I installed on Aspire One Maverick and then Wine and then Ulead Video Studio. Now Ulead doesn't work, because it need 1024x768, and Aspire One is limited to 1024x600. I tried to install Xrandr and change the resolution of the external monitor to 1680x1050, but the problem still remain.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?

I can only choose between 800x600, 640x480,400x300... not 1024x768 for example.No restricted or proprietary drivers...I used Knoppix 5.1.1 Live CD and it automatically set the resolution to 1024x768.I also used Puppy linux 5.1 Live CD and it had a configuration program which also utilised 1024x768.If these versions of linux can utilise the 1024x768 resolution, why can't Ubuntu 10.04
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Centos 5.5 64 bit (with all updates) installed on a new computer that I built, and everything works perfectly out of the box except for the fact that if I try and change the resolution of the display to the max resolution that I can use (aka native resolution of the monitor at 1920 X 1080) using system-config-display, as soon as I log out and log back it in, it reverts to 1280 X 1024. I am very leery of changing the xorg file because this is an expensive monitor and I do not want to trash it, and I have absolutely no experience setting up these video parameters in linux. I did try switching from the vesa driver to the radeon driver using system-config-display, but Centos forced a reconfigure of everything, bringing it back once again to vesa at 1280 X 1024.
I have no desire to to any gaming in Linux, so 2D resolution at 1920 X 1080 using open source drivers would be fine (Whatever the easiest solution would be). I would consider updating drivers, but I my number one concern in doing so would to keep Centos stable. All I ask for is text that is easier to read when I open a terminal, because I work almost exclusively from the command line. My very old computer which is running Fedora 13 and much older hardware has absolutely brilliant graphics in comparison (Obviously newer drivers, kernel, looks like it does not use an xorg file, etc).

I installed fedora 14 on Dell laptop but I am unable to change resolution on my laptop also video quality is poor , I think proper drivers are not installed. I am new to Fedora, so probably missing something.

I've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I'm running WoW in Ubuntu 9.10 with wine. My screen's native resolution is 1920x1200. When I play WoW in Windows I set it to 1920x1080 in fullscreen because that aspect ratio allows me to see more of the playing field. In windows it doesn't stretch the screen so I have a black bar at the top and bottom of my screen.
When I set it to 1920x1080 under wine, it stretches my screen. Is there any way I can make it not stretch?
I tried searching forums/google but I couldn't find anything related to my question.
this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to figure out how to change the permissions on Wine, so that the only thing the users on this computer can do is access the programs on Wine that are already installed. Here's what I did already:
- Accessed Home Folder
- Accessed 'Hidden' folder called '.wine'
- Right Clicked on 'dosdevices' and changed permissions to 'Access Only'
- Right Clicked on 'drive_c' and changed permissions to 'Access Only'
Now I need to know how to set these permissions in order to lock them permanently. Keep in mind that I am a newbie and may not understand in depth lingo regarding the terminal.

I noticed under GNOME, it's able to view the resolution of a video file by rightclicking clicking on the file and choosing properties afterwards. View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I have this laptop, and ever since updating to Ubuntu 11.04, the screen will freeze when it turns off to save power, especially if music or video are playing. The screen picture will come up, and the mouse even moves, but I am unable to manipulate anything else on the screen. Sometimes I can hit buttons in the active program, but I cannot see that they are hit. However, when it's a music program or a video, I can hear the sound stop if I hit the pause button. I cannot use the power button to turn it off at this point. I am to do a forced hardware shutdown.
I recently downloaded the a for-pay game, Steel Storm: Burning Retribution, and it also seems to be affected by this bug when it tries to take over the screen. I have managed to close the program by intuition and following sounds, at which point the screen is restored to it's normal settings, but it is frozen and I have to do a forced shutdown. I downloaded several other games to test this out, and many of them then resize the screen have the same problem, though some of them occasionally work and occasionally do not. Of course, the only game that I actually paid for never works.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.

Previously using nVidia graphics card with proprietary driver.
This computer has an ATI(radeon)card.
In /etc/X11, I have a xorg.conf.backup, three numbered xorg.conf.backup files and a xorg.conf.failsafe file. There is no xorg.conf.
I suppose Ubuntu is booting using the failsafe file, which says the driver in use is fbdev.
Can't get the right resolution.
Since Ubuntu took away the xorg reconfigure method, I'm not finding a way to make it recognize that it's running an ATI card and should use an appropriate driver (radeon?).
Is there any way to get back to just one xorg.conf and it's backup, properly configured, and using the right driver, so I can get the correct resolution?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have two video outs on my AGP video card. One is VGA and the other is S-video. I tried connecting the second monitor (Viewsonic) by itself to the VGA port and it works fine and runs at 1280x768 very clearly. I then attached the LG monitor instead to the VGA and attached the Viewsonic to the S-video port. Now it is running at 1024x768 and I have no option to increase the resolution.Is this a limitation based on S-video being worse than component, which is worse than VGA and it simply cannot handle the data density for larger resolutions? Or would it be my video adapter? I swear I had monitor control working fine through the panel, but now when I click on the monitor button it says, "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" and that opens an Nvidia X control panel.
Also, using S-video means the computer doesn't recognize the Viewsonic LCD TV properly, it just recognizes it as a TV. Is this because S-video doesn't play nicely with EDID reporting?It would be nice to get a sharp picture on that TV, the way I had when it was connected like a monitor via VGA. I am not sure what's going on anymore, so any help on clearing up driver issues or getting configuration apps installed or anything like that would be helpful.
Ok, I'm sick of Grub2. It's a total mess that is needlessly complicated in the worst fashion imaginable. (Yes, I've read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2, it doesn't help.) I can't understand Grub2 developers thinking (maybe they're aliens?) and, quite frankly, I just don't care anymore. how to change resolution for textmode terminals (tty1, tty2, ...)? I don't want to read any more [censored] about gfxpayload and how it's supposed to work. Please don't respond if you can't provide an example config that simply just works.
[Edit/SOLVED]: No longer an issue in Lucid Lynx for me. See this HOWTO. Note that 1280x1024 isn't the only option. You can use any resolution supported by VBE of your video card. Use vbeinfo command in Grub shell to see the list of available display modes.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis system is basically working fine, but I'd like to change the video resolution. It has defaulted to the monitor's native resolution, which is 1920 x 1024. I'd like to set 1600 x 900. However, it's not in the list. In fact, the other resolutions listed in System => Preferences => Monitors aren't even the same ratio -they're more like the old 4:3.
Background: desktop pc with AMD64, 4GB RAM, etc.video is Nvidia Geforce 8200 or 8400installed debian 6.0 with the default "base" or "basic" or somesuch, plus "graphical environment". It's Gnome 2-series I believe.And it seems to be using the Nouveau driver as far as I can tell.So I Googled, and on various pages people said to edit the file: etc/X11/xorg.conf
However, there is no such file on my system. So I googled more, and posters give the following advice: kill the X server, kill the gdm, and then give command: Xorg -configure and this is supposed to generate the config file. However, for me it did not generate the file. Instead it failed with the error message: "Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices".
Everytime I install wine, it affects my Google Chrome font - it is changed.How could I solve this?I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 with Chrome 11.
View 3 Replies View Relatedhaven't been around here in a while, seems that the other OS section is completely gone, so I assume this would be the most appropriate place to ask this, since Debian and Ubuntu are similar enough. Okay, so I installed Debian Lenny on my Power Mac G3. 450MHz, 1GB RAM, and an ATI Rage128, the stock video card. It also has a Linksys WMP54G Wireless card which I got working effortlessly enough.
My issue is with the screen resolution. The driver for the graphics card is installed, but I'm only getting a 800x600 resolution. My Monitor is a 1440x900 screen, so everything's quite out of proportion. I assume I may have to go into xorg.conf to tweak things, but I wouldn't know what to tweak. This is the only thing I need to do to make this my full time OS on this machine.
I need to know a command that is able find the hight and width of a video. I know in VLC you can go into the Codec details but I need something in the command line because I have hundreds of files that I need to organize. I could not find any VLC command that does what I want to do.

When the video is full screened on the TV, the actual video uses the resolution of the primary monitor and not the second.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently trying to install 10.10 on my (8-year old) desktop, but I'm getting a warning that says "PC video resolution is out of range. Change setting to Recommended resolution 1924*768@85Hz".
Which would be fine, if I knew how. Is there any way to do this in the installer? I can't get any further than the "Try/Install etc" menu screen.
It has a nvidia Geforce graphics card, if that helps. I can't give you any more info than that because the specs have been lost to the mists of time and old email addresses.
I tried the new flash 10.2 beta in the hopes that they actually improved things, but it doesn't seem like they have.
1) Video's still seem to go to the 0,0 position with multiple monitors. Always the left screen.
2) Clicking on the non-fullscreen monitor still causes the fullscreen to exit.
3) My video is still offset and shifted on players like ....., probably due to screen resolution.
I just installed ubuntu 9.10 32-bit on my parents computer. My dad was having this weird problem where it would only randomly allow him to log in every few tries. Let's say every 1 out of 12 tries.
I believe I have figured what is keeping him from logging in. Only on his user is there an issue with logging in. Only on his desktop have I turned the screen resolution down. From 1152 to 1024.
The usual sequence goes like this -
- I choose his user
- I enter his correct password
- It appears to be logging in, half the log in sound happens and the splash screen runs for 6 or so seconds
- The splash screen flickers between a 1152 and 1024 resolution
- Reverts back to the log in screen, his desktop is never visible.
any ideas on how to fix this? The computer in question is a Compaq Presario circa 2000-2001 if that makes any difference. I have not looked into the video card make yet
I'm running Karmic with an NVIDIA GeForce 6600, normally at 1280x1024. Just during the past week, the resolution has started spontaneously changing to 1024x768, just after I type the password to login. I get the Ubuntu splash screen with the animated light thingy underneath, then the screen flickers and it goes to 1024x768. I have tried changing driver but this has no effect.
I then have to change it manually using the Nvidia X Server settings utility, which is fine. I can then save X settings into /etc/x11/xorg.conf but next startup it does exactly the same again. I have seen a lot of posts in which Ubuntu leaves users stuck in a low res, or even tries to put them into an unsupported res, but nothing quite like this. Is there a Gnome setting somewhere that defines screen res at startup??
