OpenSUSE :: When Using The Yast Partitioner To Partition A USB Stick There Was No Option For The Ntfs Format

Apr 25, 2010

When using the Yast partitioner to partition a USB stick, I noticed there was no option for the ntfs format, but has the fat option. Is this a missing functionality/lib or by design? I have all of the ntfs stuff installed. I used to use gparted for this, but decided to make my self use the Yast tools. I like to keep them in ntfs format to get around the 4GB data transfer limit and have them readable by Linux and Windows.

OpenSUSE :: YaST Partitioner Does Not Start - Launch It From Command Line To Get Some Output?

Jun 4, 2011

I have a problem with YaST Partitioner. When I launch it, a window opens, a dialog (to confirm that I know what I am doing) pop-ups, I choose "Yes", the application starts to initialize, and after 0.5-1s the window is closed without any error message. Does anybody know how to at least find out what is wrong? .. or how to launch it from command line to get some output?

Ubuntu :: Format Usb Stick Udf To Ntfs?

Jul 6, 2011

i have a usb stick divided in two; a partition of NTFS for the most part and a small annoying part of a few Mb in UDF which mounts every time as a cdrom. how do i get rid of the small UDF part?

I have tried to format everything as one big chunk in NTFS with Gparted without success.
I have also tried something i found on the net under windows:
1.click Start>>run>> type "CMD">> enter
2.type format X: /FS:NTFS (X would be the drive letter)

but it won't let me format the UDF part.

OpenSUSE Install :: 'System Logs' Option In YAST Is Missing

I've got a fresh install of 11.3 on a x64 machine. I've managed to work through most of the initial hiccups and get a smooth system. However I've noticed that the 'System Logs' option in YAST is missing. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there some supplimental package that I should install? If it was removed from 11.3, is there an easy way to find and read these logs?

OpenSUSE Install :: OpenFATE - #310836: Add An Option In YaST To Comment Out An Entry

Nov 20, 2010

I agree that this is a problem in making every NTFS partition a boot selection option in your grub menu.lst file during the installation of openSUSE. Someone should consider asking help from please_try_again in the openSUSE forums on how to find a bootable Windows partition and add that fuction to the openSUSE installer. Here is a pointer to the findgrub article here.

Looking for Grub and Windows bootloader in all partitions. The basic situation is that there is normally is only ONE booting copy of Windows, so why would you create three or four menu entries due to the number of NTFS partitions found on a hard drive? Finally, just as indicated by Jean-Daniel Dodin, If one of those partitions in the restore partition and a user boots it, it could be all over for the user copy of Windows, for the openSUSE install and for ever getting this user to try openSUSE again.

Ubuntu :: Delete Folders Or Files On NTFS Partition Not A Option To Move To Waste Basket

Nov 24, 2010

10.10 on a ext4 partition. I deleted a folder that sat on a NTFS partition that I use as data storage. I note that if I delete folders or files on this NTFS partition there is not the option to move to waste basket - it is just deleted. If the folder still exists on the hard drive (has not been over written) I may be able to retrieve it - but where could it be? On the NTFS partition?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Partitioner - 'Starting Partitioner' Freezes At 47%

Jan 11, 2010

I am having a problem with Installing Ubuntu 9.10 on My desktop. I have burnt the disc at the slowest speeds possible, and tested it on my alternate PC's, and it works. Not only, I have extensively tested the disc to verify it's integrity. So it ISNT the disc. It is a component of my Main Desktop that is causing the issue, I am of the thought it is my IDE hard drive.

Firstly, My Specs;
CPU: Intel Q9550 Quad Core (Running at an Overclocked 3.4ghz)
Motherboard: ASUS P5QL PRO P45 Chipset , 1600 FSB , etc
RAM: 3gb of DDR2 Team Elite RAM (running at 667 in Win 7)
Hard Drives: 500gb Western Digital ECO Sata Drive (Win 7 System Drive) and an IDE 250gb Western Digital drive reserved for Linux (I have coded a boot manager to switch between the two)a DVD-ROM drive is on the other channel of the Single IDE port on the Board
Video Card: ASUS/Nvidia GTS250 1GB

I think that covers all the vital hardware.

My problem is that when i boot into the live CD, and attempt an install, the installer freezes at the point of setting up the partitioner/scanning drives, at 47%. SO, the partitioner does not get a chance to start.

I have a gaming system, and it has all the latest gear, i7, 16gb ram, etc and it installs on that (i plugged in a resh drive to test)

This system I am trying to use ubuntu on is my MAIN system, I use it for study (PhD Science...science geeks rule!) and I am attracted by ubuntu's features, especially for scientists.

Hardware :: Ran Mkfs.vfat Over Top Ntfs Partition - Any Way To Restore Ntfs Partition Info?

Oct 12, 2010

I was attempting to format a flash drive, and well, used the wrong sdX device. I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.

OpenSUSE Install :: Move /home To Another Partition With Yast?

Jul 18, 2010

Im using suse 11.1 with /home on a separate partition. To move my /home to a larger partition it looked easy to use Yast partitioner. I copied all /home/ files first to the new partition and backed-up fstab.

with Yast I unmounted /dev/sdb6 = /home and mounted it to /local
then unmounted /dev/sda4 = mynewhomepartition and mounted it to /home

checking the new fstab it looked fine but after a restart it did not work and I got an error. resetting the original fstab resetted the system as it used to be. My question is: why does it not work, are there (hidden) files with the old or other settings?.

OpenSUSE Install :: Format The Parts Including /Home And Retain The Win / NTFS Part?

Jul 17, 2010

Attempting install of 11.3 on previous 11.2 dual windows boot box. I want to format the Linux parts including /Home and retain the Win / NTFS part. (dual boot) Peculiar behavior of install DVD. Here is fdisk -l that clearly indicates a 500 GB HD and the Win partition, extended partition and the 3 basic Linux partitions and they seem okay in total.

Linux-mocx:/ # fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x252d252c

[Code]...

I aborted the installation. What could possibly cause the 11.2 parts and bootloader to get this wacked up ? Outside of some sound issues the 11.2 install works okay for the most part. No crashing or lockups. Really want to get up to 11.3. though. I obviously have some work to do with 35 GB of missing space on the HD and Grub living someplace on the wrong side of the river. Suggestions and a pointer or two would be most welcome guys. ( I really don't want the pain of installing that other OP system or I'd reformat and reinstall nice and clean.) Do I need to repartition, change mount points and reinstall Grub maybe.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Access Encrypted Partition With The YaST Practitioner Tool

Feb 13, 2010

I encrypted my home partition with the YaST Partitioner tool, but now I can't access it anymore. After I encrypted it I rebooted the machine and thought that it would prompt me a password field to access the partition, but now I can't access it at all. I tried "mount -t ext4 /dev/sda7 /home" which gives me that error after I entered the password: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so"

The info I get from "dmesg | tail" is: "EXT4-fs (sda7): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem" Before I encrypted it I converted the /home partition from ext3 to ext4 without any problems and it worked properly. After playing around with it I also discovered that /dev/sda7 got wiped out of /etc/fstab, but I entered it again.

OpenSUSE Install :: Format The 'Home' Partition?

Mar 27, 2010

I was recently forced to do a reinstall of OpenSUSE. As part of that I backed up the folders I needed to keep. The installation however didn't format the 'Home' partition though. At first I thought it was nice, but I've run into trouble with a program I most definately need to get working. So my plan is to re-install yet again.

how to make the install format the root partition I think it is, and the 'home' partition, so I can start fresh.

To further complicate things My laptop (which this is happening on) is dual booting between OpenSUSE and Windows 7. It is VERY important that the windows partitions remain.

OpenSUSE :: Setting Permissions On NTFS Partition?

May 3, 2010

I've recently installed an OpenSuse 11.2 in what I'd like to be a definitive jump from windows environment.I'm not very confident yet with my linux skills, so at this moment I've yet have both systems installed with a data NTFS partition to store music, movies, documents, and general data that I'd like to use in any of the two systems. The NTFS partition has no writting permissions for anybody except root user, so I can't work anything from my personal user without starting an app like su or login as root. I want to change this by making a group (windowsWriters) where my usual user is included wich I pretend to make the group owner of NTFS partition.

I've created the group and inserted my user into it, but I'm unable to change the owner group nor any permission on NTFS partition or any of it's subdirectories. I've tried to made it through opening dolphin as su (Alt+F2 kdesu dolphin) and through chmod in consolemode logged as root, in both cases the action seems to work correctly and no error is spotted, however when I look again at the partition/folder/file permissions/ownership no changes have been made.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Prevent That Particular NTFS Partition From Automatically Being Mounted

Aug 21, 2010

I have an NTFS partition problem which prevents me from installing openSUSE on my desktop computer. It's not a trouble with installation, it's a security issue relating to NTFS.I have a desktop running XP exclusive, but wish to also go dual boot but can not because I have created a NTFS partitoin on my HD wich I don't wish others to know about. After booting window$, I am able to successfully unmount the partition using Diskpart, which is a command line program within that OS. Once unmounted, it is effectively hidden from those who might be snooping until I manually remount it. Essentially I remove the drive letter which makes it inaccessible to Windows.

(Yes I know a person with proper skills can easily find it, but that's not applicable in my case for those who would look)If I install openSUSE which I desperately desire, it will automatically locate and mount the NTFS partition I wish to hide, making it easily accessible to anyone booted up in SUSE.Changing the attributes to the associated files to "hidden" is not an option. I need that secret partion to remain unknown. How can I hide, deny access to, or prevent that particular NTFS partition from automatically being mounted in Suse? Once that security issue is resolved I look forward to using Suse again, like the other people do in our home.
