Fedora Installation :: Reinstall WinXP After Installing 10

Feb 3, 2009

I have a dual boot system - WinXP and Fedora 10. I am happy with my fedora 10, but as usual the WinXP has lots of malware on it. So I wish to reinstall it and patch it up with a AV. Is it possible to reinstall WinXP without breaking the system - becoz AFAIK, installing will remove grub from the superblock and then there will be no way to reload fedora even if it is still there. Can't I copy grub and the partition table away and reinstall it from windows after the intallation completes? That way I shall have my dual boot system back as usual if I didnot do any changes to the partition table during the fresh windows installation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Remix With WinXP Now WinXP BSOD On Boot?

Sep 12, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Fedora Installation :: Fc10 Cannot Access WINXP Through Network

May 28, 2009

I have a home network with 2 WINXP machines and one I am trying to load FC10 on. If I get FC10 to work, I will convert the others to FC10. I am trying to access the WINXP machines through my LAN. I have installed samba. I have gone through a lot of places to try to configure samba. Several places say I have to set the security level on the ethernet card using system-config-securitylevel. When I enter this in terminal, I get command not found. I checked with yum and it is installed. I have tried using the menus but cannot find it anywhere. I can see the FC workgroup from one of the WINXP machines but I cannot look into it. It says I don't have the right permissions. I would like to set it so I don't need a userid/password at all. Can I do this?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Installing WinXP In VirtualBox

May 5, 2010

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10) and I've also got my WinXP Toshiba Rescue CD which i'd like to install in VirtualBox but it just won't go past the 'unpacking' part. When it says that it's completed, the only option i have is clicking OK. Doing that just shuts down the VM then. And when I restart the VM, it just does the unpacking step all over again. Last year when I had a dual boot system (XP and ubuntu 8.10 i think it was), the installation went fine until I realized that my ubuntu partition was way too small. So I could not install XP in a VM. But it still got to the actual windows installation step. I'm still using the same PC the rescue CD came with.

General :: Unable To Boot WinXP After Installing Ubuntu 10.10

Oct 27, 2010

I have ubuntu 8.10 & Windows XP installed on my PC. I formatted the C: partition and installed a new fresh copy of Win XP. After that I was not able to login to ubuntu 8.10. It is clear that Win XP overwrote the MBR. I tried to re-install the boot loader (Grub) again by boot ubuntu 10.10 CD. Finally, I was able to boot both ubuntu version 8.10 and 10.10. However, I was not able to boot Win XP. There is an entry in grun menu of ubuntu 10.10 specific for WinXP, but when I press enter to boot Windows I get back to grub menu.

Fedora Installation :: Grub Boot Loader Doesn't Work For Core 12 And WinXP?

Jun 7, 2010

I have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.

Fedora Installation :: Reinstall Grub After A Windows Installation Deleted It?

Jul 23, 2011

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

1. Find the partition where the Grub Stage1 is code...

Fedora Installation :: Anaconda In F10 -> F12 Reinstall?

Jan 12, 2010

I'm trying to install F12, over my existing F10. I ran preupgrade, and it installed anaconda into the boot menu, without apparent problems. On reboot, however, it fails with the following message:Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated.Cannot retrieve respository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: anaconda-InstallationRepo-200911081854.i386. Please verify its path and try again.I must admit to being a bit unclear as to what's going on here. Is it looking in the cached pre-install tree for said repomd.xml, but said tree is somehow corrupt; or is it trying to find it via the network, and failing (for whatever reason).

Fedora Installation :: Reinstall F Without Losing Home Partition?

Feb 7, 2011

I tried to install rawhide by enabling the rawhide repo and doing a yum update. Lets just say it didn't go so well. My system wont start the GUI when I start the computer. It just shows the Fedora boot animation and stays there. So anyway I need to reinstall Fedora 14. I wanted to reinstall Fedora without having to backup and restore all my data (my home directory). So I did some Googleing and found that if I had my home directory on a separate partition that I was set to go. All I had to do was format "/" and just tell it to use the "/home" partition I already had and not to format it and I that was it. So I went to try it myself and found that it was not as straight forward as it seemed. Well at least for me.

I clicked on "lv_root" assuming that was supposed to have "/" as its mount point. I clicked the edit button. I selected "/" as its mount point and told it to format it as ext4. Then I clicked on lv_home and clicked on the edit button. I made its mount point "/home" and clicked "ok". I clicked "Next" and I get this error "Bootable partitions cannot be on a logical volume". What do I need to do to fix this? I assume this has to do with the "lv_" at the beginning of the partition names.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Find WinXP Partition

Apr 19, 2011

So I recently started using Windows 7, but it kept crashing so i thought "OK back to WinXP and Ubuntu 10.10" So I installed Windows (urrrggh) and that went fine, but now that I have come to installing Ubuntu Desktop 10.10, it cant seem to find the Windows XP partition, I tried manually editing partitions but it wouldnt let me resize the partition. But it did give me the option to install the Bootloader (GRUB) to the partition labelled "Windows XP Professional".

I have used this setup before and ran fine, bare in mind that was with 9.10, maybe I should install 9.10 and then use "sudo apt-get install dist-upgrade"?If i cant get this working I will try another distro and see if its Ubuntu or whether its a Windows or disk issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Using GRUB To Boot WinXP On A Separate HD

Jan 6, 2010

I have been a happy little GRUB user for a while now, but now I want to use GRUB to boot a physically separate WinXP hard drive, and I can't seem to do that. Normally GRUB is easy, (I even have a nice splash screen of my own making). Its a champion solution for booting into Ubuntu Linux on /dev/sda5 or Win XP on /dev/sda1.

My second HD which Linux recognizes as /dev/sdb, has a Win XP boot sector and Win XP in one partition.

Normally I boot off /dev/sda using GRUB, and from Linux I can mount and have access to /dev/sdb - that works well. Occasionally however, I need to boot the separate Win XP system on the second HD, and to do that I switch the boot drive in the BIOS, but lately that is getting to be a bit tedious.

Initially I though to give the additional boot choice to GRUB, I simply had to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and point to the second HD (where /dev/sdb = hd1 in GRUB speak). Unfortunately, when I select the new choice, it simply boots Win XP off the first HD.

I'm confident GRUB does look at the first partion on hd1 as expected as I can induce an error by having hd1 disconnected, or write silly partion numbers into menu.lst. So if it does in fact find the first partion on hd1, why doesn't it boot? Why does it default to WinXP on hd0?

I have diligently tried physically swapping SATA drive cables and playing with bios switching and have messed about a fair bit with menu.lst to make sure I have drive and partition numbers right, but all to no avail. I have also tried changing rdisk(0) in boot.ini to rdisk(1) on the second drive when it is not the boot drive.

I'm afraid the only other thing I can think of is that the second hard drive requires a Linux boot sector if I am going to boot it up from GRUB, but somehow that doesn't make sense. Surely GRUB can work across physically separate drives, so I'm open to other ideas first.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install 9.10 With WinXP Using NTLDR As Bootloader?

Jan 14, 2010

I first installed 9.10 from 9.10 Live CD to my Thinkpad X200 selecting not to install its bootloader thinking I could use NTLDR. That did not work at all. Tried bootpart, starting 9.10 from LiveCD to reinstall grup... I gave up and in WinXP, deleted the 9.10 partition and its SWAP partition.

I reinstall 9.10 again into the now freed space. This time I selected to install the bootloader but to /dev/sda5.After completing the installation,I rebooted to WinXP and used bootpart to create the necessart ubuntu.bin and instructions in boot.ini.That did not work. I went into 9.10 live CD again and use dd command to extract the fir 512bytes from /dev/sda5 and place it in a USB drive as ubuntu.bin.Rebooted into WinXP and put this new ubuntu.bin into C:. All I get when booting into Ubuntu is a blank screen...

Also, on the where to install to step, Where at the top it should say that another operating system is installed, it is blank.

I'm wondering if I continue the installation, on boot-up will it detect windows?

I have searched this, and after 15 pages of results, I have not come to a definite conclusion.
