CentOS 5 :: Udev Hang After Upgrade From 5.3 To 5.4?

Oct 30, 2009

I have just completed an upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 (64bit) Now when the system starts it gets to Staring udev and then hangs for about 2mins before printing "Timeout" and then continuing.

At various stages during the boot process it just stops with no warning and takes a while to restart.

My boot time in 5.3 was about 50seconds, now with 5.4 it is about 4mins.

CentOS 5 :: 2.6.18-164 To 2.6.18-194 Udev Hang Freeze?

Aug 31, 2010

My issue is: I am "locked" on kernel 2.6.18-164, I just can't get my server up and running with any later release. It simply hangs at "Starting udev".

The hardware is:
MB: Asus M2N32-Deluxe
CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 920 Processor
Boot FS: Ext2
RootFS: xfs
RAM: 4Gb

I have 2.6.18-194.el5 running on other machines.

PS: I'm about to install/update a fresh 5.5 disc for testing purpose anyway. I'll update here if it works.

Red Hat :: 50-udev.rules Causes Start_udev To Hang On Boot?

Aug 14, 2010

I've been having problems with start_udev on my machine post kernel 2.6.18-162 on my CentOS machine. A previous install would work on the old kernelut not the newer ones. I recently did a completely fresh install of CentOS 5.5o see if maybe there was a orruption in my install when it upgraded,t I still have the problem of udev hanging on startup.Using the rescue option on the disk, I've managed to track the problem down to the 50-udev.rules file. Through trial and error, I moved all the .rules files out of the rules.d directory, and added them back one at a time to see which one(s) caused the system to hang, and which ones it carried on booting as normal with. The only one that causes it to hang is the 50-udev.rules.

From what I can tell, this rules file is responsible for letting udev check various pieces of hardware. I think that it is failing whent runs modprobe on a pci device address.Only problem is I don't understand the rules file syntax, so I don't know if I can simply comment out or change a line in this file to skip the device that its looking for.Can anybody help me track down the specific device/line that is doing this?(I've kept the file out of the folder for now and my system appears to continue operating, but I get the occasional problem that for all I know could be due to udev not having a complete start up).

SUSE / Novell :: Udev Addition Hang File Browser 'properties' Menu / Why Is So?

Jan 22, 2010

I am trying to set up a usb weather station (WMR100) on my SUSE 11.1 system. It appears as /dev/hiddev0 (and /dev/hidraw0) when it is plugged in with:
crw-rw---- 1 root root ...
It is the only hiddev device that appears in /dev

I have added this to /etc/udev/rules.d code...

(I will add idVendor/Product values later)

The above successfully sets the access codes for hiddev0 when examined from command line (crw-rw-rw- ...). However, the file browser is fine until I look at the properties for /dev/hiddev0 when it hangs - showing nothing.

Can anyone shed light on this - especially as to if I have done something wrong or this might be a 'bug'

Debian Configuration :: Remote Connection Timeout Error After 10 15 Second Hang

Jan 18, 2011

I have a windows 7 box and a debian 5.0 box connected to a linksys wrt300n router. I can access the linux box from windows 7 through ssh. I used to be able to access the linux box from outside the LAN, but when I was messing with the ssh port configuration (at least I think this was what happened), i lost my ability to connect. I tried writing a new sshd_config file so that it is much simpler:

Protocol 2
PasswordAuthentication no
UsePAM yes

I tried directly connecting the linux box to the internet to rule out a router firewall issue that i was missing. iptables -L yields nothing, as I have since rebooted the machine since messing with iptables rules. But still, when I try to ssh in from outside the LAN, I get a connection timeout error after a 10-15 second hang.

Fedora :: How To Change Udev Attribute

Jun 10, 2011

I have two touch screen monitors tha tI'm configuring for a dual-head display. That is working. For the touch screens it's a bit more complicated, each touch screen requires that I apply a specific config file for each individual TS (touch screen). Each config file is unique to it display. for that I'm using xinput to apply those configuration. My problem here is that the TSs are the same model and show up under udev and xinput under the same the same name minus the different hardware IDs whish is the only way that I can currently distiguish them.So far I've experimented with tweaking the udev rules for a particular TS with no luck (more than likely because I might be doing it wrong).I ned to be able to tell the two appart when I apply the configurations in xinput so I can write a script that will do this automatically for me.

Fedora :: F11 Udev Acts Completely Broken?

/etc/udev/rules.d/20-our.rules has worked perfectly in FC6 and F10. In F11 I can't get udev to even look at it, much less execute the udev commands in it. Stat tells me that none of the relevant files have been accessed when I plug in a USB device that udevadm says was processed and which clearly matched the rules.. I reboot with several USB devices plugged in and according to stat nothing anywhere in /etc/udev was accessed during the boot process.

Fedora :: Udev Rules For Using USB Device Not As Root

Oct 15, 2010

Having finally made the switch from Windows (7 Professional) to Linux (Fedora 13) on my laptop, I'm now trying to get all my devices working, specifically an Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder. I've installed odvr and it works in root, but not as a normal user. The installation instructions say: odvr *requires* access to the user-space USB interface.

It is recommended to place "41-odvr.rules" into "/etc/udev/rules.d" or setup your own udev rules rather than running odvr as root. After changing udev rules, don't forget to run "udevcontrol reload_rules" and to replugin your DVR. Again, root privileges are required unless udev is properly setup. The file "41-odvr.rules" (designed for Ubuntu) has the following content:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="07b4", SYSFS{idProduct}=="020d", ACTION=="add", GROUP="audio", MODE="0664"

I tried just doing what it said and copying it to "/etc/udev/rules.d" but it didn't seem to work. Looking at other files, I then changed it to:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="07b4", ATTR{idProduct}=="020d", ACTION=="add", GROUP="audio", MODE="0664"

And now if I do "ls -l /dev/bus/usb/002", I get:
crw-rw-r--. 1 root audio 189, 134 Oct 15 01:21 007

Which seems to suggest that it is running the "41-odvr.rules" file, since lsusb gives:
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 07b4:020d Olympus Optical Co., Ltd Digital Voice Recorder VN-240PC

But odvr still doesn't work as a normal user, giving:
Failed to open Olympus device: couldn't claim interface

Fedora :: 15 Hang In Parallels On Mac?

May 30, 2011

I've been using F15 through the early releases and now with the final release, and in all of them I've had the same issue:

It will install fine in Parallels, however about 30 seconds to 1 minute after launch, it will hang and completely freeze. This will happen even in run level 3 with no gui running. It doesn't *appear* to happen at the same time every time.

I've tried, disabling networking, sound, and a few other things in the VM to see if that has an effect, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I've also tried making a copy of my F14 VM and upgrading. The same issue persists in this case as well.

I have had no issues with F15 on the metal on different machines, as a matter of fact it's been great and required very little hardware work-arounds. Similarly, F14 has run fine and continues to run fine on Parallels on this machine.

Fedora X86/64bit :: F10 Boot Stops At Starting UDev

Mar 29, 2009

I have done a fresh text-only installation of Fedora 10 on a Dell Dimension E521 for the purpose of setting up a server. After installation I ran yum update to bring the system up to date. After the update, I rebooted the computer, but the boot process froze. I recycled power and pressed "I" after the Dell BIOS screen and the GRUB bootloader appeared. I selected the most current version, edited the kernel line by deleting "rhgb quiet" and replacing it with "3." After making this change, I continued with the boot and the computer stopped at "Starting udev:" I have two fedora 10 revisions showing in the GRUB bootloader, the original installation and the update after running yum.

I repeatedly tried rebooting both versions and, after about 30 attempts, the computer finished booting and got me to the command prompt. Reading through the forums indicated there might be some issue with my nVidia GeForce 6150 onboard video and fedora 10. So, when I got to the command prompt, I followed the instructions in the forums [URL] to load the rpmfusion drivers. This appeared to be successful and when I looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf it appeared to be correct for the new nVidia drivers. After loading these new drivers I tried rebooting. Unfortunately, I have been trying now over and over to get back to the command prompt, but simply can't get past "Starting udev."

Fedora :: System Hang On External HD - 10

Aug 4, 2009

I am running fedora 10 on my laptop. I use a usb Western digital "MyBook" 500Gb (ext3). I am using this hard drive since more than 1 year now. Lately I run into a single problem when I read a precise file. The laptop becomes totally unresponsive and I have to manually shutdown the computer. After start-up I can find that the /var/log/message file of my previous session has grown very quickly with "[sdb] Sense Key : No Sense [current]" and "[sdb] Add. Sense: No additional sense information" messages.

I found various similar question on the web, most of the answer were hardware dependent and kernel related. I tried various kernel hoping that my specific problem would be fixed in the next one but with no success (all the kernel since fedora 10 release and two testing one: 2.6.29.5-84.fc10 and 2.6.29.6-93.fc10), I don't have access to a Fedora 11 machine.

I replaced the usb cable and check that the power supply was working correctly.

I am joining part of /var/log/message and the results of lsusb (related to the external hard drive).

Fedora :: ISO Emulation And Multiboot Hang Ups

On my USB multiboot, Fedora will hang up on certain devices. Things such as touchpad, bluetooth, etc. On my PC it hangs up on first the bluetooth, then I unplug, then the USB hub, then the mouse and finally the external hard drive. It detects the devices but it freezes on detection. I did get this error before the device detection began:

Quote:

dracut; dracut-005-3.fc13
dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=(0,4)'
dracut: Refusing to continue
dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=(0,4)'

this is on the PC and the problem with the USB is that it will hang up when detecting devices.
