Fedora Installation :: "Force To Be Primary Partition" In Fedora Partitioner?

Apr 4, 2011

What's the "Force to be primary partition" in Fedora partitioner? At least it doesn't work for me, it only uses primary partition using Fedora XFCE Live CD ( the only one that I checked that ).

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Partitioner - 'Starting Partitioner' Freezes At 47%

Jan 11, 2010

I am having a problem with Installing Ubuntu 9.10 on My desktop. I have burnt the disc at the slowest speeds possible, and tested it on my alternate PC's, and it works. Not only, I have extensively tested the disc to verify it's integrity. So it ISNT the disc. It is a component of my Main Desktop that is causing the issue, I am of the thought it is my IDE hard drive.

Firstly, My Specs;
CPU: Intel Q9550 Quad Core (Running at an Overclocked 3.4ghz)
Motherboard: ASUS P5QL PRO P45 Chipset , 1600 FSB , etc
RAM: 3gb of DDR2 Team Elite RAM (running at 667 in Win 7)
Hard Drives: 500gb Western Digital ECO Sata Drive (Win 7 System Drive) and an IDE 250gb Western Digital drive reserved for Linux (I have coded a boot manager to switch between the two)a DVD-ROM drive is on the other channel of the Single IDE port on the Board
Video Card: ASUS/Nvidia GTS250 1GB

I think that covers all the vital hardware.

My problem is that when i boot into the live CD, and attempt an install, the installer freezes at the point of setting up the partitioner/scanning drives, at 47%. SO, the partitioner does not get a chance to start.

I have a gaming system, and it has all the latest gear, i7, 16gb ram, etc and it installs on that (i plugged in a resh drive to test)

This system I am trying to use ubuntu on is my MAIN system, I use it for study (PhD Science...science geeks rule!) and I am attracted by ubuntu's features, especially for scientists.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 With Only One Free PRIMARY Partition?

Oct 12, 2010

right now I've been playing around with Ubuntu using Wubi and I would like to actually install Ubuntu onto its own partition. But I dont want to lose my Windows OS either (I need it for applications like MATLAB and LabVIEW).

My issue is, my laptop currently already has three primary partitions. One for windows, one for recovery and one "SYSTEM_DRV" (used to hold OEM windows license info apparently). I dont want to mess with any of those partitions. my question is, can I still install Ubuntu when I only have one primary partition?

I read about extended and logical partitions in the guide, but the wording was pretty confusing. All it said was Ubuntu needs two partitions, it didnt say if the partitions could be any type.

Fedora Installation :: Force The 13 To Use Dmraid?

Sep 21, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with onboard ICH9R RAID support. I have successfully used this with Fedora 9 in a striped configuration.Upon moving to Fedora 13 (fresh/clean install from scratch), I've noticed that it is no longer using dmraid. It now appears to be using mdadm. Additionally, I need to select load special drivers (or something close to that) during the install to have it find my array - which I've never had to do before with F9. While the install appears to work ok and then subsequently run, my array is reporting differences .. presumably because it is trying to manage what mdadm is also trying to manage. More importantly, I can no longer take a full image and successfully restore it as I could with the dmraid F9 install. Is there anyway to force F13 to use the dmraid it successfully used previously?

Ubuntu Installation :: Turn A Primary Partition Into An Extended One?

just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit pre-installed, and when I boot into my 11.04 CD, there is no simple option to install alongside windows 7. Only the options to erase the entire disk (wiping windows) or manually specifying partitions. I'd like to keep my windows install as I use it for gaming, but I don't want to mess around with partitions while I don't know what I'm doing. According to the 'Allocate disk space' part of the installation, all 4 primary partitions are being used, a main one for the Windows 7 install, one entitled HP tools, and another two I forget the names of. I have looked up that I may need to turn a primary partition into an extended one,

Fedora Installation :: Preupgrade F9 To F12 Fails With Parsing Primary XML Error

Dec 7, 2009

I'm having some issues upgrading my F9 to F12 using 'preupgrade' so I'm looking for anybody who has ever been able to complete a preupgrade from F9 x86_64 to F12. The error message I receive is TypeError: Parsing primary.xml error: attributes construct error. To my knowledge this has been reported as a bug in F10 which was resolved by a yum update to version 3.2.24.

For F9 the latest yum version is 3.2.21 which has this Parsing error bug that prevents the preupgarde to continue. Interesting enough that the preupgarde lets me select Fedora 12 and progresses with all the preupgrade steps properly until the parsing error occur. How to fix this Parsing error on a F9 x86_64 system.

I have all of the ntfs stuff installed. I used to use gparted for this, but decided to make my self use the Yast tools. I like to keep them in ntfs format to get around the 4GB data transfer limit and have them readable by Linux and Windows.

Fedora Installation :: Installation - Creating A Swap Partition Or A Boot Partition?

Jul 27, 2009

I have a brand new thinkpad X301 with 4GB of RAM and thinking of getting fedora 11 on it. The plan is to have it triple boot with vista/seven and hopefully OSx86. I am aware of the 4 primary partitions limit on an MBR disk. I was thinking of having a swap file instead of swap partition and not creating a boot partition as well. If I install the boot loader(GRUB?) on the root partition will I be able to boot it without any problems by using vista's boot loader?

Or Maybe I should install GRUB on the MBR and add all the other operating systems on it? Does anyone have any objections for not creating a swap partition or a boot partition? When comes to desktop environment I've been using KDE in the past, is there any major advantage of using Gnome over it? KDE seems to look really nice on fedora where Gnome is maybe more stable?

Fedora Installation :: Identify Partition Location - Getting The FEDORA Bootloader To Find The PREUPGRADE Kernel

May 29, 2010

Going from Fedora 12 to 13. Got to the point where I have to reboot to install, system reboots to 12. This is a triple boot system with Open Suse and Mint, and the grub2 bootloader from Mint is the bootloader for the whole shebang. In the "how to use preupgrade" instructions there's a line that says "dentify the drive and partition of your Fedora /boot folder." How? If that sounds odd, consider that in my set up "computer" shows 4 partitions (and with just three operating systems..?). I can mount them, but have a problem telling which sytem is Fedora, Suse or Mint. And getting the FEDORA bootloader to find the PREUPGRADE kernel ... Momma said there'd be days like this.

cat /etc/fstab just returned /dev/sda1 on /boot. I installed Fedora first, before Suse or Mint, so being on the first drive or partition sounds right, but the multiple drives throws me, and "just guessing" doesn't seem like the way to go.

Partition for the software that I install (the main file Partition)
Partition for swap
Partition for temporary files
Partition for my home Partition

what's the best way to go around doing that? (that's means using 250 gig Partition's for each, which I don't mind doing) I've never Partitioned a drive before as I've always let the OS do it for me, but this time I want to Partition it myself Or as anybody get other better way's I'm open to Idea's the laptop in question is dual core 2 running @ 2.8 1066 with 6meg cache (or what ever it's called) 8.192 gig of ram, 17" widescreen monitor, 256 Meg graphics card, bluetooth, wireless, 3g Module built in, 2x500 gig (raid 0) blue-ray(reader) /DVD-rw
