General :: Convert A Logical Partition To A Primary Partition?

I have the following partition setup. I would like to know how can I convert the logical partition sda6 to a primary partition.
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I would like to convert sda6 to a primary partition, the reason for this it to install windows 7 starter.

Around 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

This is my partition table....(in the image) Now I would like to install windows in the unpartitioned space after a long time..... I tried but could not do that. I understood that Windows needs only primary partitions!
So I tried to convert this logical one into primary, but of no use... Is it possible to convert that unpartitioned space which is under logical drive to a primary one!

I'm trying to convert big ext4 partition to logical. I was able to do that with Arconis Disk Director Home 11 with swap and ext3 partition, but it doesn't recognize ext4.
Unfortunately I can't copy 2TB data to another HD Now I have:
Pri /boot ext3
Log / ext3
Log swap swap
Pri /media/X ext4 <- 2TB

I'm trying to convert big ext4 partition to logical. I was able to do that with Arconis Disk Director Home 11 with swap and ext3 partition, but it doesn't recognize ext4.

When I do that I be able to install Ubuntu Server next to CentOS. And I will add partition /home(ext4) for both and "/"(ext4) for Ubuntu.

Problem:Here's what I had, they basically needed to switch places.C: Windows Primary (The contents of this was my boot partition)D: Extended Logical (I wanted this to become the primary)I googled what to do, and believe it or not it seems people really didn't have a solution besides reformatting it?We learn from our mistakes. That's why I'm posting what I did to see if someone knows a better way!What I did:First I used an Ubuntu LiveCD or 10.04. (Not .1 oh noes)Then I opened up gparted and shrank the extended partition so I would have enough room to move them around.I mounted both the C: and D: partitions and copied the data over to the primary from the logical.I deleted the logical and then moved and resized the primary!Then I flagged the primary partition boot.Well that's one way to get from logical to primary with your data

I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.10 each on primary partitions. Then on the other 2 partitions I have the manufacturer recovery partition (which I am not sure I should remove...), and then a partition for storage and files. Now I want an Arch Linux installation on the hard drive, but obviously I cannot create a new primary partition because I already have 4. I found out that linux can run from a logical partition (which you can have multiple of)..However I do not want to format my Ubuntu partition and I'd prefer to keep the data on there all intact. Is there a way to move my Ubuntu installation (on the primary partition) to an extended partition where I could put multiple logical partitions for multiple linux installations?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10
I have been running a dual boot system for a while now and I haven't logged onto the Windows side for quite a while. I'm ready to whack it.
What I want to do is get rid of sda1, sda2, sda3 partitions(all Windows related) - migrate my Linux install(sda5) to a Primary partition, migrate the swap out of the extended partition, and then make everything else my "data"(ext4) partition...so basically go to 2 primary partitions and a swap.
I know how to ultimately get to my one big "data" partition, but the part I'm not so sure or comfortable with is whacking the current Primary partitions and migrating the Ubuntu install to the new primary partition.

I installed fedora 13 64 bit and it works great but I encountered several issues when setting up guest OS with KVM. The problem seems to be related to selinux. But let me first ask question about logical volume. By Default fedora created logical volumes:

"If you expect that you or other users will store data on the system, create a separate partition for the /home directory within a volume group. With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Currrently 53 GB filesystem is mounted as /media/3467BH89JK789 but this does not work well with KVM. how do I create this logical volume out of 53 Gb filesystem partition and add proper selinux info and do I add to vg_vostrolx volume group and in a different volume group?

I started withsda1 windows restore sda3 extendedsda5 swapsda6 /mandrivasda7 /SUSE 11.3
sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

So I tried adding a new, 2nd hard drive to my Ubuntu 9.04 desktop for some additional storage and only managed to kill my system so that it won't boot up anymore (I just get a blinking cursor after the BIOS does its thing).I could sure use a little help getting back to a functioning system, and then adding the second drive. After fixing drive partition numbers, I got the following error from cfdisk: Code: FATAL ERROR: Bad logical partition 6: enlarged logical partitions overlap Press any key to exit cfdisk However, I can see all my partitions with fdisk and gparted, I can mount and use all of them.I used the following guide to fix the drive numbers order: Reorder partition drive numbers in linux | LinkedBits Does somebody know whet is cfdisks problem and how can I fix it?

I'm installing the ubuntu on my new computer with 1 TB hard drive (and core i7 870 with 4G RAM), for the purpose of scientific computing. I have two questions:
1. Since I am not absolutely certain that the simulation won't use larger swap space than usual (say 3x4G = 12G), I intend to set it initially as 12G keeping in mind that I might have to extend it later. So one might suggest putting it on lvm partition. But then I read that I can maximize the speed if I put the swap at the outer track. If I mix it with the other logical volumes in the same volume group, then I don't know where my swap space is across my hard drive, isn't it? So this might suggest I make it as a primary partition. I'm stuck..
2. My current planned partition map is
/ 1G
/tmp 10G
/usr 20G
/var 5G
/home the rest
taking into account I will install MATLAB and maybe other visualization software. What do you think of this scheme?

I'm multi-booting with Windows 7 x64 and (at least) Linux Mint. Because I hadn't yet made a backup of my MBR, when I installed Linux Mint on a logical partition, I told the installer to put GRUB on the partition instead of in the MBR. This turned out to be useless, as I need to use GRUB from a boot disk to get into the GRUB I installed. Before installing it in the MBR, I'd like to get it out of the partition, preferably without wiping and reinstalling Linux. I don't relish the prospect of going through two layers of GRUB when I want to boot Linux. How do I get it out, or what other options are available to me?

I apologize if this has been asked a hundred times, but I searched through the threads and posts here and did not find an answer that helped me at all.What is the exact process of booting from a logical partition?
I have read several things, and all are confusing to me and I can't find a good answer.Here's what I know and an example:I've read this is easily possible.some things I've read said something about it being complex and that you have to chainload. Some things I've read said it's very easy, but it has something to do with booting from the extended partition. Others said, no you use the logical partition itself. I can't clear up what anyone is talking about..When using openSUSE 11.1, the Live CD and trying to install it. It will give me problems when trying to boot from a logical partition, not to mention I don't want to do something wrong and add data or anything where it shouldn't be. I don't know what I'm doing, at all, and I can't understand people's explanations of this.
When using openSUSE, you can choose (when configuring GRUB using the graphical installation) "boot from extended partition" and use "custom boot partition: sda(1,2,3,whatever)" and it will work. If you choose to boot from the logical partition only, and don't check "boot from extended partition", it will say "no operating system found" when booting. What exactly is happening here, I'm completely lost. Choosing "boot from extended partition" can't cause any problems of any kind, can it? What is the proper way of doing things in this situation, what is really happening?

The good news is I was able to shrink one of my partitions to create some unallocated space. The bad news is the unallocated space is on my primary partition, so gparted is not allowing me to use that space to create another partition since I already have two primaries and an extended. Any tricks to do that?

linux newbie and i made a mistake while installing windows and linuxI made 4 primary partitions for my HD as i didnt know that only maximum 4 primary partitions are allowed.Now 25 GB of my HD is wasted. It is shown as unusable.CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME IF I CAN CONVERT MY WASTED 25GB INTO SECONDARY AND USE IT WITHOUT FORMATTING AND RE PARTITIONING MY ENTIRE HD ???
