Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Resolution Seems To Change During Video Playback

Apr 11, 2011

I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:

- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]

As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.

Alltogether I have the following setup:

- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)

Now, here is the problem:

Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".

How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Can't Change Video Resolution To 1024x768?

Aug 22, 2010

I can't change the video resolution for Intel 82740 (i740) video card.I'm new to Ubuntu 10.04, as I've just installed it and I have a problem with video settings.I can't change video resolution for my video adapter. I can only choose between 800x600, 640x480,400x300... not 1024x768 for example. No restricted or proprietary drivers...I used Knoppix 5.1.1 Live CD and it automatically set the resolution to 1024x768.I also used Puppy linux 5.1 Live CD and it had a configuration program which also utilised 1024x768.If these versions of linux can utilise the 1024x768 resolution, why can't Ubuntu 10.04

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Cannot Change The Video Resolution

Aug 17, 2010

I have Centos 5.5 64 bit (with all updates) installed on a new computer that I built, and everything works perfectly out of the box except for the fact that if I try and change the resolution of the display to the max resolution that I can use (aka native resolution of the monitor at 1920 X 1080) using system-config-display, as soon as I log out and log back it in, it reverts to 1280 X 1024. I am very leery of changing the xorg file because this is an expensive monitor and I do not want to trash it, and I have absolutely no experience setting up these video parameters in linux. I did try switching from the vesa driver to the radeon driver using system-config-display, but Centos forced a reconfigure of everything, bringing it back once again to vesa at 1280 X 1024.

I have no desire to to any gaming in Linux, so 2D resolution at 1920 X 1080 using open source drivers would be fine (Whatever the easiest solution would be). I would consider updating drivers, but I my number one concern in doing so would to keep Centos stable. All I ask for is text that is easier to read when I open a terminal, because I work almost exclusively from the command line. My very old computer which is running Fedora 13 and much older hardware has absolutely brilliant graphics in comparison (Obviously newer drivers, kernel, looks like it does not use an xorg file, etc).

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Monitor Resolution

May 1, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years and always at the 1024 768 screen resolution.

I just finished installing version 10.04. It defaulted to 1280 1024.

I much prefer the 1024 768 because it is better for my older eyes, but when I attempt to change, the screen goes black for a minute and then stays at 1280 1024.

Since earlier versions of Ubuntu did it, this should also, but..

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Screen Resolution

Sep 17, 2010

Just Installed the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook on my Toshiba Portege 7200 and the screen resolution is set to 800x600. The OS is not recognizing the fact the laptop can do 1024x768. I've been searching the net for a few hours to fix the problem and I'm not getting anywhere. The fix to the problem is to add the info below to the Xorg.conf file. This file does not seem to exsist on the latest version and if I create it manually it does not work.

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using values from the debconf database.
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg package.
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings. Here are ignored. If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Increase Video Reproduction Quality

May 11, 2011

When I watch movies on Ubuntu I noticed that quality of reproduction is not good as in Windows. All movies seems to have some sort of contrast problem which I don't know how to fix. This problem is not present in Windows (XP/7) and stand-alone DVD players play them also correctly.

Here are images (AVI, DivX format)

Windows version: http://i52.tinypic.com/125hlis.png
Linux version: http://i56.tinypic.com/tz53t.png

Also here is MKV format which is noticeably even sharper in Windows:

Windows version: http://i53.tinypic.com/2lmqxqe.png
Linux version: http://i53.tinypic.com/15gfmlt.png

Note: I didn't wanted to include them in post since they are quite big and I didn't want to do JPG compress since they might lose quality. Try not to resize them.

On Ubuntu I installed some 'extra' codecs (might be proprietary) via Software center. I use standard movie player that comes with 10.10, but for MKV I use VLC since mkv don't run in standard movie player. On Windows I use k-lite codec pack and GOM player. My guess is that Windows solve those sharpness and contrast issues by using some playback filters (possibly contained in k-lite codec pack) that are unavailable in Ubuntu. I installed proprietary video driver for ATI RADEON 2600.

However, now when I play movies on either the T.V as a monitor or just on the laptop itself it comes out with bad video quality now. It sucks because that was the purpose of hooking up my T.V. as the monitor was to watch movies and videos I have downloaded.
