Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot WinXP Pro From GRUB Menu
Mar 8, 2011I've got an old Dell Precision 670 which has a SCSI disk. I installed 10.04 and everything worked fine - I could boot into 10.04 from the GRUB menu. I later added an IDE disk and installed WinXP Pro on it.
When I ran 'sudo update-grub', Lucid discovered the IDE disk and added a WinXP Pro entry to the GRUB menu. Now, though I can still boot 10.04 from the GRUB menu, I can't boot WinXP - the screen goes blank, and I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart.
For what it's worth, here are the results of using boot_info_script055.sh:

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Lost In Dual Boot After Updating Win 7
May 3, 2011I was using dual boot (windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10) and it was going well. Couple of days ago I updated to Ubuntu 11.04 and everything was OK. Yesterday I cought some virus in windows, installed Microsoft security essentials which asked to update Windows. After update, dual boot is gone. It boots to windows directly with no option to choose between OS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Remix With WinXP Now WinXP BSOD On Boot?
Sep 12, 2010I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

May 10, 2010After Updating to Ubuntu 10.04, I cann't enter into Windows XP, even there is a option for Windows XP in the Grub menu. I have tried the command " sudo grub-update", but it is useless. I just re-install my Windows XP. I can enter it again. However, I do a stupied thing again. I just update grub to a newer version, and then I cann#t enter XP again just like before.

Jan 27, 2011when it comes to Linux but after having a positive experience running a previous version of Ubuntu (8:10 Intrepid Ibex) I thought it may be nice to update to a more recent version so I obtained the CD version of Ubuntu 10:10 Maverick Meerkat.My main OS is Windows XP Professional (SP3) and I installed and ran 8:10 as a programme within windows, unfortunately when I tried to do the same with 10:10 I had a problem so decided to install on boot-up using the option to run both OS side-by-side.Now I have lost the option on boot-up to select which OS I want to use! It automatically goes straight into the login page for the Ubuntu there is no sign of WinXP.I have personal files on Windows I just can NOT lose! its only 4 days since I put all my grand-daughters first birthday pictures and film on there!
I have run : "sudo update-grub"and no windows show.I have also run the codes: " sudo grub-install /dev/sdc" & "sudo update-grub # just for good measure" still no sign of windows.here is my most recent result report using Boot Info Script

I am running meerkat 10.10 on the partition that is now ,not accessible
I dont know if i have grub or grub2
My machine boots to the grub boot menu list but its all of my old kernels that have been removed from 9.04
I have a menu list in my ubuntu boot/grub partition but they all point to 9.04, i have backups but they are the same 9.04
I have no grub2 menu list in etc/default
Can i just edit the menu list in boot/grub directory to look for my latest kernel and how should i insert it sudo?
OpenSUSE Install :: Lost Windows Option From Boot Menu?
Dec 5, 2009I already had windows installed on the c drive so linux suse 11.2 has been installed onto d. There was a problem after I finished the install - after I rebooted no menu appeared, the pc just hung on a black screen with flashing cursor, so I put the linux DVD in again and rain a repair. It repaired the boot menu but now there is no option to boot into windows.

Ubuntu :: Grub - Lost My Windows Partition - Can't Find Menu.lst In /boot/grub
Nov 1, 2010I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

General :: Ubantu Lost Sound After Updating Packages?
Mar 29, 2010I am using Ubantu9.04 and before few days I have tried installing amsn.It prompted to dependencies for following packages :
1. farsight2-0.0.17
2. gstreamer-0.10.27
After installing that I have lost sound,and the error was :
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plug-ins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."
aplay -l
gives output - sound card not found
but lspci -v - list the sound card
Ubuntu :: Updating New Kernal Choice Of Menu.lst
Jun 3, 2010This morning I had 10 updates for my system including a new kernel 2.6.28-19 During install I was asked a question as to which menu.lst to use. I was completely confused as there was no documentation explaining the choices, so I took the default, keep my current menu.list. I did that because I have a modification to my menu.lst having added acpi-noirq I was afraid I would loose that and not be able to boot. Anyhow I ended up with my same menu.lst without the new kernel. So it booted the old kernel 2.6.28-18.Where is some documentation to give one some idea of which of the about 8 choices to make? I can't be the first with this problem. I have another computer to undate that has a different mod to menu list.I would like to know the correct way to choose the proper choice. If I don't get an answer I will try to document in more detail the choices.
I got around the problem by editing menu.list and copying the entries for 2.6.28-18 and changing them to 2.6.28-19 Many folks might not even realise they were running on the old kernel.
Ubuntu Installation :: Weird Menu After Updating?
Jul 10, 2011Ubuntu is getting glitchy and I need to update it, but there's something holding me back. In the past, whenever I used to update, I would get some sort of GRUB Menu (if that's what it's called) after reboot, and I would have no idea of how to get into Ubuntu. This would eventually lead me to uninstall Ubuntu via Wubi because of frustration and lack of answers on the internet.
But not this time. I want the solution this time so I can be successful in updating. Can anybody PLEASE tell me what happened all of those times, and what I can do to prevent it from happening now?
Ubuntu Installation :: No OS Choice In GRUB Menu After Updating 10.04
May 19, 2010I installed Lucid Lynx in my p4:2.66 hz machine with XP sp3 pre-installed and the system booted just fine with dual boot option. Then I updated my Lucid. All updates were downloaded. But during update installation a power failure caused PC reboot. Again I started update manager and it gave me option for "Partial Upgrade". I did the same and it instructed me to reboot. The the real damn thing happens now when I rebooted, In the GRUB menu it showed only Memorytest options. I see no OS choice there, I tried to reinstall GRUB from live CD with mount options. And it showed no errors during the procedure. I rebooted but the same problem exists.

May 29, 2010The menu bar - and pretty much everything else on my desktop - has disappeared after I let the system update itself.
Only the bar at the bottom is still there, and I can't start any applications, not even a terminal. No icons, no background, no anything (I got Firefox running by clicking on a link in the About KDE menu item in the task manager, which i started with ctrl-alt-del)
During the update the system just restarted, and afterwards it was like that.
How do I get it to work again?

May 27, 2011I have totally screwed up my graphical desktop. running Lucid was playing with properties of the top menue bar, moved its position to the right side of screen, tried it on the left side of screen, selected auto hide, then moved it to the bottom of screen. you guess it! It auto hid and now I can't right click on it to get back to the properties and move it back to the top. does anybody know what file I have to fix to get my desktop back I am no good with out point and click.

It is clear that Win XP overwrote the MBR. I tried to re-install the boot loader (Grub) again by boot ubuntu 10.10 CD. Finally, I was able to boot both ubuntu version 8.10 and 10.10. However, I was not able to boot Win XP. There is an entry in grun menu of ubuntu 10.10 specific for WinXP, but when I press enter to boot Windows I get back to grub menu.

Jan 6, 2010I have been a happy little GRUB user for a while now, but now I want to use GRUB to boot a physically separate WinXP hard drive, and I can't seem to do that. Normally GRUB is easy, (I even have a nice splash screen of my own making). Its a champion solution for booting into Ubuntu Linux on /dev/sda5 or Win XP on /dev/sda1.
My second HD which Linux recognizes as /dev/sdb, has a Win XP boot sector and Win XP in one partition.
Normally I boot off /dev/sda using GRUB, and from Linux I can mount and have access to /dev/sdb - that works well. Occasionally however, I need to boot the separate Win XP system on the second HD, and to do that I switch the boot drive in the BIOS, but lately that is getting to be a bit tedious.
Initially I though to give the additional boot choice to GRUB, I simply had to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and point to the second HD (where /dev/sdb = hd1 in GRUB speak). Unfortunately, when I select the new choice, it simply boots Win XP off the first HD.
I'm confident GRUB does look at the first partion on hd1 as expected as I can induce an error by having hd1 disconnected, or write silly partion numbers into menu.lst. So if it does in fact find the first partion on hd1, why doesn't it boot? Why does it default to WinXP on hd0?
I have diligently tried physically swapping SATA drive cables and playing with bios switching and have messed about a fair bit with menu.lst to make sure I have drive and partition numbers right, but all to no avail. I have also tried changing rdisk(0) in boot.ini to rdisk(1) on the second drive when it is not the boot drive.
I'm afraid the only other thing I can think of is that the second hard drive requires a Linux boot sector if I am going to boot it up from GRUB, but somehow that doesn't make sense. Surely GRUB can work across physically separate drives, so I'm open to other ideas first.

CentOS 5 :: Tripple Boot 5.3 With WinXP And Ubuntu On A MSI Wind
Sep 29, 2009I'm currently studying linux at my local college as part of Networking IT Course. We were instructed to install centos onto a VMWare virtual machine but it didn't run too efficiently on my MSI Wind and restricted my networking in WinXP. I have already got Ubuntu Netbook Release installed on the Wind alongside the WinXP install that came with the machine. However everytime i try and install Centos 5.3 in a 9640MB free space Partition it says:

Jun 17, 2010I have winxp and ubuntu 10.04 dualboot. They were working ok. Today I removed old *21 kernel image and headers so grub updated the confs. That's all I did that could cause the win no longer boot. It starts booting, the screen goes black and the PC reboots. I tried safe mode, it started to load some dlls as it usually shows in safe mode but then still reboot.
