Fedora :: ISO Emulation And Multiboot Hang Ups

Jun 26, 2010

I have a GRUB2 USB multiboot setup. Plus I have a multiboot setup on my computer with Ubuntu 9.10, PCLinuxOS, Windows XP, and Fedora 13. The issue I'm having is different but the same. On my USB multiboot, Fedora will hang up on certain devices. Things such as touchpad, bluetooth, etc. On my PC it hangs up on first the bluetooth, then I unplug, then the USB hub, then the mouse and finally the external hard drive. It detects the devices but it freezes on detection. I did get this error before the device detection began:

Quote:

dracut; dracut-005-3.fc13
dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=(0,4)'
dracut: Refusing to continue
dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=(0,4)'
dracut: Refusing to continue

this is on the PC and the problem with the USB is that it will hang up when detecting devices.

Fedora Installation :: F11 Bricks Server Unless BIOS Changed From AHCI To IDE EMULATION?

Jun 10, 2009

Server has DQ35JO board, 8GB memory, multiple SATA hard drives. It was happily running Fedora 10, and Fedora 9 before that. I downloaded and burned the F11 DVD, booted it, did an install which is:

-- delete the LVMs
-- create a 200 MB /boot on ext3, the rest of /dev/sda on ext3 as /
-- reformat the swap partition on /dev/sdb1
-- leave the other file systems alone (they are all ext3)

I chose no optional packages and let it install. It finished normally and got to the "click to reboot" screen. Now, my server is completely bricked. When I power it up I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I cannot even get to the BIOS, or boot my Fedora DVD, much less boot the boot drive.

Fedora :: How To Multiboot Distros From LVM And/or Non-LVM Partitions

Dec 6, 2010

My drive was set as LVM during installation of FC3 and has worked fine, but now i need to upgrade to some newer distro and would like to "try before i buy" one, without losing my current data and functionality (email and browsing). Once i find something that i like, then i would want to use the new distro and still have access to my old data files.

My thoughts were that i needed to somehow create a non-LVM partition in which to download and install the newer distros, but that is scary at the thought of making a mistake and losing everything. And from the success story it appears that is possibly not necessary since he uses only LVM. i tried using WINE a while back and something in the windows program started reformatting/deleting my linux account in /home and i lost everything, so i'm not thinking highly of virtualizations, and i've reverted to "if it ain't broke don't fix it"...

But now all the multimedia requires newer flash, and new flash requires new browser, and new browser wants new kernel, etc... so the time has come to try the new stuff, even though the old stuff works fine. i have a /boot ext2, and the rest is / LVM. i would like to try ubuntu or debian, knoppix, FC?. Most of the info i've found for multiboot has been anti-LVM, so it has not been useful and i'm overwhelmed by all the information. Could someone who used LVM and loaded other distros give me some detailed pointers on how it works and maybe some successful example scripts or partition tables, etc.?

Fedora :: Multiboot - Installing F12 With XP / Win7 And Ubuntu?

May 14, 2010

I'd like to install xp, win7, fedora, ubuntu. I installed xp then I used gparted to create a partition before xp and installed w7 both can dual boot fine. I installed fedora 12 in grub I can see fedora and windows bootloader. I can get to win7 and login fine. When I go into grub, then win bootloader, then xp, I can get to the login screen, but I can't login. I enter my pw, it takes several seconds, seems to login, then quickly logs out. I see "closing network connections", then I'm back to the xp login screen again. I'm not sure why I can't login to the xp partition. Fedora and win7 work fine. Win7 & xp worked fine before fedora. Grub menu.lst looks ok. After fixing this, I'd like to next install ubuntu

hd0,0 - sda1 - w7
hd0,1 - sda2 - xp
hd0,2 - sda3 - extended
hd0,4 - sda5 - fat32 (data)
hd0,5 - sda6 - /boot fedora
hd0,6 - sda7 - / fedora
hd0,7 - sda8 - swap fedora

Ubuntu :: 32 Bit Emulation In 10.04 64 Bit

I'm trying to install smlnj 110.73 on a 64 bit lucid, and during installation, it complains of no 32-bit support.

Having zero knowledge of how 32-bit emulation is triggered in Ubuntu, all the leads I have to go on is this piece of shell script used by the installer to determine the architecture and emulation:

Code:
#
# on 64-bit linux systems, we need to check to see if the 32-bit emulation
# support is installed

Fedora :: 15 Hang In Parallels On Mac?

May 30, 2011

I've been using F15 through the early releases and now with the final release, and in all of them I've had the same issue:

It will install fine in Parallels, however about 30 seconds to 1 minute after launch, it will hang and completely freeze. This will happen even in run level 3 with no gui running. It doesn't *appear* to happen at the same time every time.

I've tried, disabling networking, sound, and a few other things in the VM to see if that has an effect, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I've also tried making a copy of my F14 VM and upgrading. The same issue persists in this case as well.

I have had no issues with F15 on the metal on different machines, as a matter of fact it's been great and required very little hardware work-arounds. Similarly, F14 has run fine and continues to run fine on Parallels on this machine.

I'm fairly sure my laptop has a 64 bit architecture (for example, i have the "lm" flag when i cat the /proc/cpuinfo), so is there a way to convince VB that I have a 64 bit machine? unless there is a better way to find out if my CPU is indeed NOT 64 bit?

Fedora :: System Hang On External HD - 10

Aug 4, 2009

I am running fedora 10 on my laptop. I use a usb Western digital "MyBook" 500Gb (ext3). I am using this hard drive since more than 1 year now. Lately I run into a single problem when I read a precise file. The laptop becomes totally unresponsive and I have to manually shutdown the computer. After start-up I can find that the /var/log/message file of my previous session has grown very quickly with "[sdb] Sense Key : No Sense [current]" and "[sdb] Add. Sense: No additional sense information" messages.

I found various similar question on the web, most of the answer were hardware dependent and kernel related. I tried various kernel hoping that my specific problem would be fixed in the next one but with no success (all the kernel since fedora 10 release and two testing one: 2.6.29.5-84.fc10 and 2.6.29.6-93.fc10), I don't have access to a Fedora 11 machine.

I replaced the usb cable and check that the power supply was working correctly.

I am joining part of /var/log/message and the results of lsusb (related to the external hard drive).

Ubuntu :: Xmess And Apple II Emulation

Feb 4, 2011

If I run the following command:

Code:

I get this output

Code:

It seems that then I should be able to simply issue the following command and be off and running:

Code:

The emulator opens, I get a warning telling me to type OK and then get to a display that basically says this:

Typing anything gets me to a command line, but there doesn't seem to be anything there (not surprising based on the "---" on the previous screen). Typing "CATALOG" shows nothing.

Does anyone know how to use this emulator or has run into the same problem. I think that I'm doing things correctly, but it just doesn't seem to be recognizing the dsk file.

Fedora Hardware :: Second Channel Causes The Boot To Hang?

Mar 10, 2011

I had to replace the motherboard, processor, memory on a machine because the old motherboard died. It worked fine under the old board but the new board (Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H) is causing Fedora 11 (and the Fedora 14 Live CD) to fail when initializing an Adaptec AHA-3940UW SCSI adapter.

I was able to display the boot messages and found that the first channel on the adapter is fine, but the second channel causes the boot to hang. The messages are:

General :: Getting F Keys To Work In Terminal Emulation?

Jan 28, 2010

I'm running Debian (both Sarge and Lenny, on different systems) under Gnome and have a number of thin client workstations that connect to a software application on an AIX server. I'm using gnome-terminal to provide terminal emulation for this software. Unfortunately, the emulation leaves something to be desired, and doesn't catch all of the F keys properly. It seems F1-F4 act as some form of escape key, exiting out of the software back to the command line, when they should be performing different functions in the software. F5 and F6 work as they should in the emulation. Is there a setting I can apply to my gnome-terminal launcher that will make this behave like it I want? The terminal should ideally match the behavior of a Link MC5 terminal (we have some of these old beasts still around, still crunching away), but alas, I don't know how to implement this.

Fedora Hardware :: Adding New Drives Causes FC To Hang On Boot?

Mar 29, 2010

Fedora hanging during boot when new drives are connected.

I'm running an FC12 install on a 750gig Samsung SATA drive. BIOS is set for drives to be AHCI

I've got 3 other identical 750's, two of which have never been used (as in never been written to). None of the drives have any jumpers set on them, as I've read that SATA handles that. At some point, all 4 drives were connected, and I had formatted one of the drives and backed some data up to it. But a reboot left me with FC hanging on load and the solution was to unplug all 3 other drives. I left it alone for a month.

Troubleshooting this weekend, I found with just my active drive and one of the untouched drives connected, FC still hangs. What I mean by hanging is that the blue background appears with the un-filled 'F' logo which filles diagnally under normal conditions. Mine will not begin to fill, and keyboard commands are not recognized.

It almost resembles a master/slave problem, but I thought that was gotten rid of with SATA. I tried setting the BIOS to use IDE-compatibility mode and set the order of the drives but the problem was the same, though I did not try any jumper arrangements.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Midi With Alsa Oss Emulation And Pulseaudio?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm under Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron using pulseaudio. I've got 2 soundcards : one internal AC97 7.1 without midi (card 0 in ALSA) and a PCI C-MEDIA 2.1 with OPL3 midi (card 3 in ALSA) I have sound in most ALSA or OSS applications with full 7.1 + 2.1 duplex. I have MIDI playback in any ALSA MIDI players (client 29:0 in ALSA).

I'm trying to run Final Doom for W95 on WINE with OSS driver. I have sound effects but no MIDI music. I tryed with padsp and aoss wrappers. I know I can use ALSA driver in wine or timidity, but I would rather use padsp + hardware MIDI if possible. How do I configure ALSA OSS emulation for MIDI playback and check that it's working ? I tryed playmidi but whatever I told it, it couldn't find any midi device.
