 1st CD installation seemed to work OK. After 181 out of 181 packages were installed, the system rebooted and did not ask for me to insert the other CDs. now when my system comes up, it is always in text mode.

Q. Is there a command I can use to have the remaining CD's installed so I can install the graphics system?

Ubuntu Servers :: Grub Always Installs On 'first' Bios Disk?

Apr 9, 2010

I was installing Ubuntu 9.04 64bit server from the CD on a machine that I normally run ESXi on. I wanted to test disk speed on a direct install vs. the install in ESXi, so I installed a 4th hard disk, shutdown ESXi, and installed Ubuntu directly on the new disk (4th Bios disk - SCSI:3 or sdd). When I tried to boot from this disk, nothing happened. I rebooted from the ESXi install disk (SCSI:2 or sdc), all was fine. Playing around, I finally found that to boot the ubuntu install, i had to boot from SCSI:0 - Grub had installed there, even though I never indicated that disk for anything during the install. It would be much better if Grub ASKED where it should be install, rather than assuming.

Fedora Installation :: Creating Local Repo For HTTP / FTP Installs

Jul 15, 2009

I'm having trouble installing Fedora 11 using the URL method. When I put in a F11 netinstall CD, or even Disc 1, I press tab on the first option and add "askmethod" to the end of the text. Each time I point the installer to my local FTP and press enter after typing in the FTP url, the installer just hangs there. I've even tried deleting ALL the files from the F11 folder on my FTP server and downloaded ALL the files at:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/

Still...the same thing.
When I pointed the installer to:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/
Everything worked fine, albeit slow as it was DL from the NCSU FTP server.
Am I doing something wrong with my FTP server? It is anon, so there is no authentication issues.

Fedora Installation :: Disk Needs To Be Initialized On V13 Install?

Jun 15, 2010

I am trying to upgrade from version 11 to v13. I have tried using preinstall as well as 2 live CDs (gnome and KDE). In all cases, I get a message saying that the HD which contains FC11 needs to be reinitialized.
My most recent attempt was to upgrade using the preinstall. Upon reboot, Grub still shows the old (v11) and I can boot that with no problem. If I choose the upgrade option, it fails!

Failure message: Error processing drive /dev/sdc
Hitachi HDT 72101 (1TB)
The device may have to be reinitialized
device details: pci-0000:00:1f.2-scsi-1:0:1:0

The drive (sdc) contains several other flavors of Linux and they all run fine. FC11 also runs from that drive with no problem.

Took 3 days to find another machine to download and burn the FC12x64 disk. So I booted via the FC12x64 disk and selected the 1st option to install/upgrade. I thought it is upgrade and so choose replace my existing linux system however it wiped out everything on the disk. I have some important data in my home directory. I think it is in LVM, not a partition like /dev/sda1. How can I recover them? Was using stock settings.

Fedora Installation :: Disk Boot Failure After Fresh Install From Live CD.12?

Feb 15, 2010

I've run the install to hard drive program three times over and each time I get "disk boot failure". I believe I've got Grub to install to the mbr but I am not sure.

System:
Barton 3200+ with 1GB of DDR1
Asus A7V333
High Point hard disk controller

other items

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.

The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.

The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.

Server :: New Server Installs Require Whole Hard Disk?

I have decided to try to run a web server, with a view to possibly, eventually, hosting my own website. To test the water I downloaded ClearOS and SME Server with a view to installing on a spare partition and trying them out. But, both installers seem to require the whole HDD to install into. Both installers have a warning saying that all partitions and drives attached to the PC will be erased in order to 'initialise' the HDD.

I must've installed 100 linux distros and i've never seen this before, including CentOS 5.5, which ClearOS is based on.Why is this the case? Is there any way I can install alongside another linux installation?? I have tried vbox but it doesn't offer a proper sandbox really as there is only one NIC.

Debian :: Fresh 5.0 Install And 'upgrade' Installs Exim?

Feb 2, 2011

After logging into a fresh Debian 5.0 (lenny) install from a VPS (virtual private server) provider, I run 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get upgrade' in attempt to get all the security updates, assuming that's what said commands do. Along the way exim (exim4) and possibly other programs (not confirmed) gets installed and is setup to run on bootup...despite it not being installed previously. Why is this? I would expect that either 1) previously uninstalled pkgs are not installed with the 'upgrade," or 2) if 'upgrade' essentially performing a "install everything that's not already installed" maneuver, I wonder why it's not installing a LOT more packages (then just the view I see installed on my system during the 'upgrade.')

Separately: can someone confirm an 'apt-get update' followed by apt-get upgrade' on a fresh Debian 5.0 install system will basically upgrade to 5.0.8 ("current rev level" for lenny)?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installs On 133/266mhz FSB But Not 166/333

Feb 25, 2010

I have tried many things but none of which seem to work.

Motherboard : N2PAP-LITE
Processor : AMD SEMPRON 2800+ (32 Bit)
Stock FSB Settings : 166/333MHz
Chipset : NVIDIA NFORCE2

This is a really odd problem. It installs under 133/266MHz and runs fine. When it's at 133/266 it reconizes it as AMD ATHLON XP in the BIOS and the Linux Installation. I want to be able to install it using 166/333MHz which is the stock setting of the processor! When I set it to that in the BIOS it reconizes as a AMD SEMPRON 2800+ but will not install Ubuntu 9.10.

This is the error I get if I try to run it from the CD, Install it, or boot from the current installation which I installed it with 133/266MHz. If anyone can please help me figure this out it would be great, im trying to use it as a server and would not like to bottleneck it as it shouldn't be. I get these errors

Code:

check_bugs+0xbb/0xe9
start_kernel+0x2dc/0x2ec
? unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x1ab
i386_start_kernel+0x7c/0x83

Now if you want the whole error list I will type it up.This is a link for the motherboard manual.
