Server :: New Server Installs Require Whole Hard Disk?

Sep 1, 2010

I have decided to try to run a web server, with a view to possibly, eventually, hosting my own website. To test the water I downloaded ClearOS and SME Server with a view to installing on a spare partition and trying them out. But, both installers seem to require the whole HDD to install into. Both installers have a warning saying that all partitions and drives attached to the PC will be erased in order to 'initialise' the HDD.

I must've installed 100 linux distros and i've never seen this before, including CentOS 5.5, which ClearOS is based on.Why is this the case? Is there any way I can install alongside another linux installation?? I have tried vbox but it doesn't offer a proper sandbox really as there is only one NIC.

Server :: Can't Run Script After Hard Disk Was Filled

Dec 13, 2010

I have a MythTV backend setup with videos also transcoded to a directory for streaming to my Roku frontend. A week ago, the backend had an issue that caused the hard disk to fill up, which borked a bunch of things up. I've since repaired the damage (and learned a lot about log size settings for logrotate.d). Anyway, my last problem is that a script I wrote to compare the files in the transcoded directory to the MythTV base directory and delete files no longer relevent doesn't work anymore. I get the following error when run by any user, including root:

Code:
bash: ./roku-autoexpire.sh: /bin/bash: bad interpreter: Permission denied

The script worked fine before the hard disk fill, but now I can't seem to get it to work. Both the original MythTV partition and the streaming partition are XFS. Here's the pertinent lines from fstab:

Code:
/dev/sdb1 /var/www/mythroku xfs defaults,auto,grpid,exec,user 0 0
/dev/sdc1 /mnt/mythtv xfs defaults,exec,user 0 0
Permissions for the directories are the following:
Code:
drwxrwxr-x 2 mythtv mythtv 16384 2010-12-13 19:21 /var/www/mythroku
drwxrwxr-x 2 mythtv mythtv 20K 2010-12-13 20:13 /mnt/mythtv

I tried fiddling with the mount options for the partition, but that didn't seem to solve the problem.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Hard Disk Crash / Data Recovery In RAID1 Webhosting Server

Feb 1, 2011

We have had a hardisk crash in our RAID1 webhosting server running CentOS5 and Plesk. We first realized something was wrong when our main site didn't load but showed MySQL errors. We then found out that the system was in read-only state. Something that also happened the day before yesterday, but we could fix with a FSCK. Then the system worked well til around 18 hours later when it crashed with the same sympoms. So, we rebooted the server and wanted to do a filesystem check again. But the HDD wouldnt even load. It was gone. Unfortunatelly it was not realized that the second disk in the system was also not working any more for some time now. Fortunatelly we had our main site backed up externally though. So we could re-install a fresh box and mounted the two drives to the system. We checked the harddisk. One is practically empty (the older one), the other has almost only files in 'lost + found' but these are all "numbered", no real filenames or so.

General :: Changing GRUB From An External Hard Disk To The Internal Hard Disk?

May 14, 2010

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

Server :: File Server Machine To Store All Data So Being That Have Got Four Identical SATA Hard Drives?

Jan 25, 2011

I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:

/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?

Server :: File Server For Windows - Mount More Than One Samba Shares As Network Disk

Jun 17, 2011

I want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??

Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?
