I've some videos with poor quality.It has pixelation and such problems.Can somebody suggest me some filters to be used with avidemux for correcting the pixelation and maybe deblocking it
View 2 Repliesafter a recent foray into Ubuntu. Every day is a school day at the moment, so please be gentle! I recently obtained an old IBM Thinkpad T41 which I've made dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu (windows was my backup option - it's installed but with none of the drivers; thankfully I've not yet hit a problem Ubuntu can't handle!) and which is connected up to the TV in our lounge. I have installed XBMC on it, and we're currently enjoying having access to all sorts of multi-media and iPlayer in the lounge. The thinkpad connects to our home network wirelessly, using the Thinkpad's built in wireless hardware - providing a whopping 11Mbps connection. Our media is all stored on NAS on the network, and I thought that even full 54Mbps wireless would not be fast enough to stream videos smoothly onto another machine.
However we have two windows laptops (one windows 7, one windows xp) which have 54Mbps connections and they can stream the videos smoothly from the NAS, so clearly I was wrong (wer'e not talking High def or blue ray rips here or anything). So my first question. Does anyone have an recommendations of a 54Mbps wireless card (PCMCIA preferably) that is compatible with both Ubuntu and the Thinkpad so that I can improve it's connection speed to the network? I have a "Max Value" branded card in the windows xp laptop (bought cheaply from Amazon) that I tried to but failed miserably to get working in the Thinkpad with Ubuntu last night. All hints and tips welcome....
Second question: Improving video playback on the thinkpad. Some of the videos were a bit choppy, which I thought was just to do with video quality. However having been playing them on the windows xp laptop - Sony Vaio PCG-FR215S, so similar in age and processor speed to the thinkpad - they play absolutely perfectly. So what are my options for improving the video playback on the Thinkpad running Ubuntu? - Upgrade memory to 1GB from 512MB? Will this make much difference? The sony has been upgraded to 1GB, which is why I ask the question. Do I have any options on the dedicated graphics processing hardware front? I'm guessing they are severely restricted as it's a laptop, but thought I'd ask as obviously I'd only be interested in something that is supported by Ubuntu.
Nvidia acceleration is enabled in Ubuntu, and in XBMC. The playback quality in XBMC is comparable with using VLC so I don't think there is anything XBMC specific to be concerned with at the moment.
I've added some modification to cairo dock code to improve the icon visual quality when you use it with opengl. With this code cairo-dock 2.2.0-4 use libpng to load png icon and after build the texture with mipmap. FEATURES ADDED: I've added others modification that allow you to move the height of the icons on the panel and allow the dock to go out of the screen when grow up. You find them in control panel -> behaviour -> position.

I am using ubuntu version Ubuntu 8.04 , it is observed that the video quality is poor as compared to windows os i am not sure it is driver problem or something different, below are detail of my system

I have a 500MB video that is 720x400. I want to half the size of the video while retaining the same relative quality.My main goal is to half the filesize of the video, but to do that and keep the same relative quality I will have to also make the resolution smaller.I can't seem to find a way to do this.I would preferer to use ffmpeg, but any solution would be good at this point. I would really like to be able to do this from the command line, but if there is a gui program that will also give me the command line it uses, that's great too.Does any one know of a way to half the file size of a video while maintaining the same relative quality?
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I watch movies on Ubuntu I noticed that quality of reproduction is not good as in Windows. All movies seems to have some sort of contrast problem which I don't know how to fix. This problem is not present in Windows (XP/7) and stand-alone DVD players play them also correctly.

Note: I didn't wanted to include them in post since they are quite big and I didn't want to do JPG compress since they might lose quality. Try not to resize them.
On Ubuntu I installed some 'extra' codecs (might be proprietary) via Software center. I use standard movie player that comes with 10.10, but for MKV I use VLC since mkv don't run in standard movie player. On Windows I use k-lite codec pack and GOM player. My guess is that Windows solve those sharpness and contrast issues by using some playback filters (possibly contained in k-lite codec pack) that are unavailable in Ubuntu. I installed proprietary video driver for ATI RADEON 2600.
I hooked up my laptop via monitor cable to the L.C.D. T.V. and ran a patch I found on Ubuntu forums because it wasn't showing up on the T.V. After that it asked me what screen resolution I wanted I entered it and then the screen worked! However, now when I play movies on either the T.V as a monitor or just on the laptop itself it comes out with bad video quality now. It sucks because that was the purpose of hooking up my T.V. as the monitor was to watch movies and videos I have downloaded.

When I try to play DVD's with VLC or ANY video player, I get horizontal flickering and I can't seem to fix it. I re-downloaded and installed the most recent video drivers from Nvidia and it did not change anything.

I don't know what else to do. When I run windows, the videos play smoothly, just fine. But when I play the same DVD's under Ubuntu, it's choppy.
I spent about a half hour wrestling with different website tutorials about how to convert a file with ffmpeg and figuring out how to get all the video quality options right. Then I discovered you can just use the -sameq option and it figures it all out for you if you don't want to change the vid quality but just want it in another format. Thought I'd leave this on the site in case anyone else finds himself in the same boat.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway Laptop which is dual-booting Windows XP SP3 32-bit and Ubuntu 10.04, also 32-bit. The 64-bit version, would not install on my computer, even though the computer has 64-bit capabilities. It doesn't bother me that I use the 32-bit version, but something it is now doing seems to be affecting the way things work on my laptop. The computer has 4GB of RAM in it, an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, and an ATI Radeon X-series graphics card. The monitor has HDMI capabilities. On the Windows side, it handles full-screen programs and operates very quickly. On the Linux side, I can also run things quickly. However, most programs on the Linux side are much slower-running than they would be on the Windows side.
Something I notice when my laptop goes into fullscreen on the Linux side, is that the color quality goes way down. You can see that it is trying to run in apparently 256 colors, and each individual pixel is very visible. It does not do this on the Windows side. Also, programs that I run on this half of the computer are very laggy, slow, and inefficient. I know that my computer has the video and processing power to handle these programs with ease, but it isn't utilizing all of it. How can I make Ubuntu run at a higher speed overall, by taking advantage of all four gigs of RAM and this 2.4 GHz Turion processor to run everything like Windows does?
my girlfriend has a netbook(acer A0751h-1401) and always complains how slow it is on vista and how much it freezes up, so i put ubuntu netbook remix on it. The video qaulity is so slow i give up and install xubuntu thinking it will be better since it is for slower computers, wrong. So im thinking it is a video driver issue or something. it has the intel gma 500 in it but it is only allowed to use 8mb of memory for video and i cant change it in the bios. I mean it shouldnt have all the lag on xubntu that it does

outputs the .avi into .mkv, but the output quality is very, very bad, while the original is dvd-quality.
I have a vp6 codec flv. I have a wav file that I want to convert into mp3 and added to the vp6 flv. So when I play the flv the audio is added and the video quality is not changed.I tried:ffmpeg -i 20.flv -i 20.wav -vcodec copy -acodec libmp3lame new_file.flvbut I an error "Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?)". I'm guessing because it is a vp6 flv codec.Is there a way to just add an audio file to the flv? There is no audio in the current flv. I cannot lose any quality in the video.

I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.

I'm trying to get the best performance/quality on my my 10.04 box and i have a few questions regarding 'sync to vblank'. My first question : I see 'sync to vblank' in 3 different locations.
- In compiz display settings
- In NVidia XVideo settings
- In NVidia OpenGLX settings
What is the difference between the 3 ?
Second question : I used to have problems watching movies where the picture seemed to be cut in half ( i'm not a native english speaker so i don't know the technical term). After reading some forums, i enabled sync to vblank everywhere i saw it. That solved the movie problem. But maybe that was overkill ?
So i did some benchmarking and noticed the following :
When i disable 'sync to vblank' in compiz my compiz benchmark drops from 60 to 30. But then my movies look worse.When i disable 'sync to vblank' in NVidia OpenGlx my GlxGears framerate jumps from 300 to 36000.I didn't notice anything when changing vsync in the NVidia XVideo setting. System specs below.

I am runnin Ubuntu 9.10- the Karmic Koala on acer aspire laptop. since everythin in this netbook is crap. so I hardly can see movies that so much going on in them( when so much happens, the screen freezer for a while therefore i miss the most interesting bits) I used kinda every players. the only one that works for me is mplayer since it does not require high spec it works good but it has its own costs. if I use mplayer then i have the porblem of the sound (eg i can hear stuff before it happening) I am now just wondering if there is a way to decrease the quality. I really dont care if i have great quality or not as long as i can c whats happening ( at least for this netbook anyway)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use ffmpeg to split a number of videos of different types (WMV, MPG, AVI). I do not want to change anything else, just split them into smaller chunks. The video is split, but the quality of the output file is terrible. I would describe it as "blocky" (I think the correct term is "pixelated"). When I make the player (KMPlayer) much smaller the problem naturally goes away.
The command I am using:

But is there a way to control the quality of the conversion. I don't really want my FLAC to go down to like 192kbps.
