Red Hat :: 5 Install All Packages Or Similar To Initial Install?
May 20, 2009I have a user running a retail copy of RH 5 Ent. and isn't sure what package he needs. He is a developer and when installing other instances of RH he just checked off basically all of the packages under development during the initial installer. Now, he's trying to add packages but they require dependencies and he is not able to auto-satisfy those dependencies.
Is there a way that I can get back to that menu during the initial installation and let him check off all the boxes that he wants, or can I have RH auto-install all packages from DVD or install all required packages from DVD?

Jan 3, 2010I just recently constructed a computer to create a nice Fedora Linux server to replace a Mac Mini server that I have been using for a few years. I'm attempting to create a Samba share for my machines, a Windoze 7 machine as well as a couple MacOS 10.6 machines. I've set up Samba, started the service, allowed Samba in the firewall, and used system-config-samba to set up a share with a user. I created a User called "space", and a share /media/peliculas/Movies (a mounted hard drive). When I type in \IP_ADDRESS in the address bar in windows 7, I get the option to log in. I log in correctly and I see two directories "space" and "Movies." Unfortunately when I click on one of them I get the following error message:
Windows cannot access \IP_ADDRESSMovies Check the spelling of the name. Otherwize, there might be a problem with your network. To try and identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. I also get something similar when I attempt to connect with my mac machine. Using "Connect to Server" I type in: smb:\IP_ADDRESS, and login, I have the option to mount "Movies" or "space." If I select any of these, I get the following error message: There was an error connecting to the server "IP_ADDRESS." Check the server name or IP addres, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
Also, if I type 'smbclient -U space -L IP_ADDRESS' I can see the "Movies" in the "Sharename." At this point I'm not sure what else to do, and have been trying to figure this out for the last few days (losing sleep due to being baffled). The only thing that I can think of is that I have something wrong with the smb.conf file. Here is what it currently displays:
Global Settings
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50

One last thing, when I check the log files, there are error messages that state: smbd/service.c:1009(make_connection_snum) '/home/space' does not exist or permission denied when connecting to [peliculas] Error was Permission denied --Windoze 7 and MacOS 10.6 log files

Is there a way to know if the terminal computer (which is connected to my linux server) is using WinSCP to connect (on a Windows platform) or a linux system? It seems they are using the same port (22) and I think the exact same protocol (SSH / SFTP), is there a way to differentiate between the two though? And going farther there, is it possible to limit the connections only to linux terminal computers and reject requests coming from Windows computers?

Jan 23, 2011This is my first attempt at a server, and I running Ubuntu 10.04 server. I had to reconfigure my network, so now I am attempting to use it as a server. I have a Linksys WRT54G2 connecting various machines-- Windows XP, Ubuntu builds, and LinuxMint 10 Julia.
The long and the short of it is that the server connects to the Internet-- I can get updates and install programs via terminal. The server also connects to the router, as tested by pings. The client computers all ping back and forth nicely, and I can access the file share via FTP from the local side and externally (this is part of a larger network).
How can I get it so that my client computers can access the Internet through the router and server?

Aug 16, 2010I'm trying to set up a centralized log-on scheme in a research lab with about 10 computers. It's looking like we're going with LDAP - this decision may be out of my control (but if there's an alternative that would be REALLY better, do let me know). My question is we don't really have a domain name, so when all the tutorials say cn=example,cn=com, I can't mimic this exactly. I've been trying to get away with just one, like cn=researchlab. Will LDAP work with just one, or do I need to invent a second also? On the flipside, will it work with more? Our server can be reached by
lab.department.school.edu, could I do cn=lab,cn=department,cn=school,cn=edu?
Ubuntu Servers :: Setup An Office Network Consisting Of Three Computers?
Sep 16, 2010I am wanting to setup an office network consisting of three computers and one server. We already have the equipment ready with Vista Business pre-installed on the computers. I want to be able to create a network which allows users to use any machine as this will reduce downtime should a machine break. Also I would like user's files to be held centrally on the server which makes backups easier.
The most important element here is data backup. As like most businesses we are moving away from paper and using the computers to store important records such as customer information. If this data were to be lost, the business would come to a complete halt.
I have been looking at the idea of installing a Microsoft Small Business Server as it would be nice to have centralised control of the machines. However the cost would be over 800 which can not be justified for three machines and five users. Therefore I am turning to Linux for a alternative solution. I have previously used CentOS and Ubuntu for home use but never really gained much knowledge or experience of either.
It is my understanding that Samba can act as a Primary Domain Controller, which if I'm not mistaken is where it handles the network logins and profiles. Is this correct? I have come across many samba tutorials online but whats confusing is they are all different. Some of the tutorials involve using Kerberos and OpenLDAP. Do I need to learn about either of these? What do they do and what benefit will they bring?
Finally, I see Samba 4 is in development and is likely to bring a lot of new features which aren't available in Samba 3. Is this worth waiting for because I don't want to be upgrading everything again 6 months down the road?

Eventually it turned out to be some misconfiguration of the server where the VPS is hosted on.Since then I have installed the apache server, but I'm still not able to access the apache server from an external computer. Aug 31, 2011I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
